Wednesday with Zips in Portland

March 18, 2009

There is no question that the Gonzaga fans love their team and that the Zags are a state-wide phenomenon. I have been interviewed by five radio stations in the state, including two from Seattle. Also a newspaper reporter from Seattle called for details on the Zips.  Seattle is on the other side of the state from [...]

More with the Zips in Portland

March 17, 2009

I am back after a radio interview with a Seattle station. It's interesting how the state of Washington loves the Zags, perhaps more than the University of Washington, which also plays here in Portland. Maybe it is the underdog thing.
Anyway, kudos for the members of the athletic department for putting this trip together on short notice. [...]

With the Zips in Portland

March 17, 2009

This is Tom Gaffney. I will be blogging a bit here with the team as Mike Rasor attends to law-school duties.
The Zips traveling party includes the team,  members of the athletic department, boosters, media, cheerleaders and band members. The total on the plane is 106.
Buses left the JAR at 6 and arrived at Akron-Canon Airport's McKinley [...]

Zips travel plans

March 16, 2009

The Zips traveling party, with me along for the ride as a paying customer, will leave by charter at 7 a.m. Tuesday from A-C Airport. The plane is scheduled to arrive at 9:15 Pacific time.
Plans are being made to practice somewhere Tuesday, but nothing is firmed up.
On Wednesday, the Zips will have a press conference [...]

The morning after

Football
A wild game like this can propel a team in the right direction (see Browns @ Bengals, 2007), or it can be another meaningless happening on the path to a lackluster season (see Zips @ Western Michigan, 2007).
With 17 days off, Akron has plenty of time to heal, study film and prepare for the stretch [...]

Zips strong, but errors lead to loss

September 27, 2008

Football
The way Akron lost today was disappointing.
Any college football fan would lament a 17-15 loss, but consider what the Zips accomplished today.
They played nose-to-nose with a team that might challenge for one of the nation's top conference crowns. They lost the game because Akron's kicker twitched (or whatever it was) and Cincinnati's did not.
That is [...]

Basketball notes

September 17, 2008

Men's basketball
Coach Keith Dambrot came into my Sports Law class. I know. I know. It's a pretty cool class.
Here are some interesting notes…
He asked the class a good question: What makes Akron a winner? It's not better tradition, facilities, fan support or publicity. Many schools trump the Zips in those areas, yet Akron wins more [...]

Alleman picked up by Dolphins

September 1, 2008

Former Akron offensive lineman Andy Alleman was picked up by the Miami Dolphins yesterday. He was released by the New Orleans Saints just before NFL rosters had to be lowered to 53 players.
The Dolphins also added another guard/center in Nate Garner, who was released by the Jets.
Still, though, this could be a good spot [...]

Zips in the NFL update – Alleman waived

August 31, 2008

Mike is still out of town, so I thought I'd throw this up real quick.
The New Orleans Saints waived former Akron offensive lineman Andy Alleman yesterday. He was a third-round draft pick of the team last year. He lost his spot to rookie Carl Nicks.
The Chiefs waived wide receiver Jabari Arthur. He is expected to [...]

Zips at Badgers live blog

August 30, 2008

Hello folks, Dan Kadar here live blogging for an absent Mike Rasor.
Game over. Wisconsin 38, Akron 17.
Not embarrassing, but there are some things the Zips clearly need to work on. The positives were Chris Jacquemain actually not looking awful, Dennis Kennedy and Andrew Johnson looking pretty good in limited carries and receiver Deryn Bowser. [...]
