Davidson, McNulty earn All-MAC honors

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Baseball

Kurt Davidson and Doug McNulty will return for their senior seasons as All-MAC First Team players.

With these two guys in the middle of the order, Akron's offense should be a powerhouse. Like I wrote earlier, the Zips will need some young pitchers to step up in order for the team to be a conference contender.

Track

The Midwest Regional begins today Friday.

Twenty-three Zips will attempt to finish in the top five in order to advance to the NCAA Championships.

You can follow the action online at this link.

By the way, six Zips earned a spot on the All-MAC academic team.

Softball

Jaclyn Spirtos, the senior catcher, is also an all-conference academic performer.

2008: a big recruiting year

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Men's basketball

As the Zips coaches enter the summer recruiting season, they have a larger task ahead than most years.

They will grant four scholarships. The level of success Akron has in bringing in its top targets — or more importantly, players who fit in Keith Dambrot's system — could determine the team's success from 2009 to 2013.

That's not to mention that the team will need to replace Nick Dials, Jeremiah Wood, Cedrick Middleton and Quade Milum.

"2008 is a big year for us," assistant coach Jeff Boals said this morning. "After we lose that class, we'll be pretty young.

Akron has a database of a couple hundred high school juniors, broken down into three lists (A, B and C).

"Out of that class, we"ll probably bring in two guards and two power forwards or big kids," Boals said. "We just try to identify the guys we really want."

Per NCAA policy, coaches cannot discuss players they are recruiting until the player signs a letter of intent. The two major recruiting sites, however, say Akron already has extended six scholarship offers.

Scout.com mentions small forward Nick Fruendt and power forward Marquise Simmons. Fruendt has offers from nine of the nation's best mid-majors.

Akron is Simmons' only scholarship offer, but he has interest in Kentucky and Central Florida.

Rivals.com adds four more to the list. Point guard Anthony Hitchens has offers from six MAC schools, plus Butler.

The Zips also are going after Hitchens' AAU teammate, Hakim McCullar, who is a 6-foot-7 power forward with offers from Akron, Miami (Ohio), Ball State and Oakland.

Shooting guard Brian Walsh is considering offers from Memphis, West Virginia, Maryland and Pitt, among others.

Drazen Zlovaric is a 6-8 European power forward with high-major offers.

Almost every Akron target was on campus a couple weeks ago for the King James Classic AAU tournament. That kind of national exposure helps the program.

"There were probably 300 Division I coaches here," Boals said. "A lot of coaches said, 'I can't believe how nice your campus is.'"

While the football team has a recruiting advantage over the rest of the MAC because of its outstanding facilities and the promise of a new stadium, the basketball program has a subpar arena, offices and locker rooms. Boals did not want to be negative, but said there is room for improvement.

"They're OK. They're not bad. They're not great," he said. "(Athletic director) Mack Rhoades and coach (Dambrot) have been talking about a new locker room complex, making a team video room, a player's lounge. There have been some talks about restructuring the JAR."

Akron also could add two more guards before the summer is over. Lance Jeter, who transferred from Cincinnati's football program, probably will join the team soon, although nothing is official yet. NCAA transfer rules would require him to sit out next year, and he already lost a year of eligibility.

Darryl Roberts also could join the team. The point guard from the Toledo area was recruited in 2006, but could not qualify academically.

"He's finishing up some academic work," Boals said. "I can't tell you one way or another if he'll be eligible."

If Roberts can play, he would join a battle for the point guard position. As of now, true freshman Ronnie Steward and redshirt freshman Steve McNees will get most of the minutes. However, Boals mentioned how difficult it is for a player to sit out an entire year, without even practicing with the team. One example of that is Jimmy Conyers, who looked lost on offense at times last year.

"Jimmy had a good year, not a great year," Boals said. "It's so hard for a kid to sit out a whole year and not practice or play. Rec Center ball is one thing, but the speed of the game, learning the system. I can't tell you (Roberts) would or wouldn't play. It would be a big learning curve."

Here are some other notes from my conversation with the assistant coach…

Dambrot was upset to see John Rybak transfer. His shooting helped the team in games at the end of last season. In my opinion, it's probably for the best. Rybak was at the back end of a logjam at small forward and didn't appear to have a high ceiling.

The coaching staff did pursue Alex Kellogg, the son of former Buckeye Clark Kellogg. Alex eventually signed with Providence. The three finalists were Providence, Akron and Miami (Ohio). "He was an athletic power forward — didn't have a great skill level but had a great upside," Boals said. "There's not a lot of big kids out there."

Boals expects Conyers, a junior-to-be, to recover the year of eligibility that he lost due to a transcript error, effectively making him a sophomore-to-be. In order to play the fifth year, Conyers must be on track to graduate.

You can't out-Cedrick Cedrick Middleton, but if there's a secondary workout warrior this offseason, it's Nick Dials. The senior guard has done extensive abdominal work and run in marathon relays. "Nick Dials is having an unbelieveable spring," Boals said.

Akron's coaches just love to rave about Middleton, though. "Cedrick … there's not many kids like him in the country," Boals said. "Coach says, 'You need to hang out with Cedrick. You need to work out with Cedrick.'"

The biggest position battle in the fall will be point guard. But maybe it won't be a battle at all… "It will be a committee thing," Boals said. "McNees is looking good. Ronnie Steward had a great year. It's probably going to be freshmen coming in and playing. That's a good thing with coach Dambrot's system. It could be a situation where both Steve and Ronnie are on the court together."

Both guards run a faster paced offense than Dru Joyce. If you had to compare the combo to an NBA backcourt, it would be Phoenix's. Steward is faster and a better shooter, like Leandro Barbosa. McNees is the better ballhandler and passer, like Steve Nash. "Both of those guys can put more pressure on the defense in pushing the ball up the floor than Dru," Boals said. "Are they going to be better than Dru? Probably not."

Season's over

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Softball

Akron capped a tailspin end to its season with a 2-0 home loss to Central Michigan.

The Zips (17-25, 7-11 MAC) had a chance to earn a berth in the five-team MAC Tournament but were swept in the season's last two series.

They tried to do it with first-year head coach Julie Jones, who I have heard is a disciplinarian to say the least. The team loses five seniors, none of whose names I recognize as being major contributors.

Baseball

Akron lost this weekend's series with Ohio, with both teams dealing alternating blowout losses.

The Zips are 20-19 and 6-12 in the MAC after dropping two games to the Bobcats, one of the conference's worst teams.

Track

Many Zips performed well at this weekend's Campbell-Wright Open.

Hopefully, it served as good preparation for next weekend's MAC Championships at Miami (Ohio).

Cruz decommits from Pitt

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

Football

Mike Cruz, a highly recruited tight end and brother of Akron's Jose Cruz, has gone back on his commitment to play at Pitt.

His high school coach says the younger Cruz has concerns of playing in a big city. Also playing a part could be the fact that Florida State offered him a scholarship. Cruz recently visited West Virginia, which is another likely destination.

Here are some new recruits J.D. Brookhart's staff has offered…

    DeMarcus Watts, wide receiver, Atlanta
    Offers: Akron
    Height: 6-foot
    Weight: 190
    Speed: 4.51
Notes: Watts told Rivals.com he is very pleased to have Akron's offer. It will make him work harder in the classroom, he said. Watts also runs track and has received interest from many SEC schools.
Likelihood: This sounds like the kind of kid who will feel loyalty to Akron because the Zips were first to offer. More are certain to come, but Akron could fend off the big boys for Watts.

Tyler Sands, offensive tackle, Boyertown, Pa.
Offers: Akron, Duke, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Temple and Navy
    Height: 6-6
    Weight: 290
Notes: Sands came away from a Duke visit impressed. He still intends to drop by a few more schools, including Akron, before making a choice.
Likelihood: Going up against BCS schools is a challenge, but it sure helps that offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and Brookhart have great ties to Pennsylvania, although Boyertown is not close to the staff's hotbed in the western part of the state.

Tyler Urban, defensive end, North Huntington, Pa.
Offers: Akron, Miami (Ohio) and Toledo
    Height: 6-4
    Weight: 240
    Speed: 4.8
Notes: Urban has three priorities in picking a school: academics (with an engineering program), location (close to home) and size of the program (Big 10 is probably ideal). He told Rivals.com that he hopes to hear from Michigan and he enjoyed his visit to Indiana.
Likelihood: Urban would be a great grab for the Zips. At this point, it appears attainable, given Akron's great engineering school.

    Quincy Quetant, safety, Orlando
    Offers: Akron and Buffalo
    Height: 6-0
    Weight: 201
    Speed: 4.8
Notes: Quetant might also fit in as a punt returner. Without great speed or size, he must be a pretty good hitter to receive Division-1A offers.
Likelihood: To my best recollection, Buffalo never has beaten out Akron on a recruit. On face value, Quetant doesn't look like he'll get any BCS offers.

Baseball

If there's such thing as a good loss, Akron experienced it Sunday.

The Zips battled back from a nine-run deficit, only to lose to Bowling Green 16-15 with a Falcons game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Akron will play Kent State Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the inaugural Diamond Classic for Kids. Proceeds will go to Akron Children's Hospital. If there's one game you attend this year, make it this one. Not only are the Zips playing their rival at a great baseball venue, but it's for a good cause.

Softball

Akron (12-19, 5-5) completed a two-game sweep over Ohio (18-24, 7-7) this weekend.

The Zips really need to finish the season strong and earn a berth in the MAC Tournament. That would be a major accomplishment when you consider the team is young and coach Julie Wright bolted for no good reason after last season.

They will come home next for a matchup with Ohio State on May 2.

Zips hire softball coach

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

Softball

NfpaofzfyjeguyuFor the second season in three, Akron will have a new coach in the dugout.

This time it's Julie Jones, who comes to the Zips after a 10 years career as Cleveland State's head coach.

Jones took the Vikings to last year's Horizon League championship. The team finished the season at 38-15. Her overall record is 206-245-2.

It's cliche — and pretty meaningless in a sport where athletes are usually good students anyhow — but Jones' players have traditionally done well in the classroom.

Here is another interesting facet about Jones' career: Her fundraising topped $25,000 each year.

Jones is a local product, too, playing at Garfield High School and Baldwin-Wallace College.

Jones replaces Julie Wright, who unexplainably bolted to Wisconsin to be an assistant coach. Despite her noggin-scratching exit, Wright's teams overachieved while rebuilding.

With Jones and women's basketball coach Jodi Kest, Akron hired winning head coaches from Division I programs. This makes me believe athletics director Mack Rhoades is offering salaries that are quite competitive.

Baseball

Here is a GoZips.com update on how players are faring in the wood bat summer leagues across the country…

  • Starting pitcher Tom Farmer has a 1.59 ERA in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
  • First baseman Kurt Davidson is an All-Star in the Valley Baseball League in Virginia.
  • Outfielder Charlie Lenhard has a .559 slugging percentage in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League, which is also quite prestigious.
  • I reported that outfielder Rashard Graves would participate in the Midwest Prospect Baseball League in Indiana. He has decided not to play, after all.
  • To find out what's up with these leagues, you can read my Indianapolis Star story on them by clicking here.

Men's soccer

So you're asking: Who will replace star forward Ross MacKenzie.

Don't be disappointed, but his successor did not play one minute last season.

Pablo Moreira missed the entire season with a knee injury, but coach Caleb Porter is asking him to step into a large role, Jennifer Long of GoZips.com reports.

If Moreira wins that spot, his success will be one of the biggest keys to the Zips' return to the nation's elite.

  • The Chicago Fire Premier won the Great Lakes division of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League. Players on the team include Evan Bush, Sinisia Ubiparipovic, Matt Tutich and Jonathan McClain.

A running back from Warren, whom Akron offered a scholarship, verballed with Ohio State on Monday.

Daniel "Boom" Herron is the No. 21 running back in the country, Scout.com says. Neither recruiting site mentions Akron as a serious candidate for Herron.

I hope he enjoys riding the bench behind Antonio Pittman and Chris Wells. Nice career move, Boom. See you in the CFL.

How to be Ben Curtis Instruction Manual

  • Step One: Win the Ohio Amateur golf tournament.
  • Step Two: Sign an endorsement deal to wear ugly NFL polo shirts.

Zips players Ryan Gutowski and Vaughn Snyder will start the process this week. Curtis, who gets paid to be the worst dressed non-Euro on Tour, won the state am in 1999 and 2000. The Stow resident went on to win the 2003 British Open.

I covered the Indiana Amateur for the Star two weeks ago. It was a lot of fun watching how good the players are. If you're in Beachwood, drop by Canterbury Golf Club.

VanDelay's football preview

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Football

Could Akron be bowl eligible but not play in December?

VanDelaySports.com says "yes" in its MAC Football Preview.

According to VanDelay, Akron will lose the MAC Championship, then have to fight with Northern Illinois and Central Michigan for the Birmingham Bowl.

Everything I have heard indicates the opposite. Akron's fan support in the Motor City Bowl basically clinches a bowl berth in 2006 if the Zips are 7-5 or 8-4, Mike Waddell told me when he was still in charge of external relations at Akron.

The 9,000 tickets Akron sold for the Motor City Bowl was the talk of many college football circles, many have told me. And since projected fan revenue is so important for bowl selection and the MAC now has four bowl tie-ins, it would seem Akron has a slightly easier road this year than before.

I don't mean to pick on VanDelay, because the rest of their predictions seem pretty feasible. The site places Luke Getsy and Kiki Gonzalez on its First-Team All-MAC. It also predicts a road victory for the Zips over Cincinnati (Sorry, Nature Boy).

Softball

Late is better than never … I guess.

GoZips.com finally acknowledged that coach Julie Wright bolted to be an assistant at Wisconsin. That is 22 days after Wright resigned.

In the press release, Wright gave the usual garbage "I'm leaving but I love Akron" quote. Here are her exact words:

"It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that I leave Akron for Wisconsin. Akron is an exceptional institution with incredible backing for its student-athletes. From the facilities to the academic support, this Athletics department is truly doing things the right way. There is no doubt in my mind that Zips softball will continue its successful climb in the Mid-American Conference. I want to thank (Athletics Director) Mack Rhodes and (Senior Associate Athletics Director) Mary Lu Gribshaw for this wonderful opportunity and wish all of the coaches and student-athletes continued success and nothing but the very best."

Hopefully Wright enjoys her downward movement in college softball. In the meantime, Rhoades will look for her replacement.

This is what Rhoades had to say about Wright leaving:

"We thank Julie for the outstanding progress the softball program made under her leadership and wish her the best in her new endeavor."

I love Mack, but come on. Endeavor? She's not starting a small business or venturing into a new sport. She is taking a step back in her career, which seemed to be progressing nicely.

That is all for today's ultra-sarcastic Rasor on the Zips.

Five Zips advance in Day One

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Track

Five Zips can set their plans for Sacramento in two weeks after earning a spot in the NCAA Championships. And that total is almost certain to increase with 10 more athletes set to compete on Day Two.

The wind must have been blowing out because both Randall Hafner and Auston Papay advanced in the discus by each breaking the school record.

As expected, John Russell advanced to nationals finishing second at the meet. Natalie Sako and Ashley Kaufman also advanced to nationals with second-place finishes in high jump and javelin, respectively.

Eight others did not qualify, among them Beata Rudzinska, whose college career is over, but not before perhaps becoming one of the best runners in school history. She won 13 MAC Championships and qualified for seven NCAA Championships. Wow.

If you are wondering how this success stacks up to the rest of the region, Akron's women are in third place with 16 points, behind Notre Dame (19) and Alabama (18). The Zips men are in second with 18 points, trailing Louisville (25).

Sure, winning the Triple Crown was nice. I think the team starts to get some real media respect (and not just from me) once it makes some noise in Sacramento.

Softball

In the aftermath of Julie Wright bolting to another school, I became curious to see how big of a softball powerhouse Wisconsin is. To attract a blossoming head coach to be an assistant, the team must have some clout.

It doesn't.

Wisconsin is the Big 10's second-worst team with a 6-11 conference record. The team is 22-22 overall.

OK. Fine. Maybe Wright went to Wisconsin to learn from a really experienced coach.

She didn't.

Head coach Chandelle Schulte is in her first year from the College of Charleston.

Brilliant.

BREAKING NEWS: COACH WRIGHT RESIGNS

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Softball

Zips softball coach Julie Wright has resigned after two years at Akron, athletic director Mack Rhoades told me last night.

In those two years, Wright has a winning record of 53-52. This year the team made its first MAC Tournament in four years with a record of 26-25.

Despite being bumped in straight games from the tournament, the year had to be considered a success with all of the underclassmen who Wright asked to play.

I am really shocked by this development. Wright seemed to really like the job, at least from my encounters with her. A poster on ZipsNation.org says she will take an assistant job at Wisconsin.

Wright is a good person and the players loved her. In that regard, I wish her luck. Rhoades declined to comment on the situation. To me, it sounds like it was strictly a career decision.

Huskies rally, eliminate Zips

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Softball

A surprising season ended in a surprising way for Akron.

Holding a 2-0 lead entering the last inning, the Zips gave up three runs to Northern Illinois, eliminating Akron from its first MAC Tournament in four years.

After throwing six scoreless innings, senior Megan MacKenzie gave up back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh. Freshman Julie Boyes came in relief. She gave up a walk and a sacrifice bunt before a Jamie Stanclift error ended the game in the bottom of the seventh.

The Zips, however, wouldn't have made it that far without the freshman Stanclift, whose two-run sixth-inning single accounted for Akron's only runs.

The Zips finished the season at 26-25, but that really doesn't tell the story.

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year, but freshmen like Stanclift and Boyes preferred it to be a reloading year. While the youth carried much of the team, the core of seniors like MacKenzie and Sara Zilles provided solid leadership to make the inaugural season of Lee Jackson Field one to remember.

Coach Julie Wright also is showing to be one of the unappreciated gems of Mike Thomas' coaching choices. Next year will bring higher expectations. But for now, I applaud how well Akron competed in 2006.

Women's basketball

The athletic department will announce its coaching selection tomorrow at noon.

The Buchtelite's inside sources are saying a number of very qualified candidates are possibilities. You can read about them a few posts below this one.

Track

With four events completed in the women's MAC Championships, two Zips are already conference champions.

Ashley Kaufman (javelin) and Stevi Large (hammer throw) won their events and brought in a majority of the points that put the Zips into first place for the women.

The men are in fifth place out of seven MAC teams with three events complete. Dan Digman (fourth) and Auston Papay (sixth) placed in the javelin event. Randall Hafner took seventh in the hammer throw.

Softball game pushed back again

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Softball

It now appears Akron will wait until 5 p.m. to play Northern Illinois in the Zips second game of the MAC Tournament.

Rain pushed back yesterday's games, which is causing delays.
