Football

This week's questions come from Mike Breese at Red and Black Attack (NIU blog):

1. Both Ball State and NIU took an early 1900's approach to offense in winning their games this weekend primarily through the ground game. This brings the question: Are you satisfied with the balance of your offense currently? Would you like to see more passing or more rushing?

Akron has freshmen playmakers at running back and quarterback. They both need experience. As one improves, it should help the other (because of the effect a good running back has on the passing game, and vice versa). I'm OK with the current allocation.

2. The two best teams in the MAC in Central Michigan & Temple take on non-conf opponents in Boston College and Navy respectively. What positives or negatives come from playing OOC opponents this late in to the season?

The positive for Central Michigan is that it gives them a chance to actually boost themselves into the top-25. The negative is for Temple, who just needs to keep their MAC rampage going.

3. For fun, predict the outcome of the impending doom the 0-7 Eastern Michigan Eagles face as they travel to Arkansas this weekend.

I'm trying my hardest to come up with a reference to old-school rasslin. Still working on it. My readers are more creative than me…

4. If your team/coach were to wear Halloween costume, what would they be?

There's no need to pile on poor J.D. Brookhart. I could say that his coaches could dress as a parole officer, paramedic and NCAA sleuth, but that would be over the top.

5. MAC Power Poll Time

1) CMU
2) Toledo
3) Temple
4) NIU
5) Kent State
6) BG
7) WMU
8 ) Ohio
9) Buffalo
10) Akron
11) Ball State
12) EMU
13) Miami

My, oh, my….how bad must Ball St., EMU and Miami BE? It's shocking to see the once-proud Redskins…err, Redhawks entrenched in the basement. The program deserves better.

joe desjardins October 27, 2009 at 10:00 am

OU beat BG at BG on BG's homecoming. Hard to see how they can be rated below BG in your power poll. Yes, OU collapsed last week against Kent…but key three players (including starting QB and running-back) had the flu. I'm not questioning Kent's ranking — they are pretty good.

Doesn't BSU have a win against a FBS team? How are they lower than UA?

Fred October 27, 2009 at 4:49 pm

A lot of MAC followers aren`t crying too much at the Redskins, err, RedHawks demise. For years it was always Miami. It`s nice to see CMU, Ball State, Buffalo(last year) and even Kent do well for a change. Joe, if it was not for a monumental collapse by Kent a couple of weeks ago Kent would be in the driver`s seat!

As a retired Parole Officer I resent being compared to ANYONE on the Akron staff, its insulting to P.O.'s(lol). Actually I do resent the comparison. What I did was much more important to society than being a football coach! Akron is only 'ahead' of Miami in the power rankings. Get serious.
Temple is NOT the '2nd' best team in the MAC. That is either WMU or NIU.

LEE ADAMS SHOOK ME DOWN ONCE WHEN HE WAS A COP AND THEN HE TOUCHED ME INAPPROPRIATELY AND THEN WHEN THE WHOLE THING WAS OVER MY PANTS WERE DOWN TO MY KNEES…OH BOY YOU ARE RIGHT YOUR MUCH BETTER THAN ANY AKRON FOOTBALL COACH!!!

Doug Snyder October 28, 2009 at 9:18 am

Smart Guy???

Your post is proof that is as far from the truth as when Obama said everything would be "transparent and online for 5 days for citizen review"….or when Clinton said "I did not have sex with that woman"…or when Nixon said “I am not a crook”.

I guess everything is relative…and compared to a moron you may appear slightly smarter.

Lee….thanks for your lifetime service.

Hey Mike, any info on the "violation" of our former RB coach? What's the current status?

joe desjardins October 28, 2009 at 11:28 am

Regarding the investigation, please note that Akron did not "self-report" this alleged violation — the university was notified by the NCAA that it was the subject of an investigation. Therefore, not likely to hear anything until the NCAA makes a ruling. It's pretty clear, however, that the university did find enough in the NCAA's notice that the coach was guilty; there's no other reason for them to have suspended him and for him to have quit.

Those who want to blame it on a new AD who is looking for scapegoats just don't understand the process — the NCAA detected the violation, not the university.

RowdyZ October 28, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Hey realist, BSU played EMU for their D1A victory. SOMEONE had to win.

Steve Coogan October 28, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Nobody wants to blame anybody Joe. We just want the facts. To use phrases like "it's pretty clear.." seems premature. Nothing is clear, that is why I would like to see Mike ask some questions. Also you use the word "guilty," has there been a ruling? What happen to innocent until provin' guilty? Sounds like you have your mind made up what happen already. I just want some facts. Your probably right, I don't understand the process, I hope Mike can help me understand.

joe desjardins October 28, 2009 at 3:18 pm

You can be sure that when the NCAA called, the university did some fast investigation of its own to see if what the NCAA was investigating had any merit. The fact that they immediately suspended the coach speaks volumes. The fact that he subsequently quit says even more. Basically, they peeled back the onion and didn't like what they found. By suspending him — and ultimately "suggesting" he resign — they are trying to limit the penalty from the NCAA.

Steve Coogan October 29, 2009 at 8:30 am

We only know; there is an investigation, he got suspended, then he resigned. Anything else, you are just guessing. I don't care about "speaks volumes" and "suggested." I just want the facts, not your opinions. Help us Mike.

Steve,

I don't know much more than that. I will keep listening.
