Football

Well, this was inevitable, I suppose. Akron has reached the infamous "Bottom 10" list.

Men's basketball

In more positive news, Tom Gaffney wrote about the beginning of the basketball season.

C`mon Zips! Inevitable? News flash……..Akron was on the list last week, too. And I still don`t get that list. Akron is 12-0 aren`t they? ……….ooops, wrong sport.

Zipper Fan October 15, 2009 at 10:10 pm

It could be worse. There's 8 more spots on the list. In fact, there are three MAC teams rated worse than Akron, and so is Florida State.

As a Zips fan, any time our football program is on the same last as Florida State I think of it as good publicity.

Wow, that bunch over at ZipsNat. is about the smuggest, most self-righteous bunch of blatherers you could imagine. They think they absolutely know it all, and anyone who disagrees with them is off-base. Someone should really get ahold of them and shake the stupid off 'em, 'cause what they're spewing smells like vomit.

Thad,

Your name's Thad. Your opinion means nothing.

I really don't know what to make of that Bottom 10 list. It certainly isn't truly who anybody thinks are the 11th-120th ranked teams in the nation. While I don't know where I'd have Akron ranked out of 120 schools I still don't think I'd put them below 110. That being said, they are winless in the MAC and play in its weaker eastern division while playing their third QB so I understand that logic.
but does anybody really think Florida State is worse than 105 or so of the other schools nationally, including many MAC and Sun Belt schools. C'mon. That list is a joke.

Thad,
To what are you referring? There are numerous forums on ZipsNation with numerous opinions; you're sweeping generalization makes no sense.

On the football subject at hand, IMHO, I would rank our coaching staff in the bottom 10…time for a change. I agree with Lee Adams' comment from another blog posting that UA needs to find a successful, young, energetic head coach from a lower division who wants to show the NCAA what he can do at Division I…I seem to remember a Men's Basketball head coach who came to Akron in the mid-1980's like that and did quite well.

Ha! I'm glad someone finally "called out" those regular windbags on ZipsNation. They take themselves and their opinions wa-y-y-y-y too seriously. And make no mistake, they *know* who they are.

That said, the Zips' appearance on this list is an embarrassment. And haven't we been near (or on) the list for the last three years? My friends, either the players or coaches or both stink. Because when you have a conference this weak, and we still can't win it, what other conclusion is there?

Lee Adams October 16, 2009 at 9:47 am

I used to get upset about the stuff said on ZipsNation. It took a while to figure out that a number of its posters were/are on there not just to discuss sports but to fulfill various personal needs. So be it. The football program is still where it is and basically where it has been since it went to DI when 'Jerry's Kids" came in here. That was 1980,what? Anyway, its just a shame that a critical year in the potential upward movement of the football program(new stadium) was wasted by a decision that was not made by the previous AD. The bottom 10 thing is meaningless. Hell, the top 10 thing is usually meaningless. All the barbs and comments on a website have not changed the status of the program. Actual football fans who actually go to all the games and have been for years can only hope the new AD is willing to do what needs to be done. We also hope Nicely doesn't get hurt THIS year.

zinger October 16, 2009 at 2:02 pm

our new AD is in a great spot!
right now the first fire and hire decision for the AD is being made pretty easy by JD and company
Tom W gets to build his new era and tenure with HIS GUY and HIS MARKETING PLAN .

i don't know why but i think the ZIPS get one this weekend

GO ZIPS!

Nate October 16, 2009 at 2:41 pm

@ "his marketing plan."

The next UA marketing plan I see just might be the FIRST marketing plan I see. Agreed?

On occasion, I see a "Fear the Roo" reference, but I do hope the A.D.'s first order of business is to ban the ridiculous "ROO TOWN" slogan. Whoever dreamed up that piece of meaningless crap needs to be flipping burgers.

Realism October 18, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Here's a secret for ya, Nate, both the person who dreamed up "Roo Town" and the person who created "Fear the Roo" are likely flipping burgers!

But then again, we ARE talking about the same school who has brought us the brilliance of the phrase "Kent read, Kent Write…" for the past 40-50 years…and still can't let it go!
