Five things you should know about UNC-Greensboro

December 30, 2008

Men's basketball
Akron will play a game on New Year's Eve.
Hopefully, the players don't have aspirations of having any fun. Keith Dambrot told the media he doesn't drink, smoke or chase women, so it might be a dry ringing in of 2009. The Zips do, however, get a cupcake.
Five things you should know about Akron's opponent [...]

Zips pursue former USC commit

December 29, 2008

Football
Akron is recruiting a four-star defensive end who signed with Southern Cal in 2007.
Chris Henderson (also known as Troy Henderson) is now attending Milford Academy in New York. According to Rivals.com, only Pitt and Akron have offered a scholarship.
Henderson signed with USC as a 264-pound tight end/defensive end coming out of Vancouver College Prep. Akron, [...]

Akron vs. St. Francis – Liveblog

December 28, 2008

Men's basketball
Keep refreshing your browser for updates…
There is no spread on this game, but I'd put mine at Akron minus 15.
It looks like a pretty good crowd if you don't count the AK-Rowdies. Both end sections are almost completely vacant. With two minutes before gametime, I count 25 people in the endzones. Only about 10 [...]

Five things you should know about St. Francis

December 27, 2008

Men's basketball
Some notes on Akron's next opponent…
1) There are two teams called "St. Francis" in the Northeast Conference. Man, I bet that's annoying for NEC fans and reporters. On Sunday at 7, Akron is playing the one from New York, not Pennsylvania.
2) The Terriers (3-7) have a decent RPI of 144. (Akron is No. 93). [...]

Top 10 moments of 2008

December 23, 2008

Miscellaneous
There were no moments that really stood out, so the ranking process was imprecise. Feel free to add your own if I forgot anything.
The Top 10…
1) Men's basketball — Zeke Marshall verbally commits to Akron.
2) Men's basketball — Akron wins in overtime at Florida State in NIT
3) Men's soccer — Akron twice achieves No. 2 [...]

Zips score a juco Diamond

December 21, 2008

Football
Diamond Weaver will make headline writing at the Akron Beacon Journal a little easier.
Scout.com reports that the cornerback with an eccentric name and sub-4.4 speed verbally committed to Akron sometime after visiting campus on Dec. 5. Rivals.com gives Weaver three stars.
It appears to me that J.D. Brookhart is having another great year of recruiting. [...]

Maynor takes over in VCU win

December 18, 2008

Men's basketball
Akron fell last night to VCU 73-69 mainly because of the Rams' star point guard Eric Maynor and his 30 points.
Keith Dambrot said it didn't matter whom he told to guard the future NBA draftee. Maynor blew through the Zips' defense regardless.
Although Akron lost by only four, the game wasn't that close. The Rams [...]

Zips will try to slow tempo

December 17, 2008

Men's basketball
Keith Dambrot said his team will try to make tonight's game at VCU a low-scoring contest.
That is the Miami theory of playing teams with superior athleticism/talent. Don't let them find a rhythm and keep the scores low — which means the gap will be smaller. Such a plan gives you a chance in the [...]

Zips swipe Toledo commit

December 17, 2008

Football
A source tells me that Akron might have pulled a coup on Toledo when a four-star safety decommitted and chose the Zips.
The player is Jermaine Robinson, the No. 14 prep school athlete in the nation. Coming out of a Pittsburgh high school last year, he verbally committed to West Virginia, then signed a letter of [...]

Hitchens leads Zips to win

December 14, 2008

Men's basketball
I have never heard of a player setting a career high in points five games in a row, but Humpty Hitchens did it.
It is proof that a great scorer is blooming. The freshman dropped 23 points on North Carolina A&T last night during Akron's 78-61 win.
Tom Gaffney's story this morning described Hitchens' performance with [...]
