I like NOT LIKING Ohio State. I refer to them as the Suckeyes, even though they are a good team. They are not my team. I also like NOT LIKING Kent, Ohio U, Toledo, Bowling Green, Miami OH, other MAC teams, and YSU (even though they're a minor league team). I like liking the Akron Zips. They're my school, my team, and this is their blog for a growing fanbase thanks to folks like Rasor and the folks on Zipsnation.org. So on behalf of us all, all the haters can take their anger (or whatever emotion it is) elsewhere.

GO ZIPS!

oh YSU. My apologies. That is soooo much better. 125K a year. nice state. I love it when people randomly pull numbers out of thin air. I'll give it a try. 90% of all Kent fans are pot heads. 18% of all YSU students have an IQ over 80. 34% of the 18% leave YSU for another school that isn't teaching the ABC's. 66% of the 18% are shot by some moron Youngstown native who thinks he/she is a badass.

Perhaps you should do your research. Jimmy Olson was a photographer. Are you saying I should go photograph something or were you making a lame attempt at calling me a reporter and that is why i should research what i say?

Boozer - 125K per year in ticket sales are you serious? Last year's attendance was just under 16,000 per game. Even if you assume only 13K paid attendance and an average ticket price of $5 (I paid $15 each for my tickets). For the 5 home games (one was at Cleveland stadium but it still counts), this comes out to $325K. Also the naming rights to the stadium along with donations have already paid over 1/3 the cost of the stadium. You do make a valid point that UA did have to take on debt to pay for the stadium up front though.

The Rubber Bowl is falling apart so for Akron to continue on in football it was going to take a similar amount of money to fix the Rubber Bowl or go with the on campus stadium. I believe the on campus stadium will lead to attendance averages over 20K per game and that coupled with much higher ticket prices should bring in over $1 million per year in ticket sales:
$10 average per ticket * 17K (paid) * 6 games per year instead of the 5 they have been playing at the Rubber Bowl.

Least you think the 5K bump in attendance won't happen due to the new on campus stadium - every alumni, student, and local person I talk to says they don't go to games because of the Rubber Bowl. Especially students will come out in much higher numbers with an on campus stadium.

As for saying Akron should drop football, most division 1 colleges lose money on football. If only the money makers in football continue on, then only 20 or so teams would exist.
Not all of us are OSU fans and its nice to have other college football options in Ohio. I just wish one or more of them would get good enough to challenge the OSU strangle hold on the state. It looks like Cincinnati is the second best college football team in the state at the moment.

Oh, and how much tax money do you think is subsidizing Akron Athletics? The answer is about 12m a year of the 17m budget, which swims in the red

Maybe instead of casting stones you should look into how many tickets Akron has actually sold. The little number may actually surprise you. My company actually bought some Akron tickets last year but we are not doing the bulk deal this year. No one used them and it was a waste of cash.

Outside of ticket sales, which could not be more than 125K a year, the suite income will be Akron's biggest push to pay down the debt on the stadium. Please God tell me that you are more informed than to think that Akron is paying for their stadium up front. Without extreme financing, and dragging the Akron U bond rating into the mud, this stadium would not be being built.

Finally, Jimmy Olson, why do you think I am a Kent fan. I actually am a YSU fan, but that is neither here nor there. Instead of calling people names maybe you and the owner of this blog could do some research into the finances.

1: Ohio tax payers didn't fund the stadium.
2: Seeing as how no one around here understands what a blog is, or in general what sarcasm is, I'll take your 500 year figure as a literal figure in which you expect the stadium to be paid off. You are saying that Akron will only pull in 134K a year. That is 26,800 dollars a home game (based on 5 home games a year). So you are saying that if attendance is only 15K per game (I know Kent fans, this is a lot of math. Take another hit off of your J and relax. The math will be over soon.) Akron will only charge $1.79 a ticket. While that may be what a Cheesy Gordita Crunch costs at KSU's biggest employer, football tickets tend to be a bit more expensive.
