Torrence, receivers shine in full pads

Football
The receivers and DeVoe Torrence impressed coach J.D. Brookhart during Friday's practice, according to GoZips.com.
It was the team's first practice in full pads. Torrence finished off the scrimmage with a long touchdown run. Dashan Miller and Andre Jones also made big plays.
I plan to drop by camp on Tuesday with Dan Kadar for another video update.
- Notes…
You have probably read about the vandalism at Kent State's Dix Stadium. Both sides are hoping KSU fans won't retaliate. Actually, I hear the Flashes contingent has been rather busy in other ventures lately.
- A new scholarship offer…
Vincent Williams, defensive back, Alpharetta, Ga.
Offers: Akron and Ball State
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 165
Speed: 4.46
Notes: Williams' highlight video shows a heat-seeking missile who swarms to the ball. Scout.com also lists Williams as a receiver. Rivals.com does not have a profile for him.

So Torrence is definitely playing RB, then? It just seems too crowded there, but if he really is the best of the all, so be it. Maybe Kennedy can switch to defense or something.
Good to hear about the Receivers looking good, though. Hopefully they have those routes down so the QBs don't throw any more unnecessary interceptions because someone was in the wrong spot.

“Our defense stopped run despite having three of our top four on the sidelines with injury. Despite that, I really like the way our running backs continue to play and today’s scrimmage ended with a nice, hard touchdown run by DeVoe Torrence. I mentioned our depth at receiver yesterday and today was no different. Dashan Miller has looked good, Andre Jones had a 60-yard touchdown and Alphonso Owen has had a really good camp so far.”
Who is hurt on the defense?

How pathetic is Akron to change game times based on the Buckeyes and then admit to it on their own web site. Maybe next year they can show the OSU games on the big screen video in the new stadium when their sad team is losing on the field.
Seriously, someone should do a financial analysis of this new stadium from the State of Ohio and tell us who pay taxes why this is a good investment.
Akron football loses money and has never, ever turned a profit. They cannot even sell 5,000 season tickets, which would be 25% of the new place's capacity. At 60+ million dollars it will take them about 600 years to pay for the place.
No wonder Ohio is going to hell financially with great decisions like building a lemon like this.
Akron should have dropped football and focused on basketball.
Bucks Rule this State.

Coming from a fellow Buckeye, you are a disgrace and an idiot.

How in the world does that marijuana bust article have anything to do with Kent State? It happened in Stow, and there is nothing said about any affiliation with Kent State. They could have just as easily been Akron students/grads/staff. You of all people should know that being a Stow native. And how does this in any way relate to the vandalism at Dix Stadium? (Where the geniuses decided to autograph their crime with the name of the group they represent.) Rasor, you've sunk pretty low in the past with your feeble attempts to make Kent look bad , but this tops them all.
August 10th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Oh boy, it looks like we have a three-team fan fight. Let the games begin.
p.s. Flash Fan, I was not one bit serious about that post. It's a blog. Take my feeble attempts at humor as part of the blog experience.
August 10th, 2008 at 11:27 am
What does the marijuana article have to do with Kent State? Being a Stow native, you of all people should know that they could just as easily be affiliated with Akron U., especially since a gun was involved…..
August 11th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Boozer, don't take the time to respond on Rasor's blog.
Please take the time to read and study.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:37 am
So the fact that this is a "blog" gives one license to say or imply anything they want, even if they know it not to be true? Seriously? Hmmmm…have fun defending that one in law school.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Let me spell it out for you, Flash Fan.
1) Kent State has a reputation for being a hippie school.
2) Hippies love smoking marijuana, which is also commonly known as the cheeba or sticky-icky.
3) I didn't feel like having a serious discussion about vandalism, so I took a shot at KSU's reputation.
4) This being a blog, the material does not always have to be straight-laced.
Any questions?

Mr. Rasor: Perhaps you should take a look at the average ACT scores for incoming freshmen at the two schools. No, why not compare incoming test scores at Akron versus the entire MAC. How well does Akron fare? (Not well at all.)
August 11th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Ahhh…the pot-shots (pun intended) fly both ways. Yes, Joey (there's irony in your name), Akron will fall near the bottom of those rankings as long as it is an open-enrollment school. Each school has it's strengths in different areas of education. That's a long, drawn-out and over-killed argument. Does open enrollment really mean anything about the quality of education? No. It means UA allows everyone to attempt to better themselves, regardless of their previous academic issues. Most will still have to be "up to speed" via prerequisite courses. Turning away potential students is just bad business anyways, especially in the economic climate of Northeast Ohio. Anyways, does it make a professor less effective to have an inadequate student in class? No. Because they're probably not in attendance, or they're in the back of the room not contributing to conversation.
Now, in the words of Mr. Rasor… go smoke some cheeba, hippies.
(please don't cry)

How do you get a KSU grad off your porch?
August 11th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Duh. Pay for the pizza.
August 11th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
You guys see that on the OSU/Michigan documentary? I know you go to Akron and all, but can't you come up with your own material?
At least the Kent grad is qualified for a job…..
August 11th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Akron is sad. 67 million for a stadium that will take more than 500 years to pay for.
How many season tickets are sold for this year? Answer is less than 1,500. And Ohio tax payers needed to fund this stadium for what reason?
August 11th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
1: Ohio tax payers didn't fund the stadium.
2: Seeing as how no one around here understands what a blog is, or in general what sarcasm is, I'll take your 500 year figure as a literal figure in which you expect the stadium to be paid off. You are saying that Akron will only pull in 134K a year. That is 26,800 dollars a home game (based on 5 home games a year). So you are saying that if attendance is only 15K per game (I know Kent fans, this is a lot of math. Take another hit off of your J and relax. The math will be over soon.) Akron will only charge $1.79 a ticket. While that may be what a Cheesy Gordita Crunch costs at KSU's biggest employer, football tickets tend to be a bit more expensive.

Kiel, I told Boozer to research instead of respond.
Skip hacky sack practice and research Booz.
August 12th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Maybe instead of casting stones you should look into how many tickets Akron has actually sold. The little number may actually surprise you. My company actually bought some Akron tickets last year but we are not doing the bulk deal this year. No one used them and it was a waste of cash.
Outside of ticket sales, which could not be more than 125K a year, the suite income will be Akron's biggest push to pay down the debt on the stadium. Please God tell me that you are more informed than to think that Akron is paying for their stadium up front. Without extreme financing, and dragging the Akron U bond rating into the mud, this stadium would not be being built.
Finally, Jimmy Olson, why do you think I am a Kent fan. I actually am a YSU fan, but that is neither here nor there. Instead of calling people names maybe you and the owner of this blog could do some research into the finances.
August 12th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Oh, and how much tax money do you think is subsidizing Akron Athletics? The answer is about 12m a year of the 17m budget, which swims in the red
August 12th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Boozer - 125K per year in ticket sales are you serious? Last year's attendance was just under 16,000 per game. Even if you assume only 13K paid attendance and an average ticket price of $5 (I paid $15 each for my tickets). For the 5 home games (one was at Cleveland stadium but it still counts), this comes out to $325K. Also the naming rights to the stadium along with donations have already paid over 1/3 the cost of the stadium. You do make a valid point that UA did have to take on debt to pay for the stadium up front though.
The Rubber Bowl is falling apart so for Akron to continue on in football it was going to take a similar amount of money to fix the Rubber Bowl or go with the on campus stadium. I believe the on campus stadium will lead to attendance averages over 20K per game and that coupled with much higher ticket prices should bring in over $1 million per year in ticket sales:
$10 average per ticket * 17K (paid) * 6 games per year instead of the 5 they have been playing at the Rubber Bowl.
Least you think the 5K bump in attendance won't happen due to the new on campus stadium - every alumni, student, and local person I talk to says they don't go to games because of the Rubber Bowl. Especially students will come out in much higher numbers with an on campus stadium.
As for saying Akron should drop football, most division 1 colleges lose money on football. If only the money makers in football continue on, then only 20 or so teams would exist.
Not all of us are OSU fans and its nice to have other college football options in Ohio. I just wish one or more of them would get good enough to challenge the OSU strangle hold on the state. It looks like Cincinnati is the second best college football team in the state at the moment.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
oh YSU. My apologies. That is soooo much better. 125K a year. nice state. I love it when people randomly pull numbers out of thin air. I'll give it a try. 90% of all Kent fans are pot heads. 18% of all YSU students have an IQ over 80. 34% of the 18% leave YSU for another school that isn't teaching the ABC's. 66% of the 18% are shot by some moron Youngstown native who thinks he/she is a badass.
Perhaps you should do your research. Jimmy Olson was a photographer. Are you saying I should go photograph something or were you making a lame attempt at calling me a reporter and that is why i should research what i say?
August 13th, 2008 at 7:25 am
YSU…now I get it. Enough said.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Hey Looser Boozer, SCREW OHIO STATE. Go Zips
August 15th, 2008 at 9:30 am
I like NOT LIKING Ohio State. I refer to them as the Suckeyes, even though they are a good team. They are not my team. I also like NOT LIKING Kent, Ohio U, Toledo, Bowling Green, Miami OH, other MAC teams, and YSU (even though they're a minor league team). I like liking the Akron Zips. They're my school, my team, and this is their blog for a growing fanbase thanks to folks like Rasor and the folks on Zipsnation.org. So on behalf of us all, all the haters can take their anger (or whatever emotion it is) elsewhere.
GO ZIPS!
August 18th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
"Anger" would be a good guess. It's CERTAINLY not jealousy…
