Video report from Zips camp

Posted August 7th, 2008 by mrasor

Football

I posted the video from camp below.

Here are some other notes that didn't make the video…

J.D. Brookhart told me he wants to use six to eight receivers in his rotation. Crazy!

Devoe Torrence got about five touches during the scrimmage drills. You can tell he has the skills to break a long run, but the defense was in proper position. Torrence probably won't lose yardage on many plays. He will wear No. 4.

Gary Pride got a lot of touches. Watch out for this guy. Brookhart just needs to find a way to use him.

Chris Jacquemain threw two interceptions — both to Brandon Anderson. One of the interceptions is on the last part of the video.

The quarterbacks didn't play well according to my untrained eye. Brookhart said some bad routes that led to mistakes, too. In fairness, Jacquemain looked crisp in spurts. Matt Rodgers was so-so.

Larry Dawson of Akron North High School is on the updated roster. I meant to ask about him, but I forgot. Last I heard, he was choosing between Akron and Bowling Green, but he did not commit on Signing Day.

Dale Martin came to Akron because one of the Zips coaches had a good relationship with Martin's high school coach. Also, Martin heard that his former high school teammate, Ryan Bain, was having a good experience as a transfer.

Dennis Kennedy ran hard today. He plowed through the defense once in a way that made Dan Kadar and I think back to the glory days of 2006, when Kennedy was All-MAC caliber.

Speaking of Kadar, special thanks go out to him for filming the clip and coming up with the idea. We plan to do that a few more times before the season begins.

Nice job Mike, great idea with the video. Thank goodness for our defense! May they all play like Mackey!

Classic Rasor interviewing skills. Its talent like that, which allowed you to talk to true modern day legends like Denny Blaze and Marc Norton. Please tell me you wore that suit just for this video.

Also, no Danny K comments? No strange facts about college football that no one else would know? Disappointing.

    Thanks, 5103.

    Kiel,

Lest we not forget that I got DBlaze to show at a beer pong event. But no, Danny K preferred to be behind the scenes. He was the Vince Russo to my Eric Bischoff.

  4. Rob Says:

    SWEEEEET! Keep the videos coming!

One question. JD said some of the interceptions were from poor route running, but he wants to use 8 WR's?! That seems like quite a conundrum there. He should pick 5 and get them A LOT of reps w/ our QBs!

Talent wise, aside from QB, we're a Big Ten caliber program. But, man, I'd rather watch Malone College's backup QB out there than sit through another season of the QB play we witnessed last year.

  5. Kiel Says:

Oh, I'm praising the DBlaze stuff. I think i still have that photo of you two with the Red's helmet on my other phone.

DK as Vince Russo? So you're saying we should expect some lame angle for the next film?

  6. DSmith Says:

Great job! I love it. Keep 'em coming.

  7. Dskizzy Says:

Great job! keep these videos coming!!

  8. DSmith Says:

The spread offense involves 3, 4, and even 5-receiver sets. I'm guessing that is why JD is try to get so many receiver's involved in a rotation Mike.

  9. mrasor Says:

    I see your point, DSmith.

But with Akron's talent distribution, I'd like to see them go the other way — maybe even a wishbone to get the RBs more opportunities.

  10. G-Mann Says:

Rasor, keep it up, this is the kind of stuff we need to get people excited about the program.

  11. Zach Says:

    Mike,

Nice job interviewing. It's great to see Akron actually getting video coverage of anything.

A question you should ask JD or the offensive coaches: Wouldn't it be wise to create an offense based around our current talent distribution, rather than one that obviously doesn't work with the players we have? Maybe a Flexbone (wishbone-spread hybrid) offense like Navy.

I'm sure you can find a more tactful way to ask that.

Also, see what you can find out if any RBs will be willing to switch positions, since we have so much depth there, and we are thin at the WR and DB spots.

  12. CK Says:

My Question: "CJ11 threw a bunch of INT's in the spring game, and they seem to be coming in bunches now. Is that a trend, or a pattern?"

  13. Brian Says:

Ok. You have to understand that during a practice the QBs run roughly 70+ plays, along with 50 or so passes to WRs, TEs, and RBs. We are looking at somewhere around 100 passes for Jacq and Matt Rogers. Throwing a few pics during this is not too bad right now. It is still the beginning of camp and the first these guys have seen the everyone on a field at the same time. You also have to be at practice to see the kind of INTs that happened. A few of these hit the receivers hands making it not so much the QBs falut. There is a lot to take into consideration. Is five or so INTs bad, yes. But under these circumstances it is ok. If it is happening a few weeks from now then you have some concern.
