Zips announce four-star transfer

Posted August 6th, 2008 by mrasor

Football

The team announced the arrival of blue-chip transfer Dale Martin from Louisville.

The running back was a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com and Scout.com when he came out of Bolingbrook, Ill. — the same high school as Ryan Bain.

Louisville fans are calling this a big loss. They speculated that Martin may have been frustrated by some injuries, and he did not like his outlook to get playing time early. Also, Martin committed to Louisville shortly before coach Bobby Petrino left for the Atlanta Falcons. After Petrino left, Martin had to be talked into keeping his commitment.

Martin's highlight videos show me a speedy runner with a tremendous sense of balance. To take down Dale Martin, you must pop him AND wrap him up.

Martin had scholarship offers from Nebraska, California, Florida, Tennessee and many others. He will sit out 2008 and be eligible next season. GoZips.com lists him as a redshirt freshman.

The unusual part about the transfer is that the university announced it. Typically, you have to milk these things from coaches.

    Notes…

The ABJ's Patrick McManamon gave his opinion on the Devoe Torrence saga. It seems like he's in favor of giving him a second chance. In the story, Mack Rhoades said Torrence would not be a Zip if there were other sketchy pieces of his past.

The university is appealing the $3 million price tag on Joe Nemer's land. A move by the board of trustees suggests that UA might back off buying it at that cost.

Check by the blog tomorrow. I will be at football camp in the morning with Dan Kadar. We will shoot a nifty video and get some cool interviews for you.

Men's basketball

The feds charged former Toledo player Sammy Villegas with fixing games.

He allegedly biffed two free throws against Wright State in 2006. In three games against the Zips, Villegas averaged about 20 minutes per game and shot 4-for-6 on free throws.

I did some extensive checking and UofA can back out of the eminent domain. They would have to pay all legal fees and damages which current estimates say about 100,000 plus in legal fees alone for Joe Nemer and about 50,000 plus in legal fees for Manny and damages. They'd still be out close to half million just to walk away from this. I'm betting that the case as Mendenhall feels they have an rock solid case and I seriously doubt Manny or Joe would settle for less then the judgment awarded Joe Nemer. I hope I'm wrong and was hoping to see a settlement fourcoming around 1.75 mil. But, Joe Nemer appears to greedy for that.

Good point about the attorneys fees, Big Guy.

However, my question for you is this… Where is the line between greed and smart business sense? I doubt any of us would leave even $100K on the table if we didn't have to.

    Thanks!!!
I can't wait for a nifty video and cool interviews. I'll be checking back. I would like to hear Rodgers, Bain, Bowser, Jones and Sewell interviewed.

Rasor, they mentioned in the article of potentially pulling out from paying the 3.1 million for Joe's properties. So I'm assuming that is pending the appeal and the potential of the value not being reversed. However it never really says they won't still pursue Manny's properties. So maybe I'm reading the article wrong but it looks to me like it would play out like this, if the appeal ends up with the same results, walk away from Joe's, then go after Manny's.

They are in fact still going after Manny. No trial date has been set. They'll walk away from Joe Nemer property if they the suit is not reversed or if Joe doesn't settle for less. Rasor, I'm of the opinion that land and business loss is no where close to $85 per square foot. If, UofA is willing to pay 1.75 mil and Joe says no. Then that is greed. On the open market he would never gotten 1 million for his property and he not get the tennants needed now to maintain said property.

  6. Rick Says:

UA TO WALK AWAY FROM BUYING THE NEMERS' PROPERTY? YEAH, THAT'LL HAPPEN. NOT. UA WANTS THOSE DORMS UP AND THE BLIGHT GONE. AND THE WAY UA SPENDS LIKE A DRUNKEN SAILOR, THIS PRICETAG WILL NOT STOP THE PROJECT. IT'S BECOME PERSONAL NOW. I LOVE IT.

Looks like we continue to get great talent on the field….only thing left is to get great coaching which in my opinion hasn't happened….

  8. Big Guy in GA Says:

At 3.1 mil for a property that only worth less then 1/3 of that. Don't bet on UofA paying that amount.
