LeBron, Chris Paul rock Rec Center's rims

Posted July 8th, 2008 by mrasor

Men's basketball

CBSSportsLine.com wrote an interesting story about LeBron James and Chris Paul's Monday evening, which included seven pick-up games at UA's Rec Center.

The nation's best and brightest basketball people have converged in Akron for the LeBron James Skills Academy. Some of the ZipsNation members have poked their heads in and gotten a look at future Zip Zeke Marshall. Read some of their comments if you have a chance.

Football

Do you want your name on InfoCision Stadium?

The university wants to sell naming rights to just about every facet and part of the new football facility, the ABJ reports.

    Stadium notes…

The university has, however, sold all 13 luxury suites. It has raised $21.5 million, which is great progress toward the $30 million goal. (I'm wondering this to myself: Assume the Zips tank this season. What if a big donor gives a gift contingent on firing a coach? It happens at bigger universities.)

Here's a nugget hidden in the story: There will be a cash bar inside the stadium, but it seems to suggest it will only be available for the loge patrons. The U might plan more places to whet your whistle.

The webcams show some serious progress (and a whole lot of mud).

Pretty soon, the second Nemer trial will begin. Probate Court Judge Bill Spicer set himself up for inequity here. Certainly, you cannot pay one Nemer the astronomical value and pay the other Nemer a fair value. Or can you?

I sent an email to Carol Biliczky ABJ writer on that article. Why is the UofA site saying 17 suites and she is saying 13? Did they do away with 4 suites and not tell the website people? That site also says 16 suites are sold.

  2. G-Mann Says:

Big Guy, there are 17 Suites. The 13 that were sold, plus 1 each for Summa and Gary Taylor, and 1 each for the University President (Proenza) and then the Athletic Director (Rhoades).

  3. Big Guy in GA Says:

Thanks G Mann. I re-read the article and saw where she pointed out 4 suites were accounted for.I love how consulants Convention, Sports & Leisure International, told them they'd sell five. Just shows even you're so called best consulants are not experts on everything.

  4. Akronite Says:

I wonder if they can get a webcam from the East side / Nemers' property where the construction guys park their trucks and run their hose through the entire parking lot. Oh the audacity.

  5. Big Guy in GA Says:

Give us a break Akronite. They couldn't use the Nemer property without permission from the owners. The audacity is you keep posting this crap with no facts. The fact of the matter is the parking lot is empty and has been empty for months.

  6. Akronite Says:

ha ha! Trust me big shot– I have my facts straight and I am 120% certain they did not receive permission from the owners because I saw it with my own 2 eyes and asked the construction worker. Something you cant speak on behalf of because you wouldn't know being in Georgia.

The parking lot has never been empty and I also know this because I am there 6 days a week.

So next time get your opinions straight.

  7. Big Guy in GA Says:

Akronite I'm not going to argue with you and I'm fully aware of what's going in that area. If, they parked anything on the Nemer property. All the Nemer's would have to do is call APD and get it towed. Joe Nemer has already stated his businesses is way off since the construction started. That's from the owner own mouth. I'll glady give you the Hoban High site and my nephew name who you'll see coaches at Hoban and drives by these businesses everyday on his way home. I talk football with him at least twice week and he still tells me those businesses are all but, dead. I have my facts straight. I seriously doubt yours.

    Mike,

I have a roster question for you. I heard that JUCO DB Kevin Funches may not be joining the team in the fall. He signed a letter last Feb. This would explain the courting of Chaz Russell. Can you confirm this?

    Thanks

  9. mrasor Says:

    Rootown,

I don't know about Funches. Last I heard was spring, when J.D. told me he expected Funches to be a contributor.

I will find out for you once camp starts.

Joe's looks pretty dead on the outside (never been in there though), but Manny's and Aroma's still gets business. Lots of cops go in for late night coffee and there always seems to be a small handful of cars parked outside Manny's (again never been in there myself)

  11. Big Guy in GA Says:

Anonymouse that'd about what my nephew tells me after I have another run in with Akronite. I make a point of asking him again and he tells me the very same thing. A handful of cars or the parking lot is mostly empty. Joe's Bar is dead and Manny is only shell of it former self. I stood in the Million dollar parking lot over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. Both bars were closed most of the weekend and when they were open. I noticed only couple of cars. They also both look far worse now then ever. The former Zip strip is not dying a slow death. It's long been dead.

Funches is not on the updated roster while the other new comers are showing up. doesn't look good. lets hope russell comes to akron

  13. mrasor Says:

    Good find, 19.

Landing Russell just became a lot more important.
