MAC standings and breakdown

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Men’s basketball

Heading into the end of the regular season, here’s the breakdown…

    1) Kent State (11-2) — Notes: The Flashes hold a tiebreaker over WMU. Barring two losses out of the last three, they will be the 1 seed. Games left: @ BG, vs. MIA, @ AKR

    2) Western Michigan (10-3) — Notes: After a slow start, WMU has blown away the West. Games left: @ TOL, @ CMU, vs. BSU

    3) Akron (9-4) — Notes: The Zips likely will lose one of the final three, putting them in the 3 seed. Games left: vs. BUF, @ OU, vs. KSU

    4) Ohio (8-5) — Notes: Ohio can leapfrog Akron, but it will probably require winning out. The Bobcats are playing well enough to do that. Games left: @ MIA, vs. AKR, vs. BUF

    5) Miami (7-6) — Notes: The RedHawks’ season has been up and down. You better believe they want the 4 seed from Ohio, and the first-round bye that comes with it. a vs. OU, @ KSU, vs. BG,

    6) Bowling Green (6-7)

    7) Eastern Michigan (6-7)

    8 ) Central Michigan (6-7)

    9) Toledo (5-7)

    10) Ball State (4-9)

    11) Northern Illinois (3-9)

    12) Buffalo (2-11)

    Notes…

Darrell Mason from Youngstown is a four-star running back, according to both Rivals.com and Scout.com. He only has offers from Akron and Illinois.

The Zips’ other high-profile recruit, four-star receiver Chris Fields, committed to Ohio State.

Here’s a list of the previous offers.

    A new offer…

Corey Linsley, offensive guard, Youngstown (Boardman)
Offers: Akron, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green and Stanford
    Height: 6-foot-4
    Weight: 285
    Speed: 5.2
Notes: I can’t remember Akron ever dueling with Stanford. Illinois, Stanford and Pitt are the front-runners, Linsley said. He does not attend the same high school as Mason, who goes to Ursuline.

Men’s basketball

Before I get to the articles, let me give credit to Kent State for a huge win over St. Mary’s last night.

A great performance by point guard Al Fisher and an awful shooting night for the Gaels led to a 65-57 Flashes win.

Unlike Akron, Kent State has managed to improve throughout the season. The Zips, of course, have been hampered by injuries. They still could find momentum before the MAC Tournament.

Here’s what today’s newspapers had to say about the Zips’ loss…

Plain Dealer — Despite the score, it was a victory for Akron, who can regroup with a full staff for the rest of the season.

Akron Beacon Journal — The Zips got good looks at the hoop, but were simply inaccurate.

Richmond Times-GazetteKeith Dambrot got Larry Sanders confused with Dikembe Mutombo. (Sanders really did win the game for the Rams. He’s a weapon. That’s why the Zips are pursuing a similar player in 6-foot-11.5 Zeke Marshall.)

Akron vs. Virginia Commonwealth - Running game notes

Men’s basketball

Keep refreshing your browser throughout the game…

The ABJ’s Tom Gaffney did an excellent job to preview the game. He says Akron is playing for a shot at the NIT. The Rams play superb perimeter defense. They are best in the nation at limiting opponents’ 3-pointers.

    The Zips are two-point favorites.

Former Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich ascended to coach Indiana after Kelvin Sampson resigned. It will be interesting to see if any players quit.

ESPN.com’s Kyle Whelliston breaks down the game, saying this game is critical if the CAA is to have another two-bid season. He suggests the Zips are overmatched.

My prediction: VCU is a difficult matchup for Akron — possibly the toughest of the year. The Zips have nothing to play for. The Rams do. It will take a huge boost from the home crowd to keep Akron in the game. If Eric Maynor plays well, the Zips will lose. Akron 65, VCU 71.

Gaffney said it appears like Jeremiah Wood isn’t limping much. I will go on the record to say playing him today was a bad idea, unless he only sees a few minutes.

VCU ran its layup line right through Akron’s cheerleaders before the Zips came out to the court. It seemed sort of disrespectful.

It’s kinda neat to see daylight when you look out the doors at Rhodes Arena.

Zips starters: Nick Dials, Cedrick Middleton, Nate Linhart, Brett McKnight and Chris McKnight.

It took awhile, but the fans finally got to sit with a Linhart transition layup.

Wood entered the game to a nice ovation.

Akron went on an 8-0 run with the momentum from Wood’s return. Wood scored four of them and had an assist on a Dials layup.

There’s nothing to the rumor about Elton Alexander arguing/fighting with a Miami coach. The PD writer was going to meet up with the coach after the game, but there was no brawl planned. Maybe some coffee.

Maynor has been on the bench for awhile. I’m not sure why. He’s definitely the Rams’ best player.

Wood doesn’t look as hoppy as usual. He’s probably a little tenative because of the knee.

Alexander and Gaffney both disagree about the last-minute charge call at Miami. The refs had only made six foul calls all half, they reason. It would have to be a serious breach to change that in the final minute in Oxford. To me, a foul is a foul, regardless of how the rest of the game had been called. As much as refs like to “let them play,” there has to be some reward for standing pat like Dials did.

Middleton has continued his strong play. He just drilled two 3-pointers.

Kent State is playing at top-25 St. Mary’s today. A Flashes win, and their tournament hopes are pretty good if they win out and lose in the MAC Championship game. The MAC would benefit from a two-bid season. That said, I still hope St. Mary’s curb stomps KSU.

Rams big man Larry Sanders has some serious athleticism. The freshman, who has several blocks today, is going to be very good.

I don’t like how Keith Dambrot manages the end of halves. It seems like he rarely goes 2-for-1 when his team has the ball with about 50 seconds left. The counterargument is that it’s best to get one good possession than two lousy ones, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

A group of young girls danced to several songs, including “AK-Rowdy” by local rap group V.E.C. Yes, that’s where the fan section’s name derives.

Halftime leaders: Jamal Shuler with seven points, Wood with seven rebounds, Joey Rodriguez with three assists, and Sanders with six blocks.

Ronnie Steward is dressed and seems to be limping from his bum hip.

The Zips started tenatively in the second half, as well as the first. VCU went on a 6-0 run.

Some of us wondered why Akron was playing so poorly a couple weeks ago. A better question would have been: How could they hope to win without Wood and Middleton healthy? With both of them back, it’s apparent they make a big difference on offense.

Wood needs to use the glass on his hook shots. It’s a much higher percentage to use the window.

The fans are not pleased with the CAA refs. You might remember a similar occurrence from when Austin Peay came to Rhodes Arena with their conference’s zebras. The fans booed them off the floor at halftime.

Middleton gave the Zips a brief lead with a 3, but Maynor responded with a three-point play. Since then, the Rams have controlled the game.

Akron is shooting 27 percent compared to VCU’s 41 percent.

The Zips are fighting back with strangulating defense and motivated rebounding. Wood just converted a three-point play.

VCU is in the double-bonus and Shuler made a free throw to give the Rams a three point lead.

Wood had a shot blocked that would have chipped the lead to one. It sure looked like a goal tend to me.

Maynor missed two foul shots. Dials came down and fired up a desperation, “I want to be the hero” 3-pointer. It was a dumb shot that missed badly.

Rodriguez made two foul shots. Milum baseball passed the ball out of bounds. Game over.

The Zips now have a two-game home losing streak. This is the first time since 2000-01 that has happened at Rhodes Arena. It’s not the worst thing in the world for Akron. The Zips have their best players playing well.

Final stats leaders: Shuler with 19 points, Wood with 12 rebounds and Rodriguez with five assists.

    Final score — Akron 52, VCU 57

Who is Virginia Commonwealth?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Men’s basketball

The nation will watch a matchup of two rising mid-majors tomorrow morning.

The difference between the teams: Virginia Commonwealth has consummated its rise, while Akron is searching for it’s first NCAA Tournament berth in 20 years.

The Rams dispatched the Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Eric Maynor’s 22 points and eight assists were a large reason. Maynor leads the Rams again this season in points (18.2) and assists per game (5.2). Stopping the 6-foot-2 guard will be a priority for Akron.

Fellow guard Jamal Shuler also shoulders some scoring burden. As Duke found out, you can’t leave him alone on the perimeter. Shuler went 4-for-5 on 3-pointers in that game.

Despite the scoring tandem, VCU leads the Colonial Athletic Association because of defense. They give up the fewest points in the CAA (59.5), and it’s not even close. The Rams allow 38.7 percent shooting. Larry Sanders, a 6-9 forward, gets a lot of blocks. Shuler is a league leader in steals.

VCU’s weakness is interior offense and rebounding, but the Rams are still pretty good. I expect the Zips to open as a five-point favorite.

I will liveblog from Rhodes Arena tomorrow morning. The game starts at 11 a.m.

Cavs deal RedHawk for RedHawk

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Men’s basketball

As the lesser of two deadline-day deals, Cleveland traded Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall to Seattle for Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West.

It’s not too often two college teammates are traded for each other. It’s even rarer when they are MAC players.

The other trade was Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes to Chicago for Ben Wallace and Joe Smith.

This trade bodes well for the Cavaliers this season. They essentially traded two rotation players for four. One of the four (Wallace) was a superstar as recently as two years ago. Thinking long-term, Wallace and Szczerbiak might not have much left, while Gooden and Hughes are in their primes.

Overall, I like it. Don’t bother discussing this issue here. The ABJ’s Brian Windhorst has a nationally renowned blog on Ohio.com. Click the link above.

Men’s basketball

Here is what the newspapers had to say…

ABJ Keith Dambrot says Akron can win in different ways with Jeremiah Wood out. Dambrot added that this is the best he’s ever seen his team play.

PD – Rumor has it, a Miami assistant coach got into it with Elton Alexander.

Enquirer – Akron got some “Zippy luck.”

Zips sweat out victory at Miami

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Men’s basketball

Cedrick Middleton went to the free throw line with a two point lead over Miami.

There were less than 10 seconds on the clock.

Sound familiar?

This time, Middleton swished both. Doug Penno, meanwhile, sat on the sidelines as a spectator. No bank shot prayer this time, pal.

The Zips beat the RedHawks 56-52 — their first victory in Oxford since 2001.

Perhaps the play of the game was when Nick Dials drew a charge from Tim Pollitz. If the referee did not blow the whistle, it would have been a three-point play for Pollitz.

Quade Milum dunked home the winning bucket for Akron with 30 seconds left. Dials sprawled to the rim and Milum crashed the boards. It almost appeared to be a set play.

Both teams played great defense, but Akron’s shooting was superb. The McKnight brothers, who both started, made critical shots in the perimeter-oriented offense. Chris McKnight also blocked a key shot from Michael Bramos with a minute left.

Middleton is back. He’s making shots, streaking to the hoop and playing confidently. If it continues, Middleton’s resurgence is a great story about how a coach’s faith in a player can pay off. You might remember a similar occurrence with Nate Linhart after the forward suffered through a tumultuous start of the season. Linhart had a tough game tonight, though, going 1-for-10 from the field.

With the win, Akron opened a two-game lead over Miami and all but secured a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament, considering Akron also holds a tie-breaker over the RedHawks.

This is exactly the kind of game where Jeremiah Wood excels. Without him, Akron’s offense was relegated to jump shots and slashing. I can only remember one set play to a post player. The Zips will get him back Saturday for a 11 a.m. game against Virginia Commonwealth.

Prediction: Akron 61, Miami 67

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Men’s basketball

The Zips are five-point underdogs against Miami tonight.

    Here are some newspaper clips…

Cincinnati Enquirer – Akron is still strong after losing Jeremiah Wood.

Plain Dealer — Akron is playing its last game without Wood. Also, MAC leading Kent State will go through a tough stretch of games.

Beacon Journal Cedrick Middleton is feeling better, too.

GoZips.com — The game will be on Time Warner, channel 119.

Prediction – Akron has been playing crummy. Miami has been fairly hot. The question is whether some of Akron’s spite from last March will carry over to this game. If it does and the Zips make some 3s, they should win.

Akron 61, Miami 67

Wood to return Saturday

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Men’s basketball

UofAZips.com is reporting that Keith Dambrot expects Jeremiah Wood to return by Saturday’s nationally televised game against Virginia Commonwealth.

While not quite a John Mackey return, seeing Wood back in half the expected time would provide a great boost. My concern is bringing him back against a nonconference opponent. There’s nothing wrong with giving him another week in order to get him back at 100 percent, rather than 80.
