Quaintance’s character shows through again

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Men’s basketball

With such an upstanding basketball program, the naughty characters are usually not as prominent.

Case in point is Haminn Quaintance. Despite Jim Christian’s disciplined program, Quaintance’s true color showed again last night as he mocked Akron players after the game.

The ABJ’s Patrick McManamon wrote about the trashiest player in the MAC.

Here are other clips from today’s newspapers…

The PD’s Bill Livingston mentioned it briefly, too.

The PD’s Elton Alexander’s game story

The ABJ’s Tom Gaffney’s game story

The ABJ’s Stephanie Storm’s game story

MACReportOnline.com’s Dave Ruthenberg had an interesting interview with Rick Boyages, associate commissioner of the MAC. Both are good guys. You should read it.

Men’s basketball

    Keep refreshing your browser…

Good news: They put me right behind the Zips bench. How close? I think my laptop is going to get sweaty.

Bad news: There are no power outlets, so my correspondence might be limited.

Worse news (for Kent State): Eric Thomas, a member of the Elite Eight team, was arrested for rape. He is currently a basketball coach at Ravenna High School. He allegedly broke into some dude’s house, assaulted him and raped the woman. As a result, KSU took down Thomas’ retired jersey banner. “It saddens and disappoints me to see someone that I have tremendous respect for be involved in such serious allegations,” KSU athletic director Laing Kennedy said in a statement.

Kent State is unveiling a live eagle as a mascot tonight. There’s your theme for the game: Rapes and eagles.

This game reminds me of the infamous Stark Scheme, cooked up by former associate athletic director Mike Waddell. The AK-Rowdies showed up to the M.A.C. Center with “Kent State - Stark Branch” T-shirts. In heel fashion, they disrobed to show their true alliance before the game.

This atmosphere is great. It makes you proud to be a college basketball fan. I’d say the crowd is 65-35 in favor of the Flashes.

Kent State’s students were really obnoxious during the national anthem. The singer missed at least three notes by my count, too.

During player introductions, the video board showed each Flashes’ “previous affiliation” instead of “high school.” I suppose that’s a side effect of having a team comprised mainly of mercenaries — err — transfers.

Chris Singletary is playing, despite getting tossed from the loss at Ohio.

Nate Linhart came out of the game with what appeared to be a charlie horse to his left thigh. I could be wrong.

KSU is holding the most annoying halftime contest ever. Two fans are taking turns at giving commentary of a Kent State highlight clip. It’s a bunch of unintelligible yelling.

      Halftime stats to chew on:

Jeremiah Wood leads the Zips with 11 points, including two foul shots off a flagarant foul. It was pretty ugly — the foul, not the shots.

Both teams have atrocious assist-to-turnover ratios. KSU: 5 to 12. Akron: 7 to 11.

Akron is 7-of-13 on 3-point attempts. Kent State is 2-of-7.

Steve McNees has five turnovers. He doesn’t look comfortable tonight.

A quarter flew out of nowhere to land behind Brett McKnight on the Zips bench midway through the second half. It came from the direction of Kent State’s student section. A lot of Kent State’s students look like the turbo-loser in the viral video My New Haircut. (Only click that link if you have tough skin and a sense of humor.)

Linhart got a little chippy with Mike Scott. Linhart went down hard on offense. He might have retaliated on defense (I didn’t see it). Then Scott got in his face. Linhart pushed Scott’s face away.

The Zips lost their lead with McNees running the point. He had eight turnovers and two assists.

The referees let Kent State’s stingy perimeter defense alone for the most part. They were grabbing, clawing and slapping. To the Flashes’ credit, if they won’t call it, keep going. The Flashes shot 31 free throws compared to Akron’s 15, but Akron also took 28 3-pointers, which are less likely to draw a foul.

Akron made a lot of silly errors at the end of the game that could have afforded the Zips a shot to tie. Linhart dragged his pivot foot on a miscommunication. The Zips allowed eight seconds to tick off the clock before fouling at the 12 second mark.

A mini-brawl broke out when McNees fouled Haminn Quaintance a little too hastily. Both parties got a technical foul. So did Quade Milum.

That’s when Kent State’s fans showed their true class by tossing garbage at the Akron players. After the incident, the stadium chanted, “We are Kent State.” Next time you do something disgraceful, stand over your victim and shout your name. It makes it set in better.

    Final — Kent State 75, Akron 69

Dials quotes:

“Both teams just wanting to protect their teammates. It’s a big rivalry. You can’t expect anything less than high-intensity. No hard feelings, though. It was just emotions getting the best of us.”

“They got in our shorts and made us do things we didn’t want to do. As a young team, we didn’t execute our plays like we did in the first half.”

Wood quotes:

“I didn’t see no punches thrown.”

“The crowd got them really hyped. They started playing harder and more aggressive.”

“Coach warned us at halftime that he didn’t like how the game was going. Coach said we need to come out and play our game. We won’t keep making all our shots like we were in the first half. The ball needed to go down a little more to the block.”

Dambrot quotes:

“I feel bad about the way the game ended. I think there’s a lot of respect between the programs. I respect Jim Christian. I think he’s one of the best coaches in the country. We model our program after Kent State. Our kids respect their kids. Their kids respect ours. I don’t think there’s any hard feelings between the teams at all, unless I’m mistaken.

“Last year, if we do get beat. Tonight, we get one block. It’s been a problem all year around. I didn’t think it was one of our better games. Kent punches us in the mouth.”

“I should have subbed more in the second half. We looked kind of dead on our feet.”

“We didn’t do a good job of throwing down to Wood.”

“I thought the first half was garbage. I told them at halftime, ‘If you shoot the jumper on the break, that’s fine. If you shoot after the ball gets to Wood, that’s fine. If you shoot late in the clock, that’s fine. But we’re shooting too many jumpers.’”

“Everything turned into a broken play because it was so loud. Our guards got in on us. We did not reciprocate on them.”

“I guess we fouled more than them. If you gamble and make bad plays, then you foul. I’m not going to make excuses.”

“I thought it was an extremely hard environment. Harder than Dayton.”

On 23 turnovers: “That might be our team’s career high. That might be one of McNees’ worst game. But they got in him. It’s a difficult environment. I’m going to ride him. I’m not going to lose confidence in him. You can’t make 23 turnovers and win. You’re lucky if you make 12 and win. We lead the league in assist-to-turnover ratio. We led it the wrong way tonight.”

“Quade’s a good kid. I’m sure Quaintance is a good kid.” (Me laughing out loud.)

On whether another MAC atmosphere matches KSU: “I guess maybe Ohio U. I like our place, but it can’t get any better than this place. It’s a great, great environment. There can’t be a better mid-level environment than this.”

“Hey, I root for Kent State. I don’t root for them when we play them.”

“Cedrick has had a really, really difficult time since the league started. I’ve never coached a better kid than Cedrick Middleton. He’s had a hard time physically, medically. I’m gonna ride him anyway. My belief is that if you’re high character and you’ve done it in the past, you’ll come roaring back.”

Men’s basketball

    Notes…

Heading into Akron’s game at Kent State, the PD’s Elton Alexander had a Q&A with Keith Dambrot.

Kent State is a four-point favorite tonight.

The game will be on Time Warner channel 79

GoZips.com says Kent State leads the all-time series, 62-60. Akron has won the last four.

Prediction – This will come down to Jeremiah Wood. If he is able to score inside, Akron will be able to get Kent State in foul trouble. The Zips’ attack will be more consistent if it focuses on Wood’s inside play than 3-pointers — especially at a hostile road environment. Don’t fool yourself, this game will be very close. It can go either way.

Akron 71, Kent State 68

Football

Akron might have the tall, downfield receiver it lost when Jabari Arthur graduated.

A source tells me Deryn Bowser, a receiver from a Los Angeles junior college, committed to Akron.

Bowser is 6-foot-3 and runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. Scout.com gives him four stars. Rivals.com gives him three.

    Also this…

Will Fleming from Hoban picked up an offer from Michigan State. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Two new commitments

Football

Since I posted this morning, two more players have committed to Akron.

One is Troy Gilmer, who I mentioned in the post immediately below.

    The other is…

Maurice Harvey, safety, Reedley C.C. (Calif.)
    Offers: Akron and Nebraska
    Height: 6-foot-3
    Weight: 195
    Speed: Not listed
Notes: Rivals.com gives Harvey three stars. This quote from a Rivals story fascinated me: “Harvey said that Cal-Berkeley, Kansas State, and Oregon are ‘about it’ in paying attention to him other than the Huskers.” Other schools of interest included Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Nevada, South Florida, Syracuse, West Virginia, California, Clemson and Florida State.

Akron has 22 verbal commitments so far, with three scholarships left to give out. The targeted positions include a high school receiver and another cornerback. Harvey is one of the highlights in this class, according to a source with the team.

Here is a list combined from Rivals.com, Scout.com, and ZipsNation.org’s Captain Kangaroo.

Adam Bice, OL
Marvase Byrd, DB
Andrew Colosimo, OL/TE
Kevin Funches, DB
Ryan Gardner, WR
Troy Gilmer, RB
James Harvey, DE
Maurice Harvey, DB
Jordan Miller, QB
Jared Province, DB
Josh Richmond, DB
Nate Schuler, LB
Norman Shuford, RB
Mitch Straight, OL
Brian Wagner, LB
Manley Waller, ATH

Who is Kent State?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Men’s basketball

As the MAC appears to be a two-team race, this game will be an indicator of how the seeding will develop.

Kent State and Akron are similar in many ways. Both rely on defense and have an offense that does not feature any one player.

Point guard Al Fisher gets the most shots. As the Jim Christian tradition goes, Fisher is a transfer from Redlands Community College in Oklahoma. His assist-to-turnover ratio isn’t great, but he is scoring more than he did at junior college.

Everyone remembers Haminn Quaintance, the long-armed post player who gets a lot of rebounds and blocks a lot of shots. Although he leads the MAC in field goal percentage, Quaintance does not have the post moves to create his own shot.

Mike Scott leads the Flashes in scoring. He is a versatile offensive player with post moves and shooting ability. The senior forward is a good rebounder, too.

Akron won’t have to worry about Kent State shooting many 3s, but the Flashes do run a swift offense that gets easy buckets. While the strength of Akron’s defense is on the perimeter, Kent State’s length and size makes it excel at interior defense. If there is one game all season that you can guarantee a close, low-scoring matchup, this is it. Tom Gaffney wrote about what the coaches expect of the atmosphere.

Football

    A new commitment…

Josh Richmond, cornerback, Milford Academy, NY
    Offers: Akron
    Height: 6-foot-0
    Weight: 181
    Speed: 4.4
Notes: Rivals.com also listed Richmond last recruiting season, although his speed was 4.6. The site now knocks 0.2 seconds off his 40 time and gives him three stars. Scout.com says Richmond is 6-1, had originally committed to Temple and also had interest in Minnesota. Regardless, this guy has the speed and size to be a standout MAC cornerback.

    Two new offers…

Troy Gilmer, running back, Huber Heights, Ohio
    Offers: Akron
    Height: 6-1
    Weight: 203
    Speed: 4.5
Notes: Gilmer has interest in Miami (Ohio), West Virginia and Ohio State, according to Scout.com. Ball State and Ohio are others, Rivals.com says. He’s a great athlete, who might be suited more toward fullback or linebacker because of his high motor.

Antoine Thompson, cornerback, Reedly C.C. (Calif.)
    Offers: Akron and Nevada
    Height: 6-1
    Weight: 195
    Speed: 4.4
Notes: He also has interest in North Carolina, West Virginia and Hawaii. Scout.com does not list Thompson.

Men’s basketball

Akron moved to No. 5 in the Mid-Major Top 25 and received two votes in the AP Poll.

Tomorrow, I hope to preview the game at Kent State (No. 9 in the Mid-Major poll). I will liveblog from the M.A.C. Center in case you can’t get a ticket.

Akron vs. Bowling Green - Running game notes

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Men’s basketball

    Keep refreshing your browser…

If this game was on TV, there is no way I’d be here. The blistering below-zero wind walking up to the JAR was unbearable. I’m still wiping the tears out of my eyes. Oh yeah, and the Packers are going to the Super Bowl tonight.

In other MAC action, Miami beat Buffalo, 64-57, in a poor shooting game.

It’s 20 minutes until gametime, but is a decent amount of people in the sideline bleachers. Oh, and Terry Pluto is here to write about the Zips for the PD. I don’t believe I have seen the ABJ’s columnist Patrick McManamon all season. (The paper did go Zips crazy on today’s sports page, though.)

Ronnie Steward is still in street clothes, along with Eric Coblentz. Steve Swiech is in uniform. You might have noticed Swiech’s polite nature from his posts on ZipsNation.org. He just walked up and greeted each of the referees.

They put me directly at halfcourt on press row. It’s definitely the best seat in the house. Of course, I’ll miss out on the wisdom/sarcasm of Elton Alexander and analysis of Tom Gaffney.

BG starting lineup: Nate Miller, Chris Knight, Joe Jakubowski, Marc Larson and Darryl Clements. Akron starting lineup: Cedrick Middleton, Nick Dials, Nate Linhart, Jimmy Conyers and Jeremiah Wood.

Dials beat Jakubowski off the dribble on the first possession. Although the Zips wanted Jakubowski, he is no better than Steve McNees on defense.

This would be a good game to run a series of plays for Conyers and get him comfortable on offense.

Bowling Green is a possible first-round match-up in Cleveland.

The Zips are tightening up on defense and not letting BG get into any set plays. Akron is also getting what it wants on offense. We might be looking at a real blowout.

Miller has two fouls. The referees just did him a favor by calling him for a travel before he bowled into Middleton.

Brett McKnight came off the bench to drill a 3. Darryl Roberts entered an grabbed a steal on a fast break. These guys know how to play.

    The teams traded five-point runs.

For the first time I can remember, the McKnight brothers are on the floor at the same time. If you add Wood, Linhart and Dials to that mix, the Zips will grab a lot of rebounds.

Middleton and Dials are scoreless. It’s a sign of a good offense when you can blow out an opponent without getting a point from your top scoring guards.

Brett McKnight might be the most versatile player on the team. He is coming off the court because he has two fouls. You probably won’t see a lot of him when the opponent has a good post presence. He is still a defensive liability.

You’ve seen the three-guard offense, but how about the three-point guard offense. Keith Dambrot has McNees, Roberts and Dials on the floor right now (along with Mike Bardo and Quade Milum).

The Zips sprinted to the locker room on a high note: McNees finally converted an alley-oop — to Milum. It was Milum’s second dunk of the half. He has 12 points.

Conyers picked up his third foul. He has a tough assignment in Miller, who has seven points. BG’s Knight picked up his third foul, too.

Middleton finally got in the books with a 3-pointer. I hate to draw a comparison to Dennis Kennedy, but both guys are really kind people, coming off nagging injuries. Both were expected to lead their teams. In Middleton’s case, though, he’s still injured and still contributing.

That’s Conyers’ fourth foul. He’s out and Linhart is guarding Miller.

Quade converted his third dunk. That’s 14 points. Add another layup for 16.

This game has been pretty dull. Fans always want their team to win, but this isn’t competitve on either end. Games like Ohio and Nevada (last season) keep the JAR filled.

The AK-Rowdies fooled Jakuboski into heaving a 3-pointer two seconds prematurely as he still had time before the shot clock ran out. Good stuff.

Milum has found his niche in college basketball. He can dominate a game when an unathletic player is guarding him. I don’t have the stats with me, but you will be surprised.

The AK-Rowdies reminded everyone that it’s 8:30 and Kent State still sucks.

Dials got in the scorebook with a 3-pointer. He has been playing good defense on Miller, who really should be posting him up to take advantage of the height and weight difference.

I want to ask Dambrot about his rotation. He has played 11 the past couple weeks. He wanted a nine-man rotation. I wonder if he still feels that way, and if so, who loses playing time?

Garbage time officially comes with 5:44 remaining. I don’t know why Nick Goddard does not wear his jersey on the bench. He has to put it on before checking in. Also entering the game are Jeremy Sallee and Tim Carroll. It took Goddard about two seconds before jacking an off-balance 3. It was excusable because the shot clock was running out.

It’s smart to get the reserves in this early with Kent State looming Wednesday. Brett McKnight stayed on the floor. It’s also good to let him be the center of the offense, because that might be a reality full-time next season.

Goddard hit a fall-away NBA-range 3 with a hand in his face. It was the loudest the crowd got all night. That shot got Akron to 80 points, which gets every fan six free wings at Scorchers in the Valley.

I’m not sticking around for post-game quotes. I will predict them for you… Dambrot: “Bowling Green is good, but I thought our guys worked hard.” Milum: “I just made a lot of shots.” BG’s coach Louis Orr: “Akron is a heckuva team and very hard to play in this building, but I thought we could have played better.”

    Final — Akron 80, Bowling Green 44

Snyder transfers to Ohio State

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Men’s golf

Akron’s top golfer has transferred to Ohio State, according to Amanda Aller, UA’s sports information director for men’s golf.

Vaughn Snyder has been central to the Zips’ rise in the MAC. He will now play at the same school as Jack Nicklaus.

Who is Bowling Green?

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Men’s basketball

Under first-year coach Louis Orr, Bowling Green (7-8, 2-1 MAC) has transformed from a 3-point jacking squad to one that clamps down on defense.

The Falcons hold opponents to the lowest field goal and 3-point shooting percentages in the MAC. Give some credit to Otis Polk and Marc Larson, BGSU’s sophomore centers who are third and fourth, respectively, in the conference’s blocked shots rankings.

With the graduation of 3-point marksman Martin Samarco, Nate Miller is a bigger part of the offense. His numbers (13.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg) have not improved much because he is shooting only 42 percent from the field.

You might remember point guard Joe Jakubowski. Akron recruited the freshman who chose Bowling Green instead.

The teams play tonight at 7 at Rhodes Arena.

    Notes…

Akron is a 14-point favorite. That’s a pretty fair line.

The ABJ’s Tom Gaffney compared this year’s team to last.

Behind 26 points from Bert Whittington, Ohio downed Kent State in Athens, 71-59.

Prediction – It would take an abhorrent effort from Akron to lose this game. But it’s possible. Ask Ohio, who was out-rebounded, out-defended and out-shot. Ask, Cincinnati, who saw Bowling Green’s unimpressive offense play its most efficient game. Also, Bowling Green traditionally has given Akron problems at Rhodes Arena. I might even be persuaded to take Bowling Green with the spread. Nah.

Akron 72, Bowling Green 56

Football

In case your mind is on pigskin, the ABJ’s Marla Ridenour wrote about Domenik Hixon, who is in frigid Green Bay today as the Giants’ kick returner.

The most interesting quote is how Denver’s Mike Shanahan shows some sour grapes about Hixon’s success — albeit limited — in New York.

Around the MAC

Men’s basketball

Kent State vs. Ohio is one of ESPN.com’s 10 key games of the weekend.

That preview says Ohio lost to an “excellent” Akron team on Thursday. Anyhow, it got me wondering how I would rank the MAC.

    So I did…

    1. Kent State
    1. (tie) Akron
    3. Ohio
    4. Miami
    5. Western Michigan
    6. Toledo
    7. Buffalo
    8. Central Michigan
    9. Eastern Michigan
    10. Bowling Green
    11. Ball State
    12. Northern Illinois

    Notes…

Kent State and Akron is a toss-up. Put a gun to my head, and I will say Akron because of the teams’ performances against Buffalo. Both were close games, but Kent got to play at home. Looking at other common opponents doesn’t show much. Both teams blew out Youngstown State and Miami, although Kent State did it on the road. The other argument is that Kent’s RPI is superior by more than 40 slots. We shall find out on Wednesday at the M.A.C. Center.

There are no terrible teams in the MAC. Ball State and Northern Illinois have shown that by beating Toledo and Central Michigan, respectively. That is good news for the Zips. If this holds form, no team will escape the MAC West with fewer than five losses. That means the Zips (or Kent State) would have a great shot at the NIT as the regular season conference champion.

Besides Kent/OU, the other game to watch this weekend is Toledo @ Western Michigan.
