Hoban safety commits to Zips

Football

As a local three-star player and son of Akron’s defensive coordinator, Will Fleming was one of the most interesting stories of the recruiting season.

The plot thickened when Hawaii and Boise State offered Fleming a scholarship from across the country.

In the end, Fleming chose to stay home and play for his father, Jim Fleming.

“My dad was really excited about the news,” Will Fleming told Rivals.com.

Fleming is ranked as the No. 44 player in Ohio. He is Akron’s third three-star recruit, according to Rivals.com. Scout.com says Fleming is the No. 122 safety in the country and gives him two stars.

Men’s basketball

The Zips dipped to 10th in the Mid-Major Top 25 after peaking at fifth last week.

Kent State climbed from ninth to seventh.

Toledo will visit Rhodes Arena Wednesday. I’ll probably break down the Rockets tomorrow.

Will Fleming - I bet he starts next year. Coach Fleming has always showed favortism toward other kids and you can bet your life he will show some with Will. That’s really too bad for the other ZIPS! What a SAD SAD day in Akron!!

    Fred,

Out of curiousity, who are some players who did not play, but should have? Also, who played, but shouldn’t have?

Will Fleming is one heckuva football player. This is a good pickup for Akron because I know they didn’t show much interest in him until late. It’s also good because he is from the area(JD fails to notice the talent around here0.

Fred, It’s really sad that you can be so negative toward an eighteen year old you have never met, who has just made the first of many important decisions he will make in his life. I know for a fact that one of the things that drew Will towards Boise State was the fan following. He has read your many negative comments on here. In the end he decided that he would like to be a part of changing the atmosphere of Zip football and hopefully turning all of the “haters” into supporters. I don’t know if it’s your son, nephew, cousin etc… that Coach Fleming is not playing, but that should be between the player and the Coach and in any event, it should not be cause to rant on another new recruit who has chosen to play for the Zips. Take a deep breath and have some perspective on the situation and either support your team or don’t, but know the players feel the negative fan support.

Observer, Trust me, JD doesn’t fail to see the talent around here. What happens is that “around here” fails to see that Akron is a viable option for football. And an “around here” coach would rather tell his player to go to a bottom of the barrel Big 10 school then go to a MAC school.

  6. Observer Says:

G-Mann, I agree that many kids from the area do not want to attend Akron, but at the same time JD does not take chances on kids from the area. Every Division 1 head football coach takes a few chances with scholarship players in each recruiting class. I just think it is best to take a chance on a local kid, also, if that player does pan out it helps your local fan base.

It is nice to see JD recruit a quality kid from a local Catholic school. Go Zips!

Katherine - No, I don’t have a son that plays for Akron. But, I bet you’re related to Will!! However, I’ve followed the team for years. There was nothing negative against Will, only Coach Fleming. Again, Coach Fleming has and will continue to show favortism. He hasn’t been fair to these young men. Just asked the entire D-Line or even those that have left. Why don’t you find out what they think of Coach Fleming. They deal with him everyday, not you. I guess the truth just hurts. Some people don’t like facing reality and you’re one of them.
