UA battling eminent domain suits

Posted November 29th, 2007 by mrasor

Football

Akron has six lawsuits keeping it from having all the land it desires for the football stadium, the ABJ writes.

David Lee Morgan recapped the season.

By the way, Zippy has a bye this week, but she will face the winner of Cavman and Otto. Vote for the weaker mascot, which is probably Cavman. Cavman has a better record than Otto but accumulated 6,000 fewer votes during the regular season. (It’s such a joke that I’m talking about this crap seriously.)

The Nemer Bros are going to make Uof A pay for the Sun Grill

I feel bad for the business owners, but they’re only delaying the inevitable at the expense of Zips fans, whom they serve.

The sooner they get out, the sooner they can find a new building.

  3. Big Guy in GA Says:

The good news is none of the six properties block the stadium footprint and UofA could move forward with that part on schedule. The bad news is, it sounds like UofA officials want to start the entire project at the same time and not just the stadium only. I agree the business owners are only delaying the inevitable and all they’re going to get is the current appraised value of the property. The more they delay. The less time the owners will have to find new buildings before being forced to move. IMO, from what I’ve read and heard. The Nemer Bros are looking to force UofA to give them another location in the same area using bad PR to force them from the lawsuits. Methinks that’s not going to work.

The Nemers involved in this situation aren’t brothers. I’ve spoken to Manny about this. His intentions of the fighting to the end is not to purposely delay the stadium. In fact, he wants the stadium to be built around them - it’s just unfortunate that the U of A has not been dealing with them the same way they have the big money hungry chains.

  5. Ben Williams Says:

    Morning Mr. Rasor…

Didn’t I read somewhere that UA actually offered the Nemer’s enough money to set up shop in a new location and they turned it down? I’m not sure if it was grumblings from someone or not…

  6. mrasor Says:

    What’s up Ben?

I’m sure they’re getting fair offers. The problem is, they will never actually be compensated for the customer base they built or the work they put into the businesses over the years.

Eye tink dat de eevil Dannie Ferrie willl knot pay those Nemer aliens whut dey r werth. Dey make bedder cofffee and sudz dan everrrone else on de Xchange St. strip, and yet dey are paid mucho less dinero by de eevil Ferrie…er, Zippie. Dey gived all dat payola to the stinky-poo Larrie Whose…er, I mean dat house owned by an aministrador’s son, and now dey give de skimpy offerz to de Wild Thingy…er, the coffee and beer guyz. Dey should juss sit der and get nuthing. Dat will show de eeevil Zippie who’z boss!

    Tis’ true, tis’ true.

I wondering if they’re holding out for first floor space in the new res halls, which I KNOW UA won’t give them because no parent wants their kids to live above a bar..I just hope that when this is all done, there’s a mix of chains and local places around campus, and not just a bunch of white-washed familiar names.

Forbes Avenue here at Pitt is a good example of what to do…

  9. Ben Williams Says:

Aye, tis’ true, tis’ true. (See what Pittsburgh does to you?)

I hope that they are able to figure out something soon. Regardless, there’s NO WAY UA will give them space in the new halls (universities are distancing themselves from the student-alcohol thing now). I just hope that the eventual zip strip (or Roo town) is a mix of local dives and national chains, like Forbes Ave. here at Pitt.

Dis enema domain isshue es confuzing. Seemz like a loot of trubble to bild a beeeg shtadium dat only a few tousand peeple will come to. All doz meeelions could bee gived to meee instead, my reelly smart ajent Fegan sez.

  11. Akronite Says:

Hmm… from all this ignorant talk, maybe the U of A should push their academics as much as they do their sports?

Funny that people would rather have chain restaurants and coffee houses rather than hometown establishments like Aroma, Cafe Mommos, The Diamond Steakhouse, Rockne’s, Diamond Deli, Luigi’s, or Frank’s Place.

As long as we can keep the bums at McDonald’s who harass students — that’s really all that matters.

And the Plasma Center so parents can drop their kids off there.

To clarify, the U of A never worked with Manny like they did Jack Morrison Jr., the Blickles of Micky Dees, and The Crowne Plaza. Its all about the politics, and unfortunately Manny didn’t get treated the way he deserves after helping the City of Akron and U of A students, professors, and police officers.

  12. Lee Adams Says:

Hey, if I owned the Sun for all those years there is NO way Uof A could ever compensate for lost futre income. They would have to find me some land NEARby and set me up again so I could take advantage of the new stadium traffic..shoot if I had a few hundred grand I’d open a bar/restaurant along Exchange…

  13. Akronite Says:

I agree, but U of A hasn’t done that, so this is why unfortunately these businesses have to battle eminent domain.

  14. G-Mann Says:

Ah, Lee, not too bright are you. Build on the other side of Exchange so that the people building Spicer Village can Eminent Domain you. What you say is “just” is in all actuality the extortion of the citizens of Ohio.

  15. Lee Adams Says:

G-Mann, no I’m not good at the shyster bit…but if I could get the State of Ohio to keep paying me for my property that it is stealing from me…why not? Us state employees are taking YOUR tax dollars and retiring in Arizona. We may not have any water in 50 yrs(I’ll be gone then) but we will always enjoy making fun of the nimrods who don’t even have the sense to get in out of the cold or make fun of people they don’t know. never can tell can you?

  16. shae Says:

Sadly, no one has made mention of the people who have been rendered HOMELESS due to the use of eminent domain but the U of A to build this stadium. We came across a veteran of WWII last night who was walking to a friend’s house that was putting him up for the night. We gave him a ride and our last $60.
Eminent domain was used to take over his landlord’s property and he (and the other families living in this rental property) were given only FIVE days notice that they had to leave. This man and these other people have no where to turn to for help. He wrote letters to the governor seeking assistance and to no avail. Imagine losing your home at Christmas due to no fault of your own — no failure to pay rent, no trouble, no misdeeds, just absolute greed from the same government he risked his life to serve.

  17. Lee Adams Says:

shae: If he is a VET tell him to go to 617 Carroll St. Ask for William Miller. They can house VETS. If he had at least a general discharge and gets benefits, they will work with him if they have room. Do it. Tell him to mention my name.
