Bowling Green offensive breakdown

Posted October 31st, 2007 by mrasor

Football

The theme — Bowling Green loooooooves to pass. Its 300 yards per game was 12th in the nation. That said, their rushing offense hasn't been much to speak of, until the Kent State win two weeks ago. KSU's Doug Martin said, "I dare you to run." And they won the game by doing it. So to say the Falcons can only pass is incorrect.

Key players — Quarterback Tyler Sheehan has entered the elite level of MAC quarterbacks, along with Nate Davis and Dan LeFevour. Sheehan's downfall is turnovers. He has thrown 10 interceptions. Lately, freshman running back Willie Jeter has made the offense more balanced. Sheehan has three pretty reliable receivers, led by Freddie Barnes. The Falcons have also hit Jeter out of the backfield quite a bit.

How Akron can stop them — The Zips need to blitz a lot. Bowling Green doesn't protect Sheehan that well. This will be a very important game for Davanzo Tate and Reggie Corner.

    Notes…

The new depth chart is a colossal disappointment to me. Chris Jacquemain is still the starting quarterback. Here are some minor changes… Andre Jones and Phillip Morris now share the secondary kick return job. Bryan Williams remains the primary weapon. John Stec retook the punting job (not that he ever lost it) with an above average game at Buffalo.

The ABJ's David Lee Morgan takes readers through John Mackey's return. The only thing that would make his return more amazing is if Akron was still in the hunt (or somehow got back in it with consecutive wins).

Zippy leads by almost 800 votes over poor, defenseless Cosmo. Vote here.

    I'm smelling blowout, folks.

Boy, that QB situation is puzzling. Sounds almost like JD thinks Jacq is a first-half player, and might change things up with CJ7 in the 2nd half? It really won't matter, because the Zips are reeeeeeeling, and the spiral continues Saturday. The real question is, how long will The Powers That Be put up with a product that repels, rather than draws in, fans?

  2. Chris Says:

Actually the game is on Friday night at 7 pm EST on ESPNU. In case you were going to watch.

  3. mrasor Says:

Thanks Chris. I keep thinking this is a home game for some reason.

  4. Mark Says:

And to add on what Chris said, if you get Time Warner Digital Cable, they added it about a month or two with little fanfare. Its like Ch. 117, up there next to ESPNEWS and ESPN Classic.

  5. Matt Says:

Rasor, what do you know about Domonkos?

  6. Zipsfan Says:

Unless you're on the staff, or ask the coach directly, there could be so many reasons that cj7 isn't playing that you should stop harping on it every week. Could he help? Probably, but he has done something that rewarding him with playing time, even mop up duty in Buffalo, isn't on the coaches list. I do enjoy your views, just tired of the qb thread. No one asks at the press conferences either.

  7. Lee O Says:

I would say most Zip fans want to know what's up with CJ7.
You are probably in the minority ZF. Mike is about a zip fans only chance of getting the story, so stay on it Mike!

  8. Chris Says:

    mrasor you are welcome.
Mark thanks for the cable FYI
Zipsfan I'm guessing that we will see CJ7 in the BG game just based on how JD described CJ11's performance this season. JD expressed no support for CJ11 which if one reads between the lines, CJ11 is out and CJ7 is on for one last chance. I don't mean to take over mrasor's response here but, the qb thread has had legs this season because it's the one position we had the least amount of experience at going into the season. Buffalo and Temple beat us with experienced qb's and we essentially had lost the WM game who also had an experienced qb. This BG game is also going to be tough because we are going up against Tyler Sheehan another experienced qb. This season other teams qb's have been better than ours and there seems to be a correlation with our W/L record. If you want to start another thread how about this one: How come our LB's are getting beat in the passing game? Teams are throwing underneath us at will and are thus marching down the field with a lot of time of possession minutes. We are thin at DL and so in the 2nd halfs we don't have as strong a pass rush. It would be nice to put a lot of points on the board early and force the other team to have to pass so our LBs could have the edge. But we are usually behind and our LBs get beat with play action. So there it, the LB thread has been officially started. Lets hear it.

  9. Nate Says:

Ok, you say our QBs are weaker than the opposition. So true. But please tell me one position, JUST ONE, where the Zips are superior to most teams? The opponents eliminate Jabari from the equation, because he's the only WR threat. So don't use him. Name me ONE position that opposing coaches "fear" in game prep when they're facing Akron.

    Comin' up empty? Exactly.

  10. mrasor Says:

Akron offensive line protects the QB well. Any team would love to have Bryan Williams. The linebackers are above average. The cornerbacks are great. Happy?

  11. Zipsfan Says:

I also am interested but no one is actually asking the question. To whine about it every post isn't getting the answer. It's not even Mike's job to find out, but we already have his take on cj7 playing.

  12. Zipsfan Says:

It seems the coaches need to step up their game and start coaching week to week, game to game and half to half. To say your qb is a one half guy is an excuse for no successful second half adjustments by the coaching staff. In watching this team over JD's tenure, I'm hard pressed to name a game where they made the adjustments at the half that solved first half difficulties.

  13. Jon Says:

Hey Rasor, according to you, if Akron puts that Carlton kid in, with all those great assets you listed, we'd be right in the MAC hunt? What fantasy world are you livin' in, son? I hope Brookhart does play old "No. 7" so he can show us what a schlep he is, and shut you up for awhile. That take is played, brotha, played. Linebackers above ave.? Corners "great?" Why am I still reading this blog?

  14. Chris Says:

Mrasor makes a valid point that our OL has improved a lot since the season started. Our running game outside the tackles is pretty good and our kick return guys are pretty decent.

  15. mrasor Says:

I'm not saying Carlton Jackson is great. He might even be as bad as Jacquemain, but the coaches are foolish to keep him on the bench as bad as he has played the past two second halves.

Jon, the corners both have a shot at getting drafted. Brion Stokes is one of the best LBs in the MAC. Doug Williams and Kevin Grant are above average.

A quarterback makes a world of diffence in football at any level.

  16. zipsdad Says:

We have to all remember that CJ11 and CJ7 are both sophmores….I know we would have liked them to succeed like the other couple first year quarterbacks in the MAC have these past few years, but with a new offensive line gelling and 2 primary weapons lost in the spring, it has been an uphill battle….I guess the only way to look at it is at the end of the season, did the QB's improve or not…
