Mackey back on depth chart

John Mackey is listed as backup to Wayne Cobham at rover in the updated depth chart.
I don’t think he’ll play. Jared Cecchetti was on the depth chart for two weeks (if I remember correctly) before he got serious playing time. And he never tore his ACL.
Still, this is an emotional boost — even to me as a huge Mackey fan. I already feel more confident about the Zips’ hopes against Buffalo just by seeing him on that PDF.

Other changes…
John Stec and Andy Hildreth now share the punting duties. Stec almost singlehandedly kept Akron in contention at Ohio State, but he hasn’t done much since. The coaches are about three games late in seeing what Hildreth can do.
Brian Flaherty has assumed the role of place kick snapper, on top of his duty as punt snapper. Mike Schepp previously held the place kick snapper job.
Dennis Kennedy is completely off the depth chart. Alphonso Owen is Andre Jones’ new backup at punt returner. Somebody who has more time on his hands needs to write a story about what happened to DK.
The starting nose guard will be either Nate Robinson or Eric Lively.
The Zips are going with an all-true freshman rotation at defensive end. Behind Almondo Sewell is now Deni Odofin.
Yamari Dixon has worked his way into a tie with Jones at free safety.

Notes…
The Buchtelite’s Vincent Dorsey wrote an interesting feature on Michael Taggart, a walk-on linebacker from Green High School. Jim Fleming seems to like him. Recently, he has been getting some reps on the scout team at tight end, as well.
Akron is a 1 or 1.5 point underdog for Saturday’s game at Buffalo.
Zippy is leading by fewer than 400 votes as of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. I’ll probably be reading until 2 a.m., so somebody should do my voting for me.

Has there been any talk of trying out Dennis Kennedy as a receiver? He seems to have pretty good hands in that regard. I know he doesn’t have the prototypical size you’d like to see in a receiver but the one handed catch he made earlier this season (in the UConn game I believe) may have been the best one I have seen for the Zips all year.

Many of you have been calling for the punting change…although I am biased, can’t overlook the fact that there have no runbacks of punts this or last year which is mainly due to hangtime….a line drive punt ends in disaster…also there have also been a good percentage of punts inside the 20 and fair catches….I am aware that average, both gross and net are the main stat that punters are judged on, but scores off the punting game are paramount….I am also aware that the short field given with a poor punt is also critical….in the final analysis, game experience also plays an important role….we’ll see

Kennedy also made a great catch at NC State. Move him to WR.
I wish the Zips competed as hard on the field as they do for positions on the depth chart, if they did, this would be a non story.

I’m surprised Jim Flemings likes anyone. This kid, Michael Taggart, needs to be real careful with Fleming. He needs to watch his back at all times. Fleming is such a loser. Jim Fleming has such a bad personality against these guys. Always playing the favorites game. It’s not about favoritism, it’s about who can play and get the job done. This shouldn’t be personal, but he makes it personal against these guys. Such a bad bad attitude toward guys he doesn’t know. What’s really sad about him is he gives no reason for disliking these guys.
I think if Akron had better Defensive Coords., they would be a much better team. He makes these guys not want to come and give their all. Why would you want to play and give you all when you have someone that doesn’t appreciate you and shows negativity throughout. He’s a real loser

OH, I forgot to say that I can’t see Lively being on anybody’s depth chart. He’s such a terrible player, all around, nose guard, tackle, end, etc. It doesn’t make a difference which position he plays. Just terrible. Remember Almondo, a true freshman, came in and took his spot. That should say enough about him. But I forgot, that’s a favorite of Fleming. Boy, it pays to be in with Fleming.

Speaking of depth charts, it appears that Sean Hakes has now lost his co-starting job to Chris Debowski over at Orange Coast JC. Hakes gave way to Debowski in the 4th quarter of the previous game against Palomar and Debowski almost rallied the team to a win. Then last week against perenial power Fullerton Debowski had a breakout game to lead OCC to a 2OT win. Hang in there Sean, you might still get another chance.

I’m glad to see we might finally get someone else to punt! Zipsdad makes a few lousy points here, justifying an overall poor punting game. No, no punts have been returned for scores, but against Temple, the 16 yard punt gave Temple great field position that led to a FG. Field position has not been good, so let’s give someone else a try!
