Jacquemain tops depth chart

Football
Chris Jacquemain is now the starting quarterback, according to the updated depth chart.
J.D. Brookhart benched Carlton Jackson against UConn for skipping a morning’s worth of meetings and treatments for his ankle on Tuesday, a source tells me.
Either the coach decided to extend that punishment, or he liked what he saw out of Jacquemain. My guess is probably the latter, given Jacquemain’s decent stats against a staunch defense.
Westerrn Michigan, Saturday’s opponent, is pretty good at pass defense, allowing opponents fewer than 200 yards per game through the air. The real weakness to exploit is the Broncos’ run defense, which is 115th in the nation.

Other changes to the depth chart…
Phillip Morris replaces Andre Jones as the second kick returner.
Andy Hildreth is the permanent holder.

Media clips…
The Buchtelite’s Adam Ferrise wrote an interesting feature about John Mackey and his knee injury. He seems to think Mackey has a good shot at getting that medical redshirt.
The Buchtelite’s Vincent Dorsey wrote about the game, including some quotes from Brion Stokes and Jacquemain.
Miscellaneous
The Buchtelite also spoke with Ohio’s education chancellor Eric Fingerhut about the plan to combine UA and Cleveland State. He was vague and spoke in generalities, often dodging the real question. When I say “Finger,” you say “Middle.”

Finger (middle) Hut’s evasiveness should come as no surprise. This is a very bad idea from the start, and only a Cleveland based politician would be receptive to it. Even though Akron has a much stronger and better university, if they ever merge guess who is bound to be in the catbird seat. Myself, I see no reason on the part of Akron to even consider the idea, of course we may not have a say in the matter.

Merging with CSU is a bunch of crap. CSU is a crap university and if it can’t stand on its own two feet, let it die. They are a zero for Akron. Damn politicians …

Cleveland State and Akron are both identified as “non-selective” by collegiate guides. Moreover, CSU and Akron are both in the lowest tier (Tier 4) among research universties by the Carnegie Foundation. So why, exactly, is Akron superior to CSU?

Dan, visit both, you can see for your self.
We have many Akron grads working for us.
I don’t even know a CSU grad.

Akron gets a Center for Urban Studies and a convocation center … CSU gets a University and everything else it lacks … as Zippy says, go walk around each one and decide for yourself whether the Akron Advantage exists or not (a hint: it does).
Just polled two of my co-workers … neither one knows a CSU grad. Both know MANY U of A grads.
It’s all politics with a hint of socialism.

I will say that I am fed up with this “merging” universities concept. They say they want to streamline education. Well this is how you do it. Close CSU, completely. Split the students (10,000 or so) between the University of Akron and Kent State. Kent State becomes NEO’s sole Liberal arts school. Retains it’s Liquid crystal research foundation. University of Akron becomes the Engineering, Psych, Sociology, History, Education, Business and “technical” school. Next, you take away OSU’s Naval and Air grants. Toledo receives the Naval grant (they are on a coast after all) Akron receives the Air grant. then they can work with NASA Glenn on aerospace polymer technologies to make satelites and rockets stronger and lighter.
It will never happen, but that’s my opinion on it. Cleveland doesn’t need a “University” they need a 2 year college. Tri-C then moves into the CSU campus and is an associate/prep school to send students to The University of Akron and KSU.

Don’t forget, Cleveland also has John Carroll University downtown. Along with Tri-C and umpteen other little schools (Notre Dame University, et al), what really is the NEED for CSU to exist? Their limited sports teams are crap. No draw there. Their Prez is a KSU retread, who is probably floating this merger idea.
Akron has it all, including a top LAW SCHOOL and NURSING SCHOOL.
I agree, why should the state continue to fund so many undervalued colleges? Have you ever counted how many there are in this state? It’s frikkin unbelievable.

I took some graduate courses at CSU and was not impressed. I could register for classes by phone as early as 1987 at UA and I had to register in person at CSU in the late 90s. WTF?
CSU should close and Tri-C should take over the campus (good idea G-Mann). I do know a few CSU grads and they seem to be decent enough workers so I can’t say anything bad about the college in that respect. Its really a small campus with only a couple of buildings. Other than the Convo, nothing much is there.

I don’t care if Cleveland State is Ivy League. It just won’t work having a two-prong campus so far apart. I really want to see what savings there will be?
Are all English classes going to be at CSU? All Chem classes at UA? Fingerhut mentioned the overlapping of core classes. If this is what he has in mind, he’s going to enfuriate a lot of students.
Here’s what wouldn’t be awful: trading programs. I don’t know what Cleveland State does particularly well. But say they’ve got a great education program. We send our profs up I-77 and they trade us the desireable assets in their law program, for example.
I really don’t see why Kent State and Youngstown State wouldn’t be connected in this as well. And while we’re at it, what’s the deal with Bowling Green and Toledo remaining untouched. It can’t be because both are remarkable institutions. (Toledo has open enrollment, like UA, last I checked.)

I have some insight to what they are planning through contacts in Columbus.
Nursing school stays in Akron, engineering school stays in Akron, law school goes to Cleveland, NEOUCOM goes to Cleveland.
CSU and Akron will be run by one set of administrators.
Kent and YSU integrate several programs, with one set of administrators.
Toledo and BGSU will integrate programs, with one set of administrators.
Not decided yet what would happen to Wright State, but likely would go to OSU.
Smaller schools like Shawnee State and a few OSU regional campuses in Southern Ohio would become part of OU.
Miami will likely be untouched.
