Brookhart wants to narrow QB field

By the end of the first week of camp, Akron’s quarterback situation should be a bit clearer.
The team will narrow the three-candidate race to two by then, J.D. Brookhart said during yesterday’s MAC Media Day.
David Lee Morgan’s ABJ story also confirms that David Harvey has left the team due to academic reasons.
I found his quote to be somewhat interesting: “It’s disappointing not having David, but we all have requirements to take care of,” Brookhart said. “Unfortunately, that’s the way it is, and we’re moving on.”
It mirrors what he said during spring practice, except I believe he used the word “obligations,” rather than “requirements.” At the time, it sounded a lot like he was helping a sick family member or something nobler than flunking out.
I will say it again — and this prediction rests on no inside information — I don’t think we’ve seen the last of David Harvey.

A new scholarship offer:
Manley Waller, cornerback, Decatur, Ga.
Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Ohio and Alabama-Birmingham
Height: 5-foot-8
Weight: 160
Speed: 4.46
Notes: Waller is the son of former Olympic gold medalist sprinter Gwen Torrence. Scout.com says he is a physical player, despite his size. Waller could be considered a kick returner or wide receiver at the next level as well.
Likelihood: With four of the top MAC teams in the mix, Waller would be a great commitment. Not only are you getting a guy you want, but your on-field competition loses a player they want. He also has interest in Auburn and Ohio State. (In a related note, I have interest in Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie.)

Let’s be honest…if David Harvey flunks out his freshman year at Akron, just where else IS there? Aren’t college athletic standards pretty consistent throughout the NCAA? Unless you’re thinking we’ll “see him again” in a mugshot, or something. Which is, unfortunately, something to ponder, considering the way some guys throw away their free college education and any hopes of a professional career.
Glad JD isn’t too concerned about it, because I sure am. He was our best weapon last season, without question.

Assuming he is a reasonable human being (which may be too high of an assumption nowadays), someone will explain he tossed away an opportunity in the NFL because he didn’t put effort into school.
It only takes a semester of moderate work to become eligible again. I think he’ll do it somewhere.

Dearest Mike,
I wish you had mentioned your interest earlier. Call me.

we all knew it was very likely David wouldn’t be around…I might have to agree with you here that he will get to some school that will make the grades happen and he’ll be playing…you never know he may have been contacted by another BCS school after seeing him burn it up last year or one of their boosters to transfer with the hopes of playing next year…any word on Jermaine Lindsey??

Well, I assume for Harvey to play anywhere else, he would have to sit out an entire season. And as we all know, idle hands and minds can get into a heap-load of trouble over the course of a year. If some other school has crept in and tried to steal him away, a la Bubba Walther and his Ohio U escapades, if I were UA, I’d STICK IT TO HIM, BUT GOOD.

As for narrowing the field for the QB position, there’s no such thing. When Turner Gill was was a sopomore at Nebraska I believe he started the season as #4 on the depth chart (although it was so long ago I may be wrong and he was listed at #3). Injuries to those in front of him got him the starting position by midseason, and the rest as they say is history.

I kinda figured Angelina would read my blog and elope with me.
Jermaine Lindsey isn’t expected to be on the team this year, either.
I seriously doubt another team tampered with Harvey. Coming out of high school, his high school coach was very blunt in saying his grades weren’t just failing; they were “terrible.”

Ah, so he’s just another lazy underachieving imbicile who got passed thru the H.S. system. Wonderful. I’d like to ask that H.S. coach how David was able to play for him with “horrible, failing” grades. And thank you so much, Coach, for allowing him to leave the 12th grade and become the Zips’ academic problem. We truly need more enablers like you to churn out more future welfare cases. Guys who pass on the fantastic opportunity given them (unjustly), simply because they can catch a ball or run fast. I’m sure tutors were available for the mental-midget at UA, but that ol’ sense of entitlement prevented him from cracking a book. Nice recruit there, J.D. Let’s check some academic records from here on out.

JD needs to be concerned about another starter on the DL line leaving. I hear someone is unhappy with JD and how he’s being treated.

Sounds like we’d better be looking ahead to predict who will actually be coaching the Zips when that gorgeous new stadium opens in two years. Ten-to-one it won’t be Brookhart, and that’s fine by me.

Jo,
Who is this upset DL? I just talked to Cecchetti last night, and it’s not him.
Chain Reaction,
At 10-to-1, I’ll bet my bank account on Brookhart.

I say Chain is blowing smoke, and I’m with you on the bet Rasor. I’ll take a 10-1 that JD is standing on the sideline in 09 and 10.

I don’t know about JD. He doesn’t seem to be a very good in-game coach; he makes very few (no?) in-game adjustments. His strength has been his recruiting ability. But, as we’ve seen over the last 3 years, most of his top recruits don’t pan out.

All I can say is he’s a starter and has 3 years to play.
