Zips offense paralyzed

Posted November 24th, 2006 by mrasor

Football

Blame the offensive line for the most disgusting loss all season.

Western Michigan beat Akron 17-0 as Luke Getsy was sacked numerous times and running back Dennis Kennedy only scurried for 18 yards on 12 carries.

The Zips never had a chance to move the ball with WMU's good defensive front charging into Akron's backfield all game.

The senior class to step up, but they refused. The defense played solid in the first half, but it became apparent they were on the field too long in the second half. Akron gave up two quick touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

In truth, the game was out of reach at 3-0.

I'll post more later.

    One single question…

Why on earth did Getsy play the whole game even though he was clearly useless ?

Because Brookhart put his personal feelings and Getsy's "final home game" ahead of what was good for the team. A blind loyalty, similar to Tressel refusing to recognize Zwick's lesser talents more quickly–and it cost OSU dearly during their sophomore season. We ALL saw that Getsy was not getting it done this year (and much of last year was smoke-and-mirrors, plus a great receiver), but the coach put ONE player ahead of everything. Glad to read Pluto's column this mornings, where coach says he needs to look at HIMSELF. A little late, now, sir.

Sami: Thank you!! And it wasn't just Getsy on Friday. The O line was generally bad…David Harvey as usual took a number of plays 'off'…what a pathetic effort on that long ball in the 3rd qtr. Dennis Kennedy wasn't exactly Brett Biggs either.

Once again, the coaches at least on the O side did not do everything they could to win the game. You are absolutely correct about playing Getsy. If he was a Jr. and it was the middle of the season, you give him a longer leash. But, as a SR. whose football career is likely over and, in the last game at home, you do EVERYTHING to try to win the game. That includes getting Jackson and whoever else in the game to give you that chance.

Brookhart complains about no 'butts' in the seats. Well, there was a decent crowd at the Bowl and saw Brookhart and his offense blow an opportunity. WMU is good, but not that good! Brookhart could have sold a few tickets for next year with a better effort.

I hope Brookhart is serious about looking at himself as well as his players. We need to remind him that other MAC coaches took over struggling programs and have better records than he does.

There are one dimensional players in football. Brookhart at this point is a one dimensional coach.

I too was upset at Carlton Jackson not receiving any playing time what-so-ever in last nights' debacle. Carlton needed to get a lot more PT not just last night, but during the course of the season as a whole. How unfortunate for CJ that he is going to be getting his first real D-1 PT at the horseshoe next year against OSU! Holy smokes! That's not fair on him, the rest of the team, or even on us fans! I have a very bad feeling about next year.
