Zips D' up Niagara, win big

Men's basketball
Akron used solid defense and spread the scoring to win 63-48 over Niagara.
Romeo Travis and Nick Dials scored 13 apiece, but the real work was done on the other end of the floor as the Purple Eagles made only four of 17 3-point attempts. What's funny is that performance actually lifted their percentage from long range.
I'll have more on the game tomorrow.
Football
I have to make an apology to all Zips fans.
I committed an error detrimental to the football program.
After Kent State's win over Akron, I said the game story should go on the front page of the Buchtelite. I suggested the headline "Fear the Flashes." I regret that, in hindsight, because tonight I found out that KSU coach Doug Martin clipped out that paper and hung it in his office.
D'oh!

I'm responding to this post rather than an older one because I want this to be seen by as many as possible.
If you watched the Western Michigan game on TV rather than at the bowl, you would have seen a head coach who had given up on his team, just as they had given up on him. As his team continually self-destructed on the field, Brookhart simply stood on the sidelines staring at his play chart and spitting tobacco juice. Every once in awhile he would mumble into his headset. He never looked angry or upset — just bewildered.
At no point after players missed assignments or comitteed ridiculous penalties did he get in their faces on the sideline. In total contrast, WMU's Cubit was all over players when they came back to the sidelines after making mistakes.

I could be wrong, but I never really thought of J.D. as a guy who would yell at his players in public.
Now, I've seen practices where he is fiery as hell. I'm sure this offseason will be quite intense. That's where the punishment will come.

Nice work, douchebag.

Big whoop, if Martin is decorating his office. Let's be honest, HIS team IS more worthy of being "feared" than the lifeless and aptly-named Zips, at least this season. Don't beat yourself up, Mike, you simply spoke the plain truth.
Is it not crystal clear that J.D. is not an offensive mind and apparently has no offensive minds on his staff? There is no creativity, no no-huddles, nothing to generate positive gains and interest the fans. Time to stop all the talk about his coaching prowess, until he shows up on gameday. One lucky win over a sucky NC State team does not a season make. He's back to ground-zero; let's see if he can buy a playbook somewhere and begin to pile up some wins.
(Oh, and thank goodness he closed those practices to the media, etc. Wouldn't want those Zip secrets to leak out!)

You Akron fanatics are priceless. Less than a year after winning a MAC Title and going to a bowl game you want to tar and feather Brookhart. Pathetic.
I cannot wait to see how people turn on Dambrot after he fails to win the MAC Tournament or the MAC East Division… Maybe you can bring back the glory days of Coleman Crawford/Dan Hipsher and Lee Owens/Gerry Faust.
No wonder coaches like Ken Lolla get the hell out of A-town as soon as they get a chance… If Brookhart was smart he would have left after last season.
Akron fans suck and Akron sucks.
