Zips may lose two ABJ beat writers

Miscellaneous

As the football and men's soccer teams assemble their rosters, one position now falls into question: beat writer.

The Akron Beacon Journal will lay off 40 of its 160 newsroom employees in the coming weeks. Cuts might include Zips football reporter David Lee Morgan and men's soccer writer Tom Reed.

The hope for many reporters, photographers and copy editors falls solely on other employees voluntarily resigning.

The cuts, made according to seniority, also took my job. As many of you know, however, I do not blog through the ABJ. This is an advertising partnership between the newspaper and the university. The university pays me, so I will continue for the foreseeable future.

  • In other media news, UA hired Bill Morgan to replace Tommy Gelehrter as the host of pregame shows and play-by-play commentator for women's basketball. He comes from WJER/101.7 Dover-New Philadelphia where he is the morning drive host.

I'm personally FRIED about these layoffs. How do you build a better paper the "Black Way?" Layoff the valued writers, of course! What kind of twisted logic is this? David and Tom are insightful, talented reporters and columnists, and Pat M. covers the Browns thoroughly.

How long will it be before subscribers throw up their hands and say, "Forget it. I've had it with this greedy mentality, whittling the once-proud ABJ to 4-page sections and a skeleton staff!!" Mr. Black, there are many other news options out there—-your employees are your greatest assets…why are you destroying it?

They should fire Terry Pluto and fat ass Brian Windhorst - they could pay three peoples salaries on what Windbag's food bill is. Morgan is crap but Reed is the best writer at the Urinal.

  3. Bob Says:

How does a newspaper expand its audience to younger readers when it lays off those who are probably best equipped to do so, namely, those with the least senority?

I can blow through the Sunday paper in about 20 minutes — it just isn't that interesting any more. Cut out about 25 percent of that content, and why continue to subscribe?

  4. David Says:

"Special to the Beacon Journal" and "From wire reports" - yeah, that makes for interesting, in-depth reading …

  5. Kiel Says:

this is at the end of that story.

"The restructured newspaper's efforts will focus on Summit County, its core market, managing editor Mizell Stewart said."

The idiots at the ABJ had better realize that Columbus is not in Summit County.

  6. Robert Says:

Exactly! The last paragraph of the story gives us hope, i.e., focussing on SUMMIT County!!! Yeah, now there's a brilliant idea… IDIOTS!!! Hopefully the ABJ's sports section will actually be an AKRON sports section now!!! Good grief! Hopefully they'll clear out all of the AKRON Beacon Journal editors and reporters who would rather be covering Cleveland athletics!!! Anyone who could actually consider the Akron Beacon Journal's sports coverage Akron sports coverage isn't familiar with the rag!
