Doubleheader today

Friday, May 19th, 2006

Baseball

Akron’s game against Miami was rained out yesterday.

They will play a doubleheader today. The first game starts at 1 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field.

Kurt Davidson still needs two homeruns to tie Mike Doerbecker’s school record of 14.

Track

Ashley Kaufman is the MAC’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the week.

Kaufman and 20 teammates will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for the NCAA regional championships next weekend.

Read them, but remember I can’t verify anything on a message board, although ZipsNation is the premier message board for Zips athletics.

Cleveland State/Zips game canceled

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Baseball

As you know, it’s pretty crummy outside.

That’s why the Zips game with Cleveland State was canceled.

First baseman Kurt Davidson, who has 12 home runs this season, now has just a three-game weekend series with Miami to break Mike Doerbecker’s school record of 14 long balls.

  • The past few days haven’t been a complete wash for Davidson, however. The College Baseball Foundation named him to its National Honor Roll this week. The foundation gave the award to 39 players based on on-the-field performance.

Women’s basketball

New Waddell named

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

Miscellaneous

I have a new boss.

Mack Rhoades announced today what a lot of us have known for a couple weeks: Hunter Yurachek will come from Virginia to be new senior associate athletics director for external relations.

He takes over for Mike Waddell, who took a similar position with the team Akron will beat on Oct. 7 — Cincinnati.

Baseball

When you give up eight unearned runs, you shouldn’t win.

And Akron (15-33) didn’t today against West Virginia (34-18).

The Mountaineers beat the Zips, 10-6. Scott Gunn hit a three-run home run for Akron. Kurt Davidson, who is two homers away from the school record, went hitless.

Davidson has four more games in which to catch Mike Doerbecker for the school home run record of 14. The Zips play at Cleveland State tomorrow, then Miami comes to town for a three-game weekend series to conclude the season.

  • The team will honor former head coach Dave Fross on Saturday. Under Fross, the Zips won the 1996 MAC Tournament. It has been Akron’s only MAC baseball championship.

Three Zips on All-MAC Preseason team

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Football

The Sporting News named three Zips seniors — Luke Getsy, Kiki Gonzalez and Reggie Corner — to its All-MAC Preseason Team.

Akron, ranked the No. 46 team in the country, will win the MAC East again, The Sporting News says. The magazine picked Northern Illinois (32 overall) to win the MAC West and the entire conference.

Getsy is also The Sporting News’ No. 10 quarterback in the nation.

  • Our friends at MACReportOnline.com also named its first and second teams. Getsy and Jermaine Reid made the first team. Gonzalez, Corner, Jabari Arthur, Kris Kasparek, Andy Alleman and Brion Stokes made the second squad.

Baseball

Hitting two grand slams in a week ought to get you something, even if your team is nothing special.

The MAC agreed and gave Zips first baseman Kurt Davidson its Player of the Week award. It is his third such honor of the season.

Davidson hit .545 last week with 11 RBIs.

The season is basically over, but here is something to watch: With 12 home runs, Davidson is two away from the school season record of 14, held by Mike Doerbecker. Akron has five games remaining on the schedule for Davidson to mash/rake* for the record.

Mitchell: We didn’t want a letdown

Triple_crown

Track

As you can see in the above image, coach Dennis Mitchell stressed winning the MAC Triple Crown — a feat no women’s team had ever accomplished.

His leadership won him the conference coach of the year award.

In the weeks leading up to the MAC Championship, however, he had to be a little worried. Last year, his team was in the same position and the women came in second to Kent State.

"Our girls did not want to repeat what happened last year when we were supposed to dominate but slipped and lost," Mitchell said. "It was a big motivation to us to not let our guard down in any way and not take anything for granted."

Despite all of the preparation, the women did slip in some events. Senior Amy Lavalley fouled out in the hammer event. But Stevi Large and Jenna Strouse picked up their teammate by finishing one-two in that event.

A simliar event happened in another case, Mitchell said. The important thing was that the team focused on every event to prevent a repeat of last year.

Although it has gone under the radar so far, the men finished higher than they ever have in the MAC Outdoor Championships. They didn’t get all the points Mitchell expected to win on Saturday, but still the coach was happy with the results.

"Our guys competed tough," Mitchell said. "It was great beating Kent and earning our highest team finish ever."

Mitchell said he was especially impressed by four of his seniors…

  • Beata Rudzinska won the 800-meter run, which completed a four-year undefeated streak in that events, both indoor and outdoor. She has an INCREDIBLE 13 total MAC titles. Wow.
  • Ashley Kaufman broke the javelin meet record, which was formerly held by the current American record holder. She was MAC Female Field Athlete of the Meet.
  • John Russell broke the meet record in the pole vault, despite the rain. He was MAC Male Field Athlete of the Meet.
  • Tomasz Smialek won his sixth MAC high jump title, four coming indoors and two outdoors. It was raining and weather had just delayed the event for an hour. Smialek needed to clear his final bar in order to win, and he did.

Akron will take 21 athletes to Knoxville, Tenn., for the NCAA Regional Meet in two weeks.

Baseball

Akron built a 9-4 lead against Kent State before God stopped play.

After two big offensive innings for the Zips, the rain came in the top of the third. Umpires eventually called the game.

In the end, it probably won’t matter. The Zips are too far back to be in contention to make the MAC Tournament. But I think this series gives the team something to build on. Akron nearly won two of three against the rival Flashes, who have been a superior team for quite some time.

Expect a better team in coach Pat Bangston’s second year.

2007 recruiting … already??

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

Football

It seems like I just got done reporting on the recruiting craze of 2006. Well, here are some nuggets of what might be coming next winter…

  • Akron has offered Valley, Pa., receiver Toney Clemons a scholarship, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says. Ohio State and Michigan are also on his list, Rivals.com says. Clemons is 6-foot-2 and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.
  • The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says coach J.D. Brookhart also has made an offer to receiver Tim Cortazzo, who runs a 4.39 in the 40, but is only 6-feet tall. Rivals.com says Cortazzo has interest in many schools in the region.
  • The Tribune-Review also mentions quarterback Cody Catalina and offensive lineman Donny Barclay as Akron scholarship offers. Catalina, who is 6-4 and 205 pounds, has interest in many BCS schools. So does Barclay, who is 6-4 and 283.
  • According to the Beaver County Times, Akron has also offered Derek Moye, an athlete from Rochester, Pa. Judging by his schools-of-interest list on Rivals.com, Moye wants to go to a BCS school.
  • The Zips are also interested in Moye’s teammate, Ryan Zarnich, a 6-4, 220-pound tight end. He also has interest in Pittsburgh and West Virginia, Rivals.com says.
  • Those three schools are looking at Tariq Taylor from Aliquippa, Pa. Taylor is a 6-3 linebacker.
  • Lastly, (but certainly not least) is Zac Kasparek, brother of Zips tight end Kris. Many BCS schools would love to sign the younger Kasparek, who is a 6-5, 295-pound lineman from New Brighton, Pa. (Kris, if you are reading this, please do some serious campaigning to get your brother in Blue and Gold.)

Women’s basketball

Canton Hoover girls’ basketball coach Paul Wackerly could latch on as an assistant with Jodi Kest, the Canton Repository says.

One stumbling block: Wackerly doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree.

ZIPS CAPTURE TRIPLE CROWN

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Track

The Akron women broke away from the rest of the field Saturday to win the MAC Outdoor Track Championship, completing their quest for conference titles in all three running sports.

The women won cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter and today they won outdoor track, becoming the first women’s team in MAC history to win the Triple Crown.

With 134.5 points, the men moved from up in the standings to third, finishing behind Central Michigan (176.5) and Eastern Michigan (159.5).

Although Kent State trailed the Zips by only a few points after Day Two, the Flashes finished in third. Akron scored 141 points. Second-place Eastern Michigan was 38 points behind, with 103.

The season-long accomplishments won coach Dennis Mitchell the MAC Outdoor Coach of the Year award. I will have some comments from him a little later.

Here are some highlights…

  • Beata Rudzinska and Emily Freudenrich finished one-two in the 800-meter. That brought Akron 18 points.
  • Deanna Caldwell-Edwards and Corine Gavin-Hall combined for 25 points in the 100- and 200-meter events.
  • Natalie Sako won the high jump conference title.
  • Liz Mangen took first in the discus.
  • John Russell won the pole vault by nearly six inches.
  • Tomasz Smialek won his sixth MAC high jump title.
  • By going one-two in the men’s discus, Auston Papay and Randall Hafner brought the team 18 points.

The women’s accomplishments this season are quite significant. Here is how I rank Akron teams’ seasons — in regards to success, not so much about success relative to the past or popularity of the sport.

  1. Men’s soccer - Elite Eight, No. 1 national ranking
  2. Women’s track/cross country - First ever Triple Crown in MAC
  3. Football - School’s first Division I bowl game
  4. Men’s basketball - School’s first Divison I postseason win
  5. Golf -  School’s first tournament win in nine years
  6. Softball - Beat several good teams, school’s first berth in MAC Tournament in four years
  7. Rifle - Won Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference title

Feel free to post your variations on that list in my comments section.

Anyhow, back to track. Several Akron athletes have qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships. Those will be held in Knoxville, Tenn., in two weeks.

Zips take game two at Kent State

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Baseball

Kurt Davidson’s grand slam was the major blow for Akron as the Zips beat Kent State in game two of today’s doubleheader, 8-6.

Akron improved its conference record to 8-15, and it would take a miracle for the Zips to make the MAC Tournament.

Baseball standout to play QB for Zips

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Football

A moderator on ZipsNation.org posted this story about Ryan Flynn, an excellent defensive and offensive second baseman at Allegany College in Maryland.

He will transfer to Akron because he wants to play football.

Rivals.com gave him one star when he came out of high school in 2004. Despite that, West Virginia and Penn State wanted him. He holds many quarterback records at Latrobe High School.

Baseball

Akron lost game one of its doubleheader with Kent State this afternoon, 5-1.

Game two started at 3 p.m.

Women still strong, men improve

Friday, May 12th, 2006

Track

The Zips are one day closer to taking the MAC’s first-ever women’s Triple Crown — winning conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

But it appears their rivals will make them earn it.

The Zips women hold a thin lead over Kent State after day two of the MAC Outdoor Track Championships. Akron’s men improved a spot from fifth to fourth.

Here are the women’s top five…

  1. Akron, 49 points
  2. Kent State, 46.5
  3. Ball State, 31
  4. Miami, 31
  5. Ohio, 25

Here are the men…

  1. Kent State, 72
  2. Miami, 51
  3. Eastern Michigan, 51
  4. Akron, 34
  5. Central Michigan, 30

And here are some Zips highlights…

  • On the women’s side, eight of Akron’s 11 semifinal entries reached tomorrow’s final events. That leads me to believe the Zips have a good chance at improving their lead over the Flashes. Finalists include Deanna Caldwell-Edwards (two events), Corine Gavin-Hall (two events), Beata Rudzinska, Emily Freudenrich, Siobahn Counts and Brittany Hocker.
  • Of the four women’s events scored today, Jenna Strouse took fifth in the shot put. Morgan Sulzener and Becki Michael took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
  • Akron men scored in three events today. Weston Lott and Nick Continenza took third and eighth, respectively, in the decathlon. Auston Papay won third in the shot put. Cadeau Kelley finished fourth in the long jump.
  • Three male athletes advanced to the finals after strong performances today. Howard Harris will compete in both the 100 and 200. A.J. Oyer and Mike Meditz will each take a shot at tomorrow’s finals in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. So it appears the men’s standings could improve at bit as well.

Baseball

Since bad weather delayed the Akron-Kent State baseball game today, the teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.

Game one will begin at noon.

These are basically must-win games if Akron wants to make the six-team MAC Tournament.
