Miscellaneous

I have a new boss.

Mack Rhoades announced today what a lot of us have known for a couple weeks: Hunter Yurachek will come from Virginia to be new senior associate athletics director for external relations.

He takes over for Mike Waddell, who took a similar position with the team Akron will beat on Oct. 7 — Cincinnati.

Baseball

When you give up eight unearned runs, you shouldn't win.

And Akron (15-33) didn't today against West Virginia (34-18).

The Mountaineers beat the Zips, 10-6. Scott Gunn hit a three-run home run for Akron. Kurt Davidson, who is two homers away from the school record, went hitless.

Davidson has four more games in which to catch Mike Doerbecker for the school home run record of 14. The Zips play at Cleveland State tomorrow, then Miami comes to town for a three-game weekend series to conclude the season.

  • The team will honor former head coach Dave Fross on Saturday. Under Fross, the Zips won the 1996 MAC Tournament. It has been Akron's only MAC baseball championship.
