Three Zips on All-MAC Preseason team

Posted May 15th, 2006 by mrasor

Football

The Sporting News named three Zips seniors — Luke Getsy, Kiki Gonzalez and Reggie Corner — to its All-MAC Preseason Team.

Akron, ranked the No. 46 team in the country, will win the MAC East again, The Sporting News says. The magazine picked Northern Illinois (32 overall) to win the MAC West and the entire conference.

Getsy is also The Sporting News' No. 10 quarterback in the nation.

  • Our friends at MACReportOnline.com also named its first and second teams. Getsy and Jermaine Reid made the first team. Gonzalez, Corner, Jabari Arthur, Kris Kasparek, Andy Alleman and Brion Stokes made the second squad.

Baseball

Hitting two grand slams in a week ought to get you something, even if your team is nothing special.

The MAC agreed and gave Zips first baseman Kurt Davidson its Player of the Week award. It is his third such honor of the season.

Davidson hit .545 last week with 11 RBIs.

The season is basically over, but here is something to watch: With 12 home runs, Davidson is two away from the school season record of 14, held by Mike Doerbecker. Akron has five games remaining on the schedule for Davidson to mash/rake* for the record.

* This awful baseball cliche is brought to you by Buchtelite sports editor Dan Kadar, who despises both of these verbs.

I remember Mike Doerbecker. He was a hell of a player. Course the whole team in 96 was amazing. Doerbecker, Brain Petrucci, Dave Yoder. I think those three were joined by Todd Maynard and Jay Bartos on the all MAC team. I think Petrucci is still in the pros somewhere. Last I heard he was with the Brewers, but that was a couple years ago.

Mike Doerbecker was a hell of a player in '96. With him, Brian Petrucci and Dave Yoder, they had a lineup that competed with anyone in the country. I think Petrucci is still in the minors. Last I heard it was with the Brewers, but that was a couple of years ago.
