Men's basketball
Akron beat Ohio today, 76-61. With the win, the Zips grabbed their 20th game and clinched a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament. The contest was a little closer than the final score, but the game never really was in doubt.
Romeo Travis, Nick Dials, Dru Joyce, Rob Preston and Cedrick Middleton each scored more than 10. However, Nate Linhart's dunk in transition late in the second half was the play of the game.
Travis' 12 rebounds make him my player of the game. For the first time this year, it appeared Akron had a go-to player in the post. Middleton also played at a level I haven't seen from him this season.
Leon Williams (14 points, seven rebounds) and Mychal Green (18 points, three steals) played solid for the Bobcats.

I sat in the AK-Rowdies. I must say I was impressed. It definitely is the best place to watch a game if you are a student.
As anyone at the game will tell you, OU's fans are awful. At halftime, a bunch of female students leaned over the student section to let us know Akron sucks. Mind you, the Zips led by nine at this point. It doesn't matter to OU fans. They act like Ohio State fans, but they are missing the victories.
Swimming and diving
Danielle Beland won the 100 butterfly event yesterday. As a team, Akron finished seventh out of eight teams. The finals are tonight.
Track
As announced during the basketball game, the women's team won another MAC Championship today. Beata Rudzinska was the Zips only individual champion, winning the 800 meter event.
The men placed fourth out of six teams. A.J. Oyer, Tomasz Smialek and John Russell each won their individual events.
Coach Dennis Mitchell won Coach of the Year honors for the second-straight year. Mitchell is one of the university's best coaches, and I'm not just saying that because he reads this blog.

Hmmm, I see that OU's resident idiot, "linkhot," is strangely silent after that complete butt-kicking today. How sweet it was, and would've been an even bigger blowout if a few of those missed layups had fallen.
Hey "linkhot," if you're gonna talk smack, make sure your lame team can back up your trash.
I'd better run now…since you're probably busy fielding more "job offers" from UA. What a joke you are.

Rasor, I don't know how you can say OU fans suck, when at least 500 of the crowd yesterday were OU fans. There was green throughout the arena. How many Akron fans, or any other MAC fans, show up in large numbers to opposing arenas?
Besides Kent/Akron games and Toledo/Bowling Green games, I'd say not many.
I was on the opposite side of the arena from the OU fans you were referencing, and you could hear some of their chants, and they were just as good as the ones "A-K rowdies were doing"
When Romeo was shooting FT's you could clearly hear "Lebron's got new Friends" chant, as well as when Dru Joyce was shooting FTs "ET phone home" (he looks like ET).
Even if you hate OU, which you have insuated a few times, I'd think there would have to be some credit give to the amount of fans that showed up throughout the JAR, and that a group could be organized enough that you could hear them throughout the JAR.
Good game by the Zips, should be interesting in Cleveland. Is this the year the Zips finally win a MAC game in Q/Gund…

Sorry guys, just been busy. Yes, you were the better team yesterday and I congratulate you. Dambrot is clearly a better coach than O'Shea. Not that I like Dambrot, given past baggage, but he's doing a stellar job at Akron.

Guys, not fair to judge all OU fans on those who come to Akron, just as it's not fair of us to have judged UofA on the behavior of Mrs. Hipsher. Right?
