Walsh Jesuit can finally compete for a league championship in every sport.

The high school, which was founded in 1965, joined the North Coast League for this school year and will take part in the Blue Division against rival Archbishop Hoban.

Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Mentor Lake Catholic and Parma Padua are other co-ed schools in the NCL Blue Division. Cleveland Benedictine participates as an all boys school and Cleveland Heights Beaumont is a member as an all girls school.

“As far as opponents and so forth, there is really no change for us on our schedule because we generally schedule the other schools in our division,” Walsh Jesuit football coach Gerry Rardin said. “Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin is the only one we didn’t play last year that is now in our division, but we have played them in past years.”

Rardin said this will be the first school year that each Warriors team can play for a league championship.

“I am looking forward to the additional thing that a league race could bring,” Rardin said. “Whatever team wins the North Coast League football championship is a pretty good team and is going to make the state playoffs. I would assume. I cannot see a league champion from this league not make it. Making the state playoffs is the No. 1 goal for sure.

“We are new to it. The kids aren’t talking a lot about it, but I think they will get more excited about as we get closer to it.”

Rardin said the Walsh football team competed in the Inter-County Conference in the early 1980s with Canton Central Catholic, St. Vincent-St. Mary and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Warriors baseball coach Chris Kaczmar helped form the Cuyahoga River Baseball Conference in the late 1990s. The CRBC currently includes Walsh, St. V-M, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Lakewood St. Edward, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy and Hunting Valley University School.

“I think everyone is approaching the North Coast League with an open mind and I think in the long run everyone will really like it,” Rardin said.

The NCL White Division features Cleveland Central Catholic, Parma Heights Holy Name, Warren John F. Kennedy, Bedford St. Peter Chanel, Garfield Heights Trinity and Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

In other league news, Nordonia is a full member of the Suburban League this year. Barberton and Northwest are independent schools.

The Walsh Jesuit girls soccer team received a trophy and a banner from ESPN Rise on Tuesday night at the team’s season-ending banquet at Emidio & Sons Banquet Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

Walsh finished first in the ESPN Rise FAB 50 poll, the third time the Warriors have won a national championship in girls soccer. The 2010 team joins the 2000 and 2006 teams that won state and national titles. Walsh’s 2001 and 2004 teams also won state titles.

Walsh won the Division I state title in November with a 3-0 victory over Pickerington North, completing a 19-1-3 season.

“It was a very special evening,” Walsh coach Dino McIntyre said. “It was nice a closure to everything for this season.”

The Warriors starters were seniors Kelsey Smigel, Erin Flynn, Alexis Gable, Brianna Kanz and Elizabeth Bollinger, juniors Katie George, Kaylee Semelsberger, Alyson Smigel and Christen Westphal, sophomore Sandra Yu and freshman Maddy Anzelc.

McIntyre said the girls each received an engraved medal and t-shirts from ESPN Rise. The evening included several photo opportunities and joyous conversations.

“We had all of our girls, parents, families and coaches in attendance,” McIntyre said. “ESPN Rise gave us this huge banner with our school colors and also a plaque commemorating our third national championship.

“The trophy, it looks like one of those BCS type of trophies [you see in college football].”

Walsh outscored its final 15 opponents by a 63-1 margin, including 30-0 in seven tournament games. Strongsville (20-2-1), which lost to Walsh in the state semifinals, finished fifth in the ESPN Rise poll. Jackson (15-2-2) was No. 31 and Medina (13-3-3) was No. 34.

ESPN Rise also named Yu, Medina senior goalkeeper Taylor Burke and Strongsville junior midfielder-striker Ashley Meier to their 50-player All-America team.

Stow senior Vickie Havas will continue her academic and soccer careers at Northern Arizona University next season.

Havas is a four-year starter for the Bulldogs at forward and is currently leading her team in goals for the fourth consecutive season.

“Vickie is obviously one of the best female soccer players in the state of Ohio,” Stow coach Chris Tipton said. “For her to come through Stow and for me to be a part of her progression leading into her collegiate career is awesome. I am honored to be her coach. She is not only a great soccer player, but she is a wonderful person too.”

Tipton said Havas currently has 78 goals and 29 assists in her high school career. She has helped Stow post a 45-13-10 overall record and a 27-3-8 mark at home.

Havas netted nine goals as a freshman, 28 as a sophomore and 28 as a junior. She has 13 goals this season for Stow, which has an 8-2-2 record.

Havas, who has a 3.6 cumulative grade point average, said she plans to study in nursing at the school, which is located in Flagstaff.

“I went out there for a camp last year before my junior season,” Havas said. “Going out there, I did not know what to expect. I thought it might be in the dessert because it is in Arizona, but I really like it. It is up in the mountains. It is really beautiful. It is not in the dessert, it has similar weather to Ohio and I liked that.”

Havas said she also strongly considered Cleveland State and Bowling Green.

Havas said she has family connections to Arizona, with a grandma, aunt, uncle and cousins all living in the Tucson area. She said her parents plan on moving from Stow to Tucson.
