Perry and North Canton Hoover finished Nos. 5 and 6 in the season’s final Division I state softball coaches’ poll, respectively.

Perry earned 56 points, while Hoover had 53 points.

In Division II, Walsh Jesuit is ranked No. 10.

In Division III, Norwayne is No. 5. In Division IV, Mogadore is ranked No. 10.

Wadsworth and Massillon Perry are tied for the No. 2 ranking in the weekly Division I state wrestling coaches’ poll. The Grizzlies earned four first-place votes. Lakewood St. Edward is ranked No. 1.

In Division II, Walsh Jesuit is ranked No. 3.

In Division III, CVCA is ranked No. 3 with one first-place vote. Waynedale is ranked No. 8.

Massillon Perry is ranked No. 3 in the Division I state wrestling coaches’ poll this week. Perry is the only area team ranked in the top 10. Lakewood St. Edward is ranked No. 1.

In Division II, Walsh Jesuit is ranked No. 3. Minerva is ranked No. 10.

In Division III, CVCA is ranked No. 3. Waynedale is ranked No. 8.

Division I, Region II

Massillon, Twinsburg and Canton McKinley currently have a hold on the playoffs with two games left to go.

Medina and Perry sit just outside at numbers nine and 10 respectively.

Division II, Region V

Copley, Tallmadge and Kent Roosevelt have spots in the top eight slots with a showdown between Copley and Tallmadge looming Friday at Copley.

Walsh Jesuit is on the outside looking in at the ninth spot as of right now.

Division II, Region VII

Lake currently has a hold on the No. 4 position for the playoffs, but controls their own destiny.

Division III, Region IX

Field (6-2) faces 6-2 Ravenna this Friday in a big match up for computer points.

Buchtel’s situation is simple:  they have a big game against 7-1 Toledo Central Catholic coming up this Friday.  Beat them and there is a substantial amount of computer points to be won. 

St. Vincent-St. Mary remains in line for the playoffs at the No. 6 spot, but you have to suspect that they must win out against University School and Youngstown Ursuline to remain in their current position.

Division IV, Region 13

Undefeated Manchester currently has a lock on a playoff spot. Canton Central Catholic, currently at No. 10 has a shot of getting in.

Division VI, Region 21

According to this post, Mogadore has already clinched a first round playoff home game. They sit atop computer rankings in this region.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its first set of computer rankings for post-season play Tuesday.  Here’s how things look so far for area teams:

Perry (4-0), Medina (4-0) and Twinsburg (4-0) occupy the top three spots respectively.  Massillon (3-1) comes in at No. 8.

Div. II, Reg. 5

Copley (4-0) and Tallmadge (4-0) come in at the first and fourth spots.  Kent Roosevelt (3-1) come in at No. 5.

St. Vincent-St. Mary (3-1), Field (3-1) and Buchtel (2-2), occupy numbers three, four and six, respectively.

Div. IV, Reg. 13

Orrville (4-0) is at No. 3.

Div. VI, Reg. 21

Mogadore (4-0) is ranked sixth.

Perry won the Division I state softball title with a 10-0 victory in six innings over Grove City on Saturday at Firestone Stadium.

The Panthers (27-3) were unranked in the final state coaches’ poll and the Greyhounds (28-5) finished first.

How Perry won the Division I state championship

Perry senior first baseman Maria Tayse hit a two-run home run in the sixth to end the game early on the mercy rule.

Panthers junior right-handed pitcher Casi Rohr moved her record to 24-2 by shutting out the Greyhounds on six hits, walking none and striking out seven. That came after she tossed a three-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Holland Springfield 5-0 Thursday in the semifinals.

Grove City ace pitcher Paige Myers, a Miami University recruit and four-year starter, took the loss.

Senior shortstop Anna Fach and sophomore third baseman Shelbi Tilton led off the first inning with singles for Perry. After Myers struck out the next two hitters, senior catcher Caitlyn Ferrell hit a sharp single to center.

The throw home might have been in time to nab Fach, but the Grove City catcher couldn’t handle it. The ball went to the backstop and Tilton scored to make it 2-0. Two pitches later, Ferrell scored on a passed ball.

In the second inning, a walk and singles by Fach and Tilton moved the score to 4-0.

Perry put together a four-run fifth, keyed by a two-run single by senior outfielder Sarah Samblanet and a two-run Greyhounds error.

Note

– The Federal League has claimed four Division I state championships in the past six years. Besides Perry, the other recent champions were North Canton Hoover (2006 and 2008) and Lake (2005).

The Division I state semifinal softball game between Grove City and Liberty Township Lakota East at Firestone Stadium has been postyponed. Officials are trying to remove excess water from the infield after a heavy shower hit around 6 p.m. and lasted 20 minutes, but the teams were never able to take the field.

The game has been moved to 10 a.m. Friday at Firestone Stadium.

The winner plays Perry (26-3) 1 p.m. Saturday for the state championship.
