Massillon junior quarterback Kyle Kempt reportedly took an unofficial visit to Notre Dame this past weekend for the Notre Dame vs. University of Southern California football game, according to ESPN.com.

“It was a crazy, great weekend that’s for sure, just being able to be a part of something like that,” Kempt was quoted as saying by ESPN.com. “… It was nuts. Guys from the West Coast, East Coast, South and North, even being mentioned in the same name as all those people is really a testament to all the hard work every single person in that room has done.”

Kempt, who is 6 feet 5 and 195 pounds, has offers that reportedly include Tennessee, West Virginia, Toledo and Bowling Green, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

Outlook:  Buchtel High School has to figure out how to replace 25 seniors from last year, including quarterbacks and wide receivers.  Look for a couple of interesting moves on Buchtel’s side of the ball, including Powers moving Jarrod Wilson to the QB spot.

Is it too early in the football season for a gamesmanship?

The Buchtel Griffins are scheduled to kick-off the season against the Massillon Tigers Thursday night at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, but coach Ricky Powers and his staff have little idea what they’ll be facing when the teams play.

Powers, by his reckoning made seven requests to Tiger coach Jason Hall to trade film with Massillon and he received no reply.  His defensive coordinator, Kemp Boyd, also made multiple requests to Hall, Powers said. Powers appealed to the Tigers’ assistand athletic director – Hall is the school’s top athletic administrator – to speak with Hall but still received no reply.

Hall finally sent Powers the following text message:  “We have decided not to exchange film.  We couldn’t get anything off last years (sic) film due to the poor quality,” he wrote. “We scouted the scrimmages and we are good.  Thanks.”

The excuse for not returning at least seven phone calls from Powers himself?  Hall left his phone at home, he said in another text.

There’s a gentleman’s agreement that teams exchange film in high school football and it’s normally done the weekend prior to a game.

An informal survey of a group of footbal coaches in the area said that the way Hall handled this was shady at best and dishonest at worst.  Efforts to reach Hall via phone and email proved unsuccessful.

Buchtel dominated the Tigers in last year’s season opener 29-13.

- Streetsboro lineman Alex Todd verbally committed to Indiana, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. Todd, who is 6 feet 4 and 290 pounds, is the first Indiana commitment in the 2012 class, according to the publication. He also reportedly had offers from Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green and Kent State.

- Orrville middle linebacker Mason Monheim has reportedly added an offer from Ohio University, according to ScoutingOhio.com. Monheim, 6 feet 1 and 215 pounds, also has offers that include Illinois, Miami (Ohio), Kent State, Akron, Toledo, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo.

- Walsh Jesuit quarterback Nick Wargo has reportedly been offered by Cincinnati, according to Scout.com. It is the first offer for Wargo, who is listed at 6 feet 3 and 215 pounds on ScoutingOhio.com. He will be a senior this upcoming season.

Massillon wide receiver Justin Olack will sign a national letter of intent with the University of Toledo Wednesday, Tigers coach Jason Hall said Monday.

Olack, 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, had orally committed to the University of Pittsburgh. But the firing of coach Dave Wannstedt and the short-lived tenure of his successor, Mike Haywood, who was arrested on domestic violence charges, prompted the converted quarterback to reconsider. Eventually Pitt hired Todd Graham as its coach.

“He visited Toledo and Pitt again,” Hall said. “He decided he really enjoyed the education, the social and the football piece of Toledo. It’s a place he could be for five years if he had to be.

“I kept saying, ‘At the end of the day, if you had to get in the car and drive right now, where would you go? What’s your gut?’ ”

Hall said Olack will get just as much exposure in the Mid-American Conference as he would playing for Pitt in Big East. The MAC has 15 players on the rosters of the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers, who will square off in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Olack will be reunited with former Massillon offensive lineman Jeff Myers, a redshirt freshman in Toledo coach Tim Beckman’s program.

Massillon senior wide receiver Justin Olack told the Sporting News that he was surprised to learn of Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt’s resignation on Tuesday.

“I’ve talked to some of other commits and they’re the same, stunned,” Olack told the publication. “He was a great guy and he was one of the main reasons I committed to Pitt.”

Olack, who is verbally committed to Pitt, is one of Ohio’s top players in the 2011 class. Wannstedt announced Tuesday that he resigned from the head coaching position after going 42-31 in six seasons.
