Gulley commits to Syracuse

by Beacon Sports on December 3, 2009

in Football,Garfield,Uncategorized

Garfield senior RB Tyson Gulley orally committed to Syracuse on Wednesday night, according to Garfield coach Bob Sax.

Gulley also had several offers from Mid-American Conference schools. He had scheduled an official visit to Central Michigan Dec. 12, but made the commitment to Syracuse on Wednesday night.

Gulley, who is 5-9 and 175 pounds, was an all-Beacon Journal selection this season.

“I think it is a good fit,” Sax said in an e-mail. “Most schools are interested in the type of player he is since most are running the spread. He can run the ball and catch it from the flanker spot. I’m sure they will use him to return punts and kicksoffs as well. He is multi-dimensional and that is what makes him such a great player.”

He rushed 167 times for 952 yards and 14 touchdowns. Completed 8-of-18 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Had four receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown. Had 51 tackles, caused one fumble, had four interceptions and blocked a field goal. He also was the City Series Offensive Player of the Year.

People can say what they want about City Series Football, but the fact remains Akron still has major talent, particularly at Garfield. Must I throw out some names, most recently Tyson Gulley (Syracuse), Chris Beanie Wells (Ohio State-Arizona Cardinals), Eli Ward (University of Minnesota), Thomas LT Lewis (Indiana University-New York Giants), Antoine Winfield (Ohio State-Buffalo Bills-Minnesota Vikings), Charles Gladman (University of Pittsburgh), Dave Brown-(retired NFL veteran), and Larry Poole (also retired NFL veteran). That is not to mention numerous players who have played at Mac Schools, or smaller colleges.

I agree. Don’t forget Eugene Lewis Class of 93. That went on to win a ChampionShip with Jim Tressel at Youngstown State as a DB. He is now a Defensive Coordinator at Buffalo State.

…and Jim Lash, Vikings.

Don’t forget Steve Craig

how easily folks forget. dave young (purdue, new york giants), doug marsh (michigan, st. louis cardinals). not all the talent came from garfield. i will agree that akron has a plethora of talented athletes, but from ALL high schools in the city.
