Hey everyone! This is my column that’s running in the Akron Beacon Journal Friday, but it’s posted on Ohio.com now, as you can see. Thanks to everyone who submitted votes for their favorite high school nicknames. If there are other crazy nicknames from out of state, post them so we can all get some laughs. Thanks again!

Some of the best are/were in your own backyard, how much more politically incorrect in this day and age can you get than when the Orientals face off against the Orangemen. I always thought the old “Big Blue” should have been The Rebels or The Confederates ( I could take that one further but Ara Parseghian or Big John Mullin may come after me), then you’d have the politically incorrect trifecta.
Enjoyed your article. Fun trivia subject. However, disappointed that my alma mater, Charles F Brush (So Euclid/Lyndhurst) didn’t get a nod in the top 25. “ARCS”, Arc light invented by CF Brush, is quite a unique nickname. That, plus the fact that arc lights were used to light Friday night football games for many years. Possibly “ARCS” made the “also mentioned” list.
Unfortunately, my high closed in 1972, but the lab school affiliated with Kent State University, Kent State University Research and Development Center, aka Kent State High, had a great nickname: the Statesmen. Our mascot was Uncle Sam. Sorry I didn’t weigh in sooner but I just found your blog.
