Garfield prepares for East

Garfield football coach Bob Sax believes his team hasn’t put together a complete game this season. The Rams (2-3) are coming off a loss to Massillon last week. Garfield plays East (0-5) at noon Saturday at Buchtel.

Sax said despite East’s record, the team has playmakers on the field.

“We need to be fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball and on special teams,” Sax said in an e-mail. “We have yet to play four quarters of football this season.”

The Rams rushed for 313 yards against Massillon last week and Sax said he thought the offensive line played well. However, the Rams had trouble in the red zone on offense. Defensively, Garfield has had trouble defending the pass and also stopping opponents on third down.

“After the game, I told the team it is now down to defending our league title, going 7-3 and hoping that will give us enough points to make the playoffs.”

Garfield senior Tyson Gulley, who has offers from several Division I college programs, has been a consistent player for the Rams this season. He is 3 of 8 passing for 70 yards and a touchdown. He has had 91 carries for 590 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also had two receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Gulley has 33 tackles, three interceptions, one broken-up pass, one blocked field goal for a 58-yard touchdown and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.
