Garfield football update

The Garfield football team will move from Division I to Division II starting this fall for the next two seasons under OHSAA guidelines. The divisional breakdowns are based on enrollment figures provided by the state.

Baldwin could make decision soon

Solon junior DE Darryl Baldwin (6-6, 250) could make his college decision by mid-July or sooner, according to Solon coach Jim McQuaide.

Tuslaw QB commits to Mount Union

May 26, 2009

Tuslaw senior QB Shelby Combs has committed to play football at Mount Union.
Combs, who is 5-10 and 190 pounds, was second-team all-state. He rushed for 1,150 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. He also threw for 630 yards and six touchdowns in 2008.

Kent State offers junior DT

Hamilton junior DT Darius Gilbert (6-2, 260) has reportedly been offered by Kent State, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Hamilton is a Division I program north of Cincinnati. It plays in the Greater Miami Conference.
Gilbert had 8.5 sacks and a fumble recovery in 2008. He also has offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Toledo and Ohio.

Traci Vandegrift selected for USA Volleyball event

Field High School senior Traci Vandegrift has been selected to play on the 2009 USA Volleyball Women’s Junior National A2 Volleyball Team.

WRA boys lacrosse team wins Midwest title

May 21, 2009

The host Western Reserve Academy boys lacrosse team recently won the “A” bracket championship at the Midwest Lacrosse Coaches Association Tournament.
The Pioneers defeated Worthington Kilbourne 12-9 in the championship game May 16 after posting an 8-7 win over Upper Arlington May 15.
Teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana competed in the event.

Kent Roosevelt senior commits

Kent Roosevelt senior Tyler Lohr has signed to play football and baseball at Baldwin-Wallace.
 
Lohr was a first-team all-Portage Trail Conference selection during football season last fall. He was also second-team all-district.
 
Lohr is a four-year letterwinner for the Kent Roosevelt baseball team.

Kent State has offered a scholarship to Cincinnati Elder junior OLB Corey Mason (6-3, 210), the Cincinnati Enquirer reports this morning.
Mason also has an offer from Eastern Illinois. He had three sacks, one interception and a fumble recovery last season.
