GlenOak softball player commits to Cleveland State

Hard-hitting GlenOak High School junior shortstop Brittani Newsome made an oral commitment Monday night to play softball for Cleveland State University.

Newsome, who also was recruited by the University of Akron and Middle Tennessee State, is a three-year starter for GlenOak coach Fred Mertes.

‘‘I love the coaches there, the players were great and it seemed so family-oriented on our visits,’’ Newsome said. ‘‘There also was so much to do up there [in Cleveland] that it kind of reminded me of home.

‘‘It really seems like the best fit for me in many respects, especially since it’s close enough for my family to come and see me play often.’’

Newsome was an All-Federal League honoree her first two years in high school softball. She hit .398 with two home runs as a sophomore and .358 as a freshman.

Newsome cannot sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent until the early signing period in November.
