Firestone grad up for Amateur Athlete of the Year Award

The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission announced its candidates for the 2008 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards Monday.

Ohio State athletes J Jaggers (wrestling), Chris “Beanie” Wells (football) and Alex Boone (football) have been nominated for the Collegiate Athlete of the Year Award.

Cavaliers forward LeBron James, Indians pitcher Cliff Lee and PGA golfer Ben Curtis are nominated for the Professional Athlete of the Year Award.

Firestone graduate Mark Gangloff is one of three finalists for the Amateur Athlete of the Year Award.

Other wards include High School Athlete of the Year, Cleveland Clinic Courage Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be given to Cleveland St. Ignatius football coach Chuck Kyle.

The event will be held Wednesday, January 21at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Tables for the event range from $7,500 (platinum) to $2,500 for silver. Individual tickets can be purchased for $250.
