Walsh Jesuit junior Tyler Skulina, 17, has made an oral commitment to continue his academic and baseball careers at the University of Virginia.
Skulina, a 6-foot-6 and 235-pound right-handed pitcher, consistently throws a fastball that has been clocked in above 90 mph. He is a two-year letterman, has compiled an 11-0 record in two seasons and helped the Warriors win the Division II state championship.
“A coach could not ask a young man for more effort, hard work and improvement than what Tyler has given our program during the past two years,” said Chris Kaczmar, who is entering his 15th season as Walsh’s baseball coach.
“To assume the role of our No. 1 starter in 2008 would be a difficult challenge for any sophomore, and needless to say, his year was a resounding success that included an unwavering commitment to the team, his family and himself. Tyler is mature beyond his years; a fierce competitor on the mound; and truly a kind, intelligent and caring young man.”
Skulina, a Strongsville native, went 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA in 2007 and went 8-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 2008. He was named Walsh’s 2008 MVP after striking out 73 batters and walking 18 in 59 2/3 innings.
He has a 3.2 grade-point average and intends to major in business at Virginia.
