Suburban League golf

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal sports writer

Green boys golf coach Dan Gorley is a gracious winner.

His team won the Suburban League postseason golf tournament Wednesday afternoon at Good Park Golf Course by edging Revere 323-327. Revere was the preseason and regular-season champion and, as a result, claimed the overall Suburban League title.

”They had a great team,” Gorley said of Revere.

Green was right up there with the Minutemen all season, and on Wednesday, the leaders for the Bulldogs were senior Charlie Miller (79), juniors Justin Grunstein (80) and Alex Hinkle (80), and senior Sean Myer (84).

”I was very happy with our guys,” Gorley said. ”They have played well all year.”

And Gorley said the roaring noise emanating from a huge chipper, used to mangle and grind fallen branches from the recent storm, wasn’t an issue.

”The course was in great shape,” Gorley said. ”There may have been a few times when it took some time to find a ball because it was underneath some leaves or a branch or something, but it wasn’t a problem at all. They did a nice job on the course.”

Larry Zimmerman, the course manager, appreciated Gorley’s compliments. He said his regular crew of 12 workers was up for the challenge.

”They came in Monday morning at 7 a.m., and they went right at it,” Zimmerman said. ”They got the fairways cleaned off and hauled away all the debris. Then we mowed all day Monday and rented a chipper for the debris and we’re continuing the [chipper] process now.

”My crew did a heck of a job getting the course ready for not only the [Suburban League] tournament, but for everyone,” Zimmerman said. ”They busted their tails.”

CVCA cross country

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal sports writer

Katie Gillespie’s favorite school period of the day? Lunch, of course.

Her next favorite?

Study hall, naturally.

Then there’s her other favorites like religion, German and physics.

The point is that Gillespie, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy’s standout senior distance runner, loves being in high school and wants to soak up every second of her last year.

She’s proud of her accomplishments on the cross country course and on the track. Last year during the cross country season, she finished fourth at the Division II state meet.

And during the track season, Gillespie, wearing her trademark bright yellow sunglasses, won four state championships as the team won the overall title. Gillespie ran as a member of the winning 3,200 relay team and won individual state championships in the 1,600 and 3,200.

This year, Gillespie said, she is trying to hold on to as many memories as possible.

”I don’t want high school to end,” she said. ”I love my school. I love my classes. I love my friends and I love my teammates.”

As Gillespie and her teammates look
toward the PAC-7 cross country championship and the postseason, the Royals (5-0) have established themselves as one of the top teams in the state — in any division — with the likes of Gillespie, senior Carolyn Case, sophomore Joy Talbott, freshman Laura Rybka, sophomore Irene Frangos, senior Brittany Fabris, senior Brianna Jones.

The Royals have put together an incredible streak. Since joining the PAC-7 in 2001, they have never been beaten in a league race and have won the championship each year.

”The team (concept) has always been strong at the school in past years and kids like Katie and Carolyn just picked up what the seniors before them had done,” CVCA coach George Hallis said. ”A lot of teams say they have close teams and I know we do.

”The ones who have left and gone to college always come back and say their college teams aren’t the same as it was here.”

Hallis said Case stepped up as one of the top senior leaders as well, which has taken some burden off Gillespie. The senior leadership has become a responsibility within the program over the years that isn’t taken lightly.

As Gillespie talks about her athletic family and all that it has and still wants to accomplish, she said the team feels no pressure to win every meet.

”We’re always talking and laughing when we’re together,” Gillespie said. ”We try to keep a lively and fun environment. If we’re running against a good team, that will show us where we need to be, so we just pray for strength to get through it. And coach Hallis does a great job of keeping us focused.”

CVCA will be competing in the Malone College Invitational this weekend, a meet that will include a majority of Division I teams.

”That will be good for us,” Hallis said. ”We’ll get a chance to run against a few Division I teams we haven’t faced before, like North Royalton and Mason, which are strong teams [in the state].”

The district, regional and state meets will be run Oct. 18, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, respectively.

Walsh Jesuit trio make Wrigley Field visit

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

A trio of Walsh Jesuit baseball players recently traveled to historic Wrigley Field and two got the opportunity to play where the Chicago Cubs play, Walsh coach Chris Kaczmar said.

Walsh juniors Tyler Skulina and Johnny Fasola played for the St. Louis Cardinals scout team, the Midwest Redbirds, who lost a game 4-2. Warriors senior catcher James Toland made the trip to Chicago, but did not play because of an injury (broken foot).

Skulina pitched one inning and struck out two batters. The 6-foot-6 right-hander allowed no hits, no runs and walked one.

Fasola made some solid defensive plays at third base, but went 0-for-4 at bat. He did walk and get an RBI.

The Redbirds program provides players the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of college scouts in a professional atmosphere. The team will get the chance to play games at major college baseball stadiums including Louisville, Kentucky, Miami (Ohio) and Notre Dame.

The Redbirds are a select team of players from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Western Pennsylvania. Cardinals area scout Brian Hopkins is the coach.

Walsh Jesuit’s 2009 baseball team is slated to return eight position-playing starters and three-fifth’s of its pitching staff from the 2008 Division II Ohio state champions. The Warriors finished with a record of 30-3 in 2008.
