Walsh’s Brunello committs to Kent State baseball

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Walsh Jesuit senior shortstop Ross Brunello has committed to continue his baseball and academic career at Kent State University.

Brunello becomes the second member of the class of 2008 to advance to the collegiate baseball level and the 31st Walsh Jesuit player in the last 12 years to advance to the NCAA Division I level.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Brunello will be a four-year letter winner with the Warriors. Last season, he batted .337 with 24 RBI and five home runs and was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player. As a sophomore in 2006, he was an integral member of the Division II state championship team, which was ranked No. 6 in the nation by USA Today. Brunello was honored as a USA Today Player of the Week during the team’s state tournament weekend.

“Ross Brunello is one of those rare players who has been able to make a positive impact on our baseball program in each of his four years at Walsh Jesuit,” Warriors coach Chris Kaczmar said. “He is a very gifted defensive player with an exceptional amount of hand quickness and ability. He is a fearless, hard-nosed competitor, and he loves the game. Ross is also a very hard worker and a tremendous person and friend whom I will miss dearly when he graduates.”

Football

Ravenna 21, Field 13

Varsity Letters Player of the Game: Ravenna senior wide receiver/running back/safety Jonathan Davis.

Davis carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. His 1-yard touchdown run gave Ravenna a 14-7 lead with 7:48 left in the game. Davis then helped the Ravens (7-2, 6-0 in the PTC Metro Division) seal the win with a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Bobby Clement.

With the win, Ravenna clinched at least a share of the PTC Metro Division title and will have a chance to win the championship outright next week when it hosts Springfield.

Field (8-1, 5-1) suffered its first loss of the season.

Davis was also a force on defense. He forced a fumble that was recovered by Ravenna as Field’s comeback attempt was delayed. After Field scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left, Davis blocked the Falcons’ extra-point kick.

“Jonathan Davis took the game over,” Ravenna coach Jim Lunardi said. “He stood out.”

Davis knew that his big plays on offense were important, but he said the Ravens defense was the difference because it was able to prevent Field from making a late comeback by forcing turnovers.

“We stayed pumped up,” Jonathan Davis said. “That’s one thing about our defense, we never get down. We stay hyped up. No matter what the offense is doing, our defense keeps us in the game.”

Firestone football team wins City Series title

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

The Firestone football team defeated host Kenmore 44-0 Saturday afternoon.

The victory allowed Firestone (7-2, 6-0) to clinch their first outright City Series football championship after sharing four City titles since the school opened in 1963 and began playing varsity football in 1964.

Firestone dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball with seniors DeAndre Tucker, Deshawn Cole, Jeffrey Brantley, Robert Trunck and Alex Paul standing out defensively with juniors Brandon Moore and Evan Robinson and sophomore Jeremy Brantley.

Juniors David Henderson, Max Henry and Richard Braucci compose the Falcons offensive line with Tucker and senior Ben White.

Falcons senior quarterback Trevor Kennedy led the offense with a rushing touchdown and two passing touchdowns to senior receiver Gray Franklin. Kennedy completed 9-of-19 passes for 133 yards and rushed for 26 yards on five carries.

Senior Ross Davis scored two touchdowns and gained 102 rushing yards on 18 carries in place of senior Darshawn Thomas, who was out with a minor injury.

Junior DeShawn Grice gained 58 yards on five carries and freshman Cody Grice scored a 23-yard touchdown. Junior Brian Lewis gained 25 yards on five carries and sophomore Ricky Powers rushed for 22 yards on four carries.

The Falcons defense forced the Cardinals (0-9, 0-5) into a safety. Falcons senior kicker Dominic Moore made all six extra point attempts.

The victory also allowed coach Tim Flossie to win a City Series football championship at three different schools: Central-Hower, Buchtel and Firestone. Flossie is a former standout quarterback at Garfield.

Firestone is currently No. 5 in the Division II Region 5 computer rankings with the top eight in each region making the playoffs. Firestone plays at Walsh Jesuit in Week 10. The Warriors are ranked second in the Division III Region 9 computer rankings.

Week 9 football preview

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

If you care about high school football at all, find a way to go to one of these games this weekend. There are several great matchups that will likely decide league championships.

Here are some games that caught my attention and who I think will win these key matchups:

North Canton Hoover at Perry (7:30 p.m. Friday): This game will feature the top two teams in the Federal League standings and will likely determine the eventual league champion. Hoover’s passing attack led by senior quarterback Jared Wackerly and senior receiver Matt Wakulchik will clash with Perry’s running attack led by senior running back Eric Magnacca. Both teams have records of 6-1, 4-1 in the Federal League.

Nate’s prediction: Perry.

Field at Ravenna (7:30 p.m. Friday): This game will likely determine the eventual Portage Trail Conference Metro Division champion. Field (8-0, 5-0) is led by one of the best running backs in the area: senior Seth Koosed. Ravenna (6-2, 5-0) is led by a trio of cousins: junior running back/safety Blayre Davis, senior wide receiver-running back/safety Jonathan Davis and senior fullback/linebacker Roy Davis.

Nate’s prediction: Field.

Nordonia at Mayfield (7:30 p.m. Friday): This winner of this game will almost surely go on to become the Northeast Ohio Conference River Division champion. Both teams are 7-1, 3-0 and playoff bound.

Nate’s prediction: Nordonia.

Hillsdale at Waynedale (7:30 p.m. Friday): This will be a showdown between two of the best teams in the Wayne County Athletic League. Hillsdale (7-1, 4-1) will try to knock Norwayne off and force the possibility of a co-championship in the WCAL. Meanwhile, Waynedale (7-1, 5-0) can make a significant step in securing an outright league championship with a victory.

Nate’s prediction: Waynedale.

Firestone at Kenmore (noon Saturday): The Falcons (6-2, 5-0) have a chance to clinch their first outright City Series title in school history.

Nate’s prediction: Firestone.

Let me know what you think of these games. Who will win? Who will lose? Why?
