Football

Stow 22, Hudson 17 (click here for the game story)

Varsity Letters Player of the Game: Stow senior quarterback Alex Loftin completed 13-of-19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown to lead the host Bulldogs (6-0, 1-0) over the Explorers (3-3, 0-1) in the first Northeast Ohio Conference River Division game for both teams.

Loftin also carried the ball eight times for 105 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed Stow’s first win against Hudson since 2000.

Hudson coach Tom Narducci was impressed by the opposing quarterback’s performance Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

“I think Loftin is as good of a player as we’ve seen all year,” Narducci said. “He makes plays, and he’s a difference maker. He has a strong arm - I mean there were a couple that he just put on a rope. He’s just a very good athlete. He’s the go-to guy for that team.”

Loftin is also a standout pitcher for the Bulldogs’ baseball team. He was the 2006 Baseball Player of the Year in the now-defunct Western Reserve Conference.

City Series Surprise

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Here are a few quick notes regarding City Series football, which has certainly been surprising this season.

The madness began Sept. 15 when Ellet defeated Buchtel.

With Buchtel (0-5, 0-3 City Series) struggling, the race for the title is wide open. It appears that (listed alphabetically) Firestone (3-2, 2-0), Garfield (3-2, 1-0) and North (4-1, 2-0) are the favorites to win the City Series title.

These notes were gathered via Beacon Journal records.

– The Firestone win over Ellet (27-7) on Friday (Sept. 21) was the Falcons first victory over the Orangemen (3-2, 1-1) since 1996. Ellet had won 10 in a row over Firestone from 1997-2006. The Falcons defeated the Orangemen twice in the 1995 season, once in the regular season and once in the City championship game. It should be noted that Buchtel played in the state playoffs that season and that is why Firestone and Ellet met in the title game.

– The North win over Buchtel (24-0) on Friday (Sept. 21) was the Vikings first victory over the Griffins in 23 years, according to people within the North football community.

– Firestone and North meet this Friday (Sept. 28). The Falcons won last year 21-6, but the Vikings won the previous four meetings (2002-2005). Since 1994, North has won seven times and Firestone has won six times.

– Firestone and Garfield meet next Friday (Oct. 5). The Falcons won 37-21 last year, but the Golden Rams won the previous nine meetings (1996-2005). Since 1994, Garfield is 10-2 against Firestone (wins in 1995 and 2006). They did not play each other in 2004.

– Garfield and Buchtel meet Oct. 19. The Golden Rams last beat the Griffins in 2001 and 1998. Buchtel has won the past five meetings (2002-2006).

I will look for other trends and streaks within the City Series and post them at a later date. Stay tuned.

Hoover cross country teams win two titles

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

The North Canton Hoover Vikings boys and girls cross country squads each won team championships Saturday at the 2007 Cloverleaf Colt Pack Invitational.

Hoover senior Adam Stackpole won the boys “Varsity Green” race with a time of 16:11.88. Walsh Jesuit senior Jonathan Shepherd placed second with a 16:28.02

Four Vikings placed between ninth and 12th: junior Zach Goulet, sophomore Sergi Cribben and Parker Queen, and senior Nick Stroemple.

Hoover sophomore Tyler Stackpole placed 14th and junior Andy Motz was 33rd.

Walsh Jesuit junior Chelsea Oswald won the girls “Varsity Green” race in a time of 18:31.69.

Hoover sophomore Erin Garfield placed second with a time of 19:27.69 Vikings sophomores Allison Peare and Sarah Tirrell were fifth and sixth, and freshman Megan Monte finished eighth.

Freshmen Sara Polatas (14th) and Stephanie Rosso (20th) rounded out the Vikings top seven with senior Suzie Semroc (90th).

**Note — There will be additional cross country items later this week regarding several schools, such as: Medina, Green, Jackson, Louisville, Hudson, Woodridge, Crestwood, St. Thomas Aquinas, CVCA and Waterloo. Stay tuned.

Week 5 football review

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Unbelievable. That’s the only word I can think of when describing how the City Series football season is unfolding.

Buchtel is 0-5, 0-2 in the City Series. What happened to the perennial league powerhouse that usually blows City rivals away with lopsided wins?

North is 4-1, 2-0 in the City Series. The Vikings defeated Buchtel for the first time in 23 years with a 24-0 win Friday night. North was 1-9 last season. What is going on?

Firestone is 3-2, 2-0 in the City Series. One week after Ellet defeated Buchtel 14-12, Firestone defeated Ellet 27-7. It was the first time Firestone defeated Ellet since 1996.

THE CITY SERIES HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN!

Firestone, North and Garfield (the Golden Rams defeated East 49-27 Saturday) are the only teams that are undefeated in league play. They are now the favorites instead of last season’s co-champs and traditional powers Buchtel and Ellet.

Here are some other Week 5 scores that caught my attention:

Stow 40, Medina 22

*The Bulldogs are 5-0. They were 2-8 in each of the past two seasons. Medina is a good team. The Bees made the playoffs for the first time in school history last season but that didn’t stop Stow from thrashing them.

Tallmadge 34, Cloverleaf 0

*Both teams entered this game with 4-0 records, but the Blue Devils showed they’re still the team to beat in the Suburban League.

St. Vincent-St. Mary 21, Napoleon 15

*There are usually two ways of measuring the character of a team: how it handles adversity and how it handles success. The Irish broke a nine-year losing streak against Archbishop Hoban in Week 4. St. V-M then followed that emotional win with a victory against a very good Napoleon team to stay undefeated.

Canton Central Catholic 19, Bedford St. Peter Chanel 0

*In another showdown between two previously undefeated teams, the Crusaders proved this will be a special season for them.

Hillsdale 21, Norwayne 20

*This game really surprised me. Both Wayne County Athletic League teams entered the matchup undefeated, but I still think Hillsdale was considered the underdog because of what Norwayne did last year(8-2 in 2006) with a lot of returning players. However, Hillsdale won this nail-bitter that might ultimately decide the WCAL champion.

Mogadore 34, Garrettsville 31

*I was lucky enough to cover a great game Friday between last season’s Portage Trail Conference County Division co-champs. Both teams fought very hard, but Mogadore showed it has a running back duo that can’t be stopped (seniors Cody Destro and Ryan Brodie) and that was the difference.

Northwest 24, Canton South 7

*Northwest is still undefeated and looking like it could be a serious contender in the state playoffs.

Walsh Jesuit 44, Parma Padua Franciscan 27

*Walsh coach Gerry Rardin earned his 200th career win Saturday, and the Warriors remained undefeated despite losing star sophomore running back Cameron Ontko to mono.

Football

Garfield 49, East 27

Varsity Letters Player of the Game: Garfield senior quarterback Lorenzo Sanchez completed 12-of-13 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns to lead Garfield (3-2, 1-0) over East (0-5, 0-2) in a City Series game.

“Lorenzo has been throwing good passes and making good decisions,” Garfield coach Bob Sax said of Sanchez.

Football

Mogadore 34, Garrettsville 31

Varsity Letters Player of the Game: Mogadore senior running back Cody Destro carried the ball 21 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats (4-1, 1-0) over Garrettsville (2-3, 1-1) in a battle between last season’s Portage Trail Conference County Division co-champs.

Destro had touchdown runs of 57, 3 and 1 yards to help Mogadore defeat the Wildcats for the second consecutive season.

Mogadore senior running back Ryan Brodie also had 15 carries, 96 yards and a rushing touchdown.

“With Cody’s size, he is going to wear teams down a little bit,” Mogadore coach Matt Adorni said. “Hopefully he’ll be able to open up the outside a little bit for Brodie.”
