Brooks transfers to University of Akron for basketball

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Coach Keith Dambrot has added another local talent to the University of Akron men’s basketball team.

Rydell Brooks, a 2006 Buchtel High School graduate, has transferred from Niagara University to the University of Akron and is a member of the Zips men’s basketball team, UA Assistant Director of Athletics Media Relations Gregg Bach said.

Bach said Brooks will have to sit out the 2007-08 season and will be eligible to play at UA the following three seasons. Brooks is currently a walk-on.

Brooks, a 6-foot-2 and 190-pound guard, led Buchtel to three consecutive City Series championships. He was selected as the City Series Player of the Year his junior and senior years and was a Division II second-team all-Ohio pick as a senior.

Brooks averaged 27.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.8 steals during his senior campaign as the Griffins leader.

He helped Niagara win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship as a freshman. Niagara went 23-12 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Eagles won 12 consecutive games, including the a win over Florida A&M in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Kansas.

Brooks played in all 35 games with 30 starts. He averaged 4.7 points in 18 minutes per game.

The addition of Brooks gives the Zips six area high school graduates on the roster: Tim Carroll (CVCA), Eric Coblentz (Lake), Nick Goddard (Wadsworth), Andrew Moss (Copley), Jeremiah Wood (Central-Hower) and Brooks.

UA went 26-7 last season, winning the Mid-American Conference East Division title and losing in the MAC Tournament championship game. The Zips must replace standouts Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce III, a pair of 2003 St. Vincent-St. Mary graduates, that were key players for four years.

Moore commits to University of Akron soccer team

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Firestone senior Dominic Moore has orally committed to the University of Akron soccer team, Falcons coach Mark Schwerdtfeger said.

Moore, who is also an accomplished hurdler in track, played stopper in the Falcons defensive alignment last fall.

“He is such a strong defender,” Schwerdtfeger said. “He is a really good leader and he is probably the most athletic player I have had in my 13 years as Firestone’s coach.”

As a sophomore, Moore was fourth in the 300 hurdles at the Division I state meet and seventh in the 110 hurdles. He has won two City Series titles in the 300 hurdles and was a regional qualifier as a junior, but could not compete due to an injury.

Moore was also an all-district soccer selection as a junior.

Speas on U.S. U-17 National Soccer Team

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Junior Ben Speas will not be playing on the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy soccer team this season because he was named to the U.S. U-17 National team in Bradenton, Fla., CVCA coach Jason Spodnik said.

Speas is in a pool of 40 players who train in Brandenton and attend IMG Academy. Spodnik said Speas could return to CVCA for his senior year.

Speas, a 5-foot-7, 145-pound midfielder who earned first-team all-district honors last fall, had eight goals and 12 assists for CVCA (17-2-1) as a sophomore.

He then played for the U-17 National team. His biggest achievement in an American uniform came April 27 in Larne, Northern Ireland, when he scored a goal against Israel in a 5-1 U.S. win.

Spodnik said a player of Speas’ caliber will be hard to replace in the Royals lineup.

Barton headed to Ohio State for soccer

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Walsh Jesuit senior soccer player Chris Barton has orally committed to Ohio State University, Warriors coach John Kissner said.

Barton, who is also a standout sprinter in track and a kickoff specialist in football, is a midfielder on the soccer team. He had six goals and two assists last season for the Warriors, who won the Division II state championship.

Entering this season he has 12 career goals and nine career assists. Barton placed third in the 100 meters in the Division II state meet this past spring and also qualified for state in the 200.

Must see football games for week 2

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

After an exciting first week of high school football, I expect week 2 to be even more interesting.

The Beacon Journal’s preseason No. 1 team, Tallmadge, defeated Cuyahoga Falls 17-14 in week 1. The close score makes me think that either Tallmadge is more vulnerable than I thought or Cuyahoga Falls is better than I thought. This week, Tallmadge plays Ellet and Cuyahoga Falls plays Wadsworth. I hope Friday’s games reveal more about Tallmadge and Cuyahoga Falls because frankly, I was confused by their season opener.

I also think North at Coventry will be interesting. Ken Johnson won his head coaching debut last week when North defeated Rootstown 19-14. Coventry lost 26-6 to Garfield Heights Trinity in week 1. It will be interesting to find out if North is the real deal and can put a winning streak together.

Lake at Louisville is another key matchup. Both teams are coming off impressive road wins. Lake defeated Copley 34-6, and Louisville beat Ravenna 35-28 last week. Louisville will look for revenge after losing to Lake last year.

I think the “Game of the Week” is Walsh Jesuit at Archbishop Hoban. I think Walsh has the advantage because they have outstanding offensive and defensive linemen. Hoban, though, has playmakers such as tight end/defensive back Will Fleming and running back/linebacker Steve Yoak. The Knights defeated Garfield 24-21, and Walsh defeated Hoban 42-14 last week.

What do you think will happen in these games? Let me know if you think there are any other key games that I didn’t mention.

Canton Timken ends streak

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

The Canton Timken football team ended a 28-game losing streak this afternoon by defeating Cleveland Heights Lutheran East in convincing fashion — 41-0.

The victory ends a frustrating streak. The Trojans were winless the past two seasons and last won on Sept. 4, 2004 against Field.
