Can Hafner return to past glories?

October 4, 2009

BOSTON: The Indians’ lineup hasn’t been nearly as robust since Travis Hafner was regularly hammering pitches into the seats in 2006.

That was the year Hafner hit 42 home runs, amassed 117 RBI and batted .308. Then came the mysterious on and off slump of 2007 (.266, 24 HR, 100 RBI), followed by the injury-filled [...]

July 31, 2009

When Indians general manager Mark Shapiro went to bed late Thursday night, he had no intention of trading Tribe All-Star catcher Victor Martinez before baseball’s trading deadline the next day.
But as Friday progressed, it became clear that trading Martinez was indeed the direction the Indians were headed. The deal was finally reached in the late [...]

Shapiro fights to maintain normalcy

July 6, 2009

Until this year, General Manager Mark Shapiro had never gone through a season in which the Indians’ performance fell so totally below expectations and the heat on his manager, Eric Wedge, was so intense.
These kinds of seasons take a toll on all of the decision makers associated with a club. But maybe it’s true that [...]

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.: One day before the end of Travis Hafner’s rehabilitation assignment at Columbus, Indians officials weren’t certain what to expect from their designated hitter.

5-16-09 Morning RoundUp

May 15, 2009

It’s nice to see the Indians bats come alive all of the sudden, and well the pitching held up well enough to get the Indians its second consecutive win. Just ignore Fausto Carmona’s sixth inning implosion and you’ll feel much better about it.
Sheldon Ocker game story.
Paul Honyes game story….

5-5-09 Morning RoundUp

May 5, 2009

Yesterday I pulled up the Indians statistics for runners in scoring position with two outs and it wasn’t pretty. The Indians have the worst batting average during those situations in the entire league at .160. They had only driven in 26 runs.
Why do I still bring this up after a 9-7, 12-inning see-saw win [...]

April 26, 2009

What positives could be taken from Saturday night’s 7-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field?
Starting pitching?
Carl Pavano allowed five runs and 11 hits in five innings. He walked one. But as Sheldon Ocker points out, the Twins two, fourth-inning runs were made possible by four consecutive groundballs.
relief pitching?
Rafael Perez is being brought back [...]

4-24-09 Morning RoundUp

April 24, 2009

Thursday’s game against the Royals was one the Indians had no business winning, but somehow, they still did.
They survived three errors and 16 batters with out a base runner before Grady Sizemore bailed out the team with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Indians went on to win 5-2, thus winning their [...]

April 21, 2009

Rafael Perez is lugging around a 16.71 ERA and has made just one praiseworthy appearance in seven outings.
Jensen Lewis has pitched six times and given up four home runs and four walks in 6j innings; two of the longballs were lethal to the Indians’ chances of sweeping the New York Yankees last weekend, a series [...]

Morning roundup, March 24

March 24, 2009

Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro took some time yesterday to discuss the state of this year’s team. Sheldon Ocker and the PD’s Paul Hoynes were listening.
This is kind of a telling quote from Ocker’s story:
”Yes, I’m interested in making a deal,” Shapiro said Monday. ”I still spend a lot of time talking to [...]

Deceptive outing for Carmona

March 9, 2009

Fausto Carmona gave up three runs and five hits in three innings, but it was really better than that.
One problem: Ben Francisco stumbled chasing Chris Getz’s drive to center and the ball rolled all the way to the wall for an inside-the-park home run that probably should have been a double.
“That’s the only pitch I [...]
