Reexamining the Indians 2007 prospects

February 26, 2010

Four years ago Baseball America annointed the Indians farm system the 10th best in baseball.
“The Indians formula remains consistent,” they wrote in the 2007 Baseball America Prospect Handbook.
“They have outstanding depth, keeping them around the top 10, even while remaking the big league club. The organization’s strengths include left-handed pitching and power relievers.”
Was that an [...]

Westbrook shut down six more weeks

August 11, 2009

CLEVELAND: Any hope the Indians had that Jake Westbrook would beat the healing curve disappeared Monday, when they received the report from Los Angeles orthopedist Lewis Yocum.
Monday, Westbrook visited the doctor who performed his right elbow reconstruction in June of 2008, because he was experiencing soreness in the elbow after his last rehabilitation start.
“The purpose [...]

Now is no time to quit

July 10, 2009

DETROIT: Why not call it a season after the All-Star Game?
Forfeit the rest of the games and tell the guys, “Don’t fall in any holes over the winter; eat your granola, and see you in Goodyear next spring.”
Sounds like a plan for the Indians.
Of course, there’s a catch, maybe two: The commissioner wouldn’t allow it, [...]

CLEVELAND: Barring further disabling injuries, by the end of June the Indians’ rotation might include most of the players, and more, who started the season.

“Laffey (right oblique strain) played catch from 60 feet today for the first time,” [...]

Wedge too busy to worry about job

May 11, 2009

CLEVELAND: Once the subject of a manager’s job security is broached publicly, the story tends to take on a life of its own.
After the Indians’ loss to the Tigers Sunday, two players were asked whether manager Eric Wedge should be taking heat for the team’s ugly start. Both players, Victor Martinez and Mark DeRosa, emphatically [...]

5-3-09 Morning RoundUp

May 3, 2009

Rafael Betancourt step right up. It’s your turn to cough up a lead!
The Indians have been able to score back-to-back wins just once this season and are now fighting to get over that hump.
In Saturday’s 9-7 loss to the Tigers the Indians responded to a five-run deficit early before eventually taking the lead in [...]

Wanted: clutch hitters

April 14, 2009

Raise the topic of excessive striking out, and Eric Wedge’s blood pressure doesn’t budge. But mention that the Indians have 21 strikeouts with runners in scoring positon, and the manager begins to bristle.
“We’ve been striking out entirely too much with runners in scoring position,” he said Tuesday. “I don’t get too caught up in strikes [...]

Manny (probably) can’t go home again

April 13, 2009

It didn’t take long for Manny Ramirez to realize he never had it so good playing for the Indians.
After signing an eight-year, $160 million contract with the Red Sox after the 2000 season, he communicated his desire to return to the Tribe to clubhouse personnel and some of his former Tribe teammates, particularly utility infielder [...]

Lewis injury goes back to training camp

April 12, 2009

Scott Lewis‘ forearm injury is not considered serious, but it will keep him on the disabled list for two to four weeks in the estimation of Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff.
After examining an MRI scan of Lewis’ left arm, Soloff said Sunday, “It was very encouraging news. He has a mild left forearm strain. He [...]

Add Scott Lewis to Tribe DL

April 11, 2009

It might be almost a relief to some Indians observers that Scott Lewis was placed in the disabled list Saturday with a strained left elbow.
That would explain his sudden vulnerabiltiy Friday, when after delivering three scoreless innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, he gave up four runs (including two homers) in the next two.
“We found [...]

April 1, 2009 Morning Roundup

April 1, 2009

Maybe the Indians should have kept a secret from Scott Lewis?
Maybe they should have never told him he will start the season in the big league rotation?
He hasn’t taken the news so well.
In his last two outings since being named a starter, Lewis has been roughed up, including yesterday’s 10 runs on 13 hits [...]

Smith, Kobayashi shine after Lewis fails

March 31, 2009

Like so many of the Indians’ spring training games, Tuesday’s 12-4 loss to the Mariners wasn’t pretty.
The good news for the Tribe: Masa Kobayashi worked a hitless inning, and Joe Smith pitched effectively, despite giving up one run and two hits in two innings. Smith didn’t issue a walk and struck out three.
As a sidearming [...]

March 28, 2009

3-27-09 Morning Roundup

March 27, 2009

Scott Lewis didn’t exactly make the Indians feel comfortable about their decision to make him the fourth starter.
A day after being publicly announced as such, Lewis was shellacked by the Los Angeles Angels.
Eight hits and five runs in three innings. Three of the runs came via long ball when Bobby Abreu, Vladimir Guerrero [...]

3-26-09 Morning Roundup

March 26, 2009

Yesterday’s biggest news centered around the battle for the fifth starter position, which in actuality was the battle for the fourth starter position.
Nevertheless, left hander Scott Lewis edged Aaron Laffey for the spot. Sheldon Ocker and the PD’s Paul Hoynes both wrote about the choice.
The Starting rotation is now set and looks like this:
Left [...]

Deceptive outing for Carmona

March 9, 2009

Fausto Carmona gave up three runs and five hits in three innings, but it was really better than that.
One problem: Ben Francisco stumbled chasing Chris Getz’s drive to center and the ball rolled all the way to the wall for an inside-the-park home run that probably should have been a double.
“That’s the only pitch I [...]

Shapiro puts Indians in position to win

January 9, 2009

But for the depressed economy, the Indians would be the proud caretakers of a roster that includes Manny Ramirez, CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez.
OK, maybe not. Not even General Manager Mark Shapiro would allow himself the luxury of imagining such a fantasy. Especially Shapiro, who is charged with the job of making hard-headed [...]
