Bullpen better, but Perez, Lewis still shaky

August 12, 2009

CLEVELAND: It took more than half a season, but the Indians’ bullpen finally is becoming an asset.
Manager Eric Wedge credits the relievers’ recent success to the rotation, at least in part.

Little help for Cleveland pitching woes in Columbus

July 10, 2009

The Indians pitching problems this year go much deeper than just the major-league organization. Cleveland’s Triple A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers, are hurting just as bad for pitching help. Wedge challenges relievers

July 9, 2009

CHICAGO: Eric Wedge doesn’t get it. The manager of the Indians fails to understand why so few among the 19 pitchers who have tried to find employment in the bullpen have fallen short.
Rafael Betancourt is not one of those. He returned Thursday after spending more than five weeks on the disabled list with a strained [...]

Sowers headed for bullpen?

July 8, 2009

CHICAGO: Jeremy Sowers has presented the Indians with their latest dilemma.
Sowers has consistently breezed through four innings before running into certain trouble in the fifth or sixth inning. Manager Eric Wedge has watched this happen often enough to believe that Sowers is not merely going through a temporary slump.

Wedge issues for Tribe manager

June 16, 2009

CLEVELAND: Manager Eric Wedge doesn’t mind identifying two aspects of the Indians’ game that cause a spike in his blood pressure: walks and strikeouts.
Only one American League team’s pitchers have issued more walks per game than the Tribe. The Yankee staff has walked an average of 3.97 batters per game, the Indians 3.95.
Among the league’s [...]

5-23-09 Morning RoundUp

May 23, 2009

The Indians seemed like they were finally making strides to piece together the season. That was before Anthony Reyes and Aaron Laffey were bit by the injury bug yesterday.

Laffey assigned to save bullpen

May 6, 2009

With few moves to make and lots of holes to fill in the Indians’ bullpen, General Manager Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge are using the creative approach.
Why not ask a starter to become a reliever, at least temporarily, or maybe not. At this point, nobody can say when the bullpen crisis will end, or [...]

5-4-09 Morning RoundUp

May 4, 2009

The kids were in the lineup yesterday. It still didn’t matter as the Indians fell 3-1 to the Tigers.
Detroit starting pitcher Justin Verlander reminded everyone why he is considered one of the best arms in the game, although he hadn’t shown that form as of late. The Indians have a way of bringing out that [...]

DeRosa back on track

May 3, 2009

The siege appears to be over for Mark DeRosa, whose batting average fell to .195 in the middle of last week before his bat began to spit out a few hits.
The slump cost DeRosa the No. 2 spot in the batting order, which now belongs to Asdrubal Cabrera, who does not intend to surrender it [...]

May 2, 2009 Morning RoundUp

May 2, 2009

If only they could get that bullpen straightened out as well.
On Friday Carl Pavano and the offense already built a big enough lead so the bullpen couldn’t blow it, but they still tried in a 6-5 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Put April behind us, it’s a new month, wrote Sheldon Ocker.
Pavano [...]

Chulk making impression?

April 25, 2009

Vinnie Chulk pitched two strong innings Friday night, throwing 94 mile-per-hour fastballs.
So far Chulk has been almost an afterthought in the bullpen — he pitched once in six days — and was called up from Columbus as the eighth reliever when the bullpen was struggling mightily.
Manager Eric Wedge had planned to return to seven after [...]

Relievers wanted: Call Tribe

April 17, 2009

The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone, and the thigh bone’s is connected to the hip bone…
Depending on whether all the parts of work together, life will be easier or a struggle. Eric Wedge is painfully aware of this fact, which is a key component of the Indians’ 3-8 record.
The Tribe’s relief corps is [...]

Wedge holds early team meeting

April 15, 2009

Indians officials did not send an advisory to the Guinness Book of World Records, but when manager Eric Wedge addressed his troops after only eight games Tuesday night it might have established an American League mark, at the very least.
But there was no use waiting around, inasmuch as the Tribe had only one win.
“I talked [...]
