New reliever ready to go

August 5, 2009

CLEVELAND: Apparently, Jess Todd is quick study.
In his first two minor league seasons with the Cardinals, he was a starter almost exclusively. Then he came to the spring training this year and got the word.
“They told me I was going to the bullpen,” Todd said Tuesday, after being recalled from Columbus by the Indians. “”I [...]

Tribe roster on hold?

July 11, 2009

DETROIT: With a roster that includes an inordinate number of pitchers, the Indians can use the All-Star break to rebalance their squad. But will they?
“We have no plan to do that right now,” manager Eric Wedge said Saturday. “”But Mark (Shapiro) and I haven’t had full discussions about that yet.”
Including Toma Ohka, who will make [...]

Hafner starts to pick up the pace

June 17, 2009

CLEVELAND: Wednesday was another scheduled night off for Travis Hafner, whose return to the Indians’ lineup, while sporadic, has been marked mostly by success.
Hafner says his surgically operated right shoulder is less subject to soreness and fatigue, and in his first 29 at-bats, he is hitting .310 with three home runs, eight RBI, and characteristically, [...]

Hafner’s status still up in air

June 2, 2009

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.: One day before the end of Travis Hafner’s rehabilitation assignment at Columbus, Indians officials weren’t certain what to expect from their designated hitter.
Hafner left the Clippers and reported to Progressive Field, “”to get looked and get treatment,” manager Eric Wedge said.
Tonight, he will make what is presumed to be his final appearance in [...]

Trading away the Tribe

May 18, 2009

Plenty of rumors have already swirled this season as the Indians carry the worst record in the American League and the second worst in all of baseball.
If the Indians continue their downward slide who might be traded away for top of the line (pitching) prospects?
We have already heard the Cliff Lee rumors plenty of times [...]

Wedge too busy to worry about job

May 11, 2009

CLEVELAND: Once the subject of a manager’s job security is broached publicly, the story tends to take on a life of its own.
After the Indians’ loss to the Tigers Sunday, two players were asked whether manager Eric Wedge should be taking heat for the team’s ugly start. Both players, Victor Martinez and Mark DeRosa, emphatically [...]

A look around the Indians minor leagues

May 6, 2009

With the parent-club Indians calling up players, demoting others and even turning starting pitchers into relievers in an effort to help right the ship, let’s find some positives by checking in on the Tribe’s minor league teams.
Triple-A Columbus

Laffey assigned to save bullpen

May 6, 2009

With few moves to make and lots of holes to fill in the Indians’ bullpen, General Manager Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge are using the creative approach.
Why not ask a starter to become a reliever, at least temporarily, or maybe not. At this point, nobody can say when the bullpen crisis will end, or [...]

Barfield sees the whole spectrum

May 5, 2009

Josh Barfield took a whirlwind tour of the best and worst that baseball has to offer Monday night.
In a span of four innings, Barfield went from hero to goat to hero again, as the Indians rallied three times to earn a 9-7, 12-inning win over the Blue Jays.
Until then, his only appearance for the Tribe [...]

Balky shoulder puts Hafner on DL

April 29, 2009

Travis Hafner’s surgically repaired right shoulder has again become an issue for the Indians.
Wednesday afternoon, Hafner was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will visit Birmingham, Ala., orthopedist James Andrews, probably on Monday.
“Hafner is having some soreness and a little fatigue in the shoulder,” manager Eric Wedge said. “”We knew this could come up. [...]

Reyes pitches out of crucial jam

April 23, 2009

Manager Eric Wedge likes to say it starts with starting pitching.
The manager of the Indians isn’t being redundant. What he means is winning probably isn’t going to happen if the starting pitcher lets a game get out of hand.
With that in mind, Anthony Reyes deserves to be pleased with his outing Thursday, even though he [...]

April 23, 2009

The starting pitching seems to be turning a corner, but where were the bats Wednesday?

As April gets closer to May though, Lee has already equaled his loss total from a year ago (three). It [...]

April 22, 2009

Tony Sipp figured he was in big trouble Tuesday night.
Columbus manager Torey Lovullo phoned Sipp at his digs long after the game was over, asking him to drive back to the ballpark.
“I thought I did something wrong,” said Sipp, who was summoned from Triple-A for the first time in his career to help settle the [...]

Searching for answers

April 21, 2009

Rafael Perez is lugging around a 16.71 ERA and has made just one praiseworthy appearance in seven outings.
Jensen Lewis has pitched six times and given up four home runs and four walks in 6j innings; two of the longballs were lethal to the Indians’ chances of sweeping the New York Yankees last weekend, a series [...]

And it only cost $1.5 billion

April 16, 2009

There is a time warp effect for fans sitting in the new Yankee Stadlium.
The shape and sight lines of the grandstand, the dimensions of the field, the location of the bullpens, the scoreboard filled with ads and the iconic slatted frieze that rings the facing of the upper deck are nearly identical to old Yankee [...]
