5-5-09 Morning RoundUp

May 5, 2009

Yesterday I pulled up the Indians statistics for runners in scoring position with two outs and it wasn’t pretty. The Indians have the worst batting average during those situations in the entire league at .160. They had only driven in 26 runs. Why do I still bring this up after a 9-7, 12-inning see-saw win [...]

4-24-09 Morning RoundUp

April 24, 2009

Thursday’s game against the Royals was one the Indians had no business winning, but somehow, they still did.  They survived three errors and 16 batters with out a base runner before Grady Sizemore bailed out the team with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Indians went on to win 5-2, thus [...]

Indians win rubber match with Royals

April 23, 2009

It didn’t look promising for seven innings, but, perhaps, the Indians were just biding their time. Kansas City starting pitcher Gil Meche retired 16 straight batters at one point before an error by second basemen Alberto Callaspo allowed the tying run to score in the eighth, making the score 2-2. The next batter Grady [...]

Relievers wanted: Call Tribe

April 17, 2009

The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone, and the thigh bone’s is connected to the hip bone… Depending on whether all the parts of work together, life will be easier or a struggle. Eric Wedge is painfully aware of this fact, which is a key component of the Indians’ 3-8 record.  The Tribe’s relief [...]

4-13-09 Morning Roundup

April 13, 2009

The Cleveland Indians played their best baseball game yet in this early, early season. The result? It’s first win. It’s amazing how that works. Trevor Crowe pick up his first major league hit, a two-run double in the fifth. Travis Hafner hit a home run in his third consecutive game. Anthony Reyes, unlike the other [...]

Lewis injury goes back to training camp

April 12, 2009

Scott Lewis‘ forearm injury is not considered serious, but it will keep him on the disabled list for two to four weeks in the estimation of Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff.  After examining an MRI scan of Lewis’ left arm, Soloff said Sunday, “It was very encouraging news. He has a mild left forearm strain. [...]

4-7-09 Morning Roundup

April 7, 2009

Texas Rangers ace Kevin Millwood was making his fourth consecutive opening day start since joining the Texas Rangers. The results have never been good (0-3). They were Monday. Millwood pitched seven strong innings allowing just one run and five hits, all singles, to pick up the easy 9-1 win. Millwood has been a disappointment for [...]

4-5-09 Morning Roundup

April 5, 2009

With just one day before the season starts, The Beacon Journal decided today would be the best day to disperse its season preview section.  For the casual fan it offers a chance to get caught up on all the happenings before the season begins. For the more educated fan, its a regurgitation of all the [...]

4-4-09 Morning Roundup

April 4, 2009

Fausto Carmona will begin this season the way he ended last year: Suspended. The right-hander was suspended for five games at the end of last season for beating the crap out of Gary Sheffield. (If I remember correctly, it appeared more as if he was giving Sheffield a noogie than actually beating the crap out [...]

4-3-09 Morning Roundup

April 3, 2009

Good riddance, Goodyear. At least that’s the tone coming out of spring training. Appropriately, the Indians ended their 30-game stay by struggling mightily in a 9-8 loss to the Cubs Thursday. This time it was Anthony Reyes turn to get roughed up. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits in two innings, [...]

April 2, 2009

Ace Cliff Lee didn’t exactly pitch like a reigning CY Young winner again yesterday when he gave up seven runs on nine hits, including three home runs, in five innings of work. His spring numbers now look like this in 21 2/3 innings: 12.46 ERA 33 runs 46 hits The opposition hit .407 off him. [...]

April 1, 2009

The Indians traded right-handed relief pitcher Ed Mujica to the San Diego padres today for a player to be named or cash considerations. There has been no word whether a bucket of baseballs was included as well. Vinnie Chulk was assigned to minor league camp. Also, waiver claim Jae Kuk Ryu is back with the [...]

April 1, 2009 Morning Roundup

April 1, 2009

Maybe the Indians should have kept a secret from Scott Lewis? Maybe they should have never told him he will start the season in the big league rotation? He hasn’t taken the news so well. In his last two outings since being named a starter, Lewis has been roughed up, including yesterday’s 10 runs on [...]

Smith, Kobayashi shine after Lewis fails

March 31, 2009

Like so many of the Indians’ spring training games, Tuesday’s 12-4 loss to the Mariners wasn’t pretty. The good news for the Tribe: Masa Kobayashi worked a hitless inning, and Joe Smith pitched effectively, despite giving up one run and two hits in two innings. Smith didn’t issue a walk and struck out three. As [...]

Hafner hits first homer

March 30, 2009

Travis Hafner validated manager Eric Wedge’s confidence in him by hitting his first home run of the spring Monday against the Padres. The Indians’ designated hitter picked on a second-inning, 2-and-2 breaking pitch from Kevin Correia and sent it soaring over the right-center field fence, perhaps 395 feet from home plate. “I don’t think Hafner [...]

March 30, 2009

Well, that didn’t take long. Indians reserve outfielder Dave Dellucci was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained left calf muscle. Trevor Crowe will take his place on the opening day roster. Crowe, a switch hitter, was the Indians No.1 draft pick in 2005.
