July 29, 2009

INDIANS 6, ANGELS 7 — The Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth to force Angels closer Brian Fuentes out of the game, but reliever Jason Bulger saved the day. Bulger got Indians catcher Victor Martinez to ground into a double play before getting Jhonny Peralta to ground out [...]

INDIANS 12, MARINERS 3 — Travis Hafner, Jhonny Peralta, Grady Sizemore and Ben Francisco all hit home runs, Peralta’s of the grand slam variety, and Cliff Lee pitched seven strong innings to finish the three-game sweep of the Mariners. The Indians are now on a four-game winning streak and have won five of their last six. [...]

Wedge optimistic about Francisco

July 12, 2009

DETROIT: Many Indians fans think its time for Matt LaPorta to leave Columbus in the rear view mirror and start patroling left field in the big leagues.
That would leave Ben Francisco on the outside looking in, which is something manager Eric Wedge is not prepared for. At least not yet.
“I still think that Ben is [...]

Now is no time to quit

July 10, 2009

DETROIT: Why not call it a season after the All-Star Game?
Forfeit the rest of the games and tell the guys, “Don’t fall in any holes over the winter; eat your granola, and see you in Goodyear next spring.”
Sounds like a plan for the Indians.
Of course, there’s a catch, maybe two: The commissioner wouldn’t allow it, [...]

Shapiro fights to maintain normalcy

July 6, 2009

Until this year, General Manager Mark Shapiro had never gone through a season in which the Indians’ performance fell so totally below expectations and the heat on his manager, Eric Wedge, was so intense.
These kinds of seasons take a toll on all of the decision makers associated with a club. But maybe it’s true that [...]

Hafner starts to pick up the pace

June 17, 2009

CLEVELAND: Wednesday was another scheduled night off for Travis Hafner, whose return to the Indians’ lineup, while sporadic, has been marked mostly by success.
Hafner says his surgically operated right shoulder is less subject to soreness and fatigue, and in his first 29 at-bats, he is hitting .310 with three home runs, eight RBI, and characteristically, [...]

Cabrera out two-four weeks

June 3, 2009

MINNEAPOLIS: The Indians’ body count continued to rise Wednesday with the news that Asdrubal Cabrera was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Rather than being struck down with a dislocated shoulder, as Cabrera thought, the diagnosis, made in Cleveland, is a sprain.
“An MRI and an exam by Dr. (Mark) Schickendantz confirmed that it’s an AC joint [...]

6-1-09 Morning RoundUp

When the Indians need a win they turn to… Carl Pavano?
The Indians are now 6-1 in his May starts after Sunday’s late-inning win over the New York Yankees. The veteran right hander lost three times in April in four tries, the Indians lost his other start as well.
There was also another strange sighting at The [...]

5-28-09 Morning RoundUp

May 28, 2009

If only Ben Francisco could hit against Andy Sonnanstine at least 27 times a game.
It gets ugly for the former Kent State Golden Flash and Wadsworth Grizzlie when Francisco steps into the batters box: Nine career at bats. Five home runs. Two doubles. One single. twelve RBI.
Wednesday Francisco blasted a three-run home run in [...]

5-5-09 Morning RoundUp

May 5, 2009

Yesterday I pulled up the Indians statistics for runners in scoring position with two outs and it wasn’t pretty. The Indians have the worst batting average during those situations in the entire league at .160. They had only driven in 26 runs.
Why do I still bring this up after a 9-7, 12-inning see-saw win [...]

Offense still wheezing

April 30, 2009

Despite scoring nine runs Tuesday and five on Wednesday, the Indians’ attack continues to struggle.
Want proof? In the final two games of the series against the Red Sox, the Tribe was 1-for-22 with runners in scoring position. Cleveland scored only three runs that were not the product of home runs or defensive blunders by Boston. [...]

04-29-09 Morning RoundUp

April 29, 2009

It was one of those games the Indians had no business winning, but they found a way with Boston shining the light.
The Red Sox committed three errors — some could argue four with that Jacoby Ellsbury sliding attempt in centerfield — including the final play of the game that allowed the Indians to snap the [...]

4-24-09 Morning RoundUp

April 24, 2009

Thursday’s game against the Royals was one the Indians had no business winning, but somehow, they still did.
They survived three errors and 16 batters with out a base runner before Grady Sizemore bailed out the team with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Indians went on to win 5-2, thus winning their [...]

Tribe’s Francisco plans basepaths heists

April 7, 2009

It was a simple expression of aspiration. Or maybe it was more: a statement of an achievable goal.
”I want to steal bases,” Ben Francisco said. ”I did it my whole career in the minors, but it got away from me.”
Maybe Francisco forgot he plays for the Indians, a team that seems to have a firm [...]

4-4-09 Morning Roundup

April 4, 2009

Fausto Carmona will begin this season the way he ended last year: Suspended.
The right-hander was suspended for five games at the end of last season for beating the crap out of Gary Sheffield.
(If I remember correctly, it appeared more as if he was giving Sheffield a noogie than actually beating the crap out of him, [...]

Pavano encouraged by latest outing

March 10, 2009

Carl Pavano made his third and longest start of the spring and pronounced himself on track in the Indians’ 8-4 loss to the Angels.
“I felt strong after the third inning,” he said. “”I’m continuing to pound the zone and trying to get ahead in the count. I think I threw like 50 pitches. That’s not [...]

February 17, 2009

Starting in left field…
No. 25…
Ryan Garko!?
Akron Beacon Journal reporter Marla Ridenour left this interesting little nugget hidden at the bottom of her story entitled, Wedge shows respect for history.
First baseman Ryan Garko and second baseman Josh Barfield got their first taste of playing the outfield today.
Wedge said Garko will be used only in left field, [...]

Reyes and other notes

January 9, 2009

Anthony Reyes made an immediate impact after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the second half of last season for the Indians. Now, he has earned a spot in the rotation. ¶
‘‘Certainly if he is healthy, Reyes is going to be in our rotation,’’ Gbc Mark Gec GM Mark Shapiro said.¶
Reyes sat out [...]
