No question that Hafner had a great, if brief run. That's not the issue. The problem is that they made an injury prone DH the highest paid player in Tribe history when they should've been thinking about other, much more valuable soon to be free agents. The Hafner contract is just the most glaring sign of incompetence. There are numerous others with this management team.

For three years, Hafner had an OPS over 1000. In those years, he was probably the best hitter in the American League. Even in 2007, when he had a disappointing season compared to 2004-2006, he had a 385 on base percentage and had more than 50 xbh. To say he had one good year is more than a little disingenuous. Going forward, he can be an important part of the a good offensive line-up next year. If he can manage to hit 280 and 25-30 homers, he could anchor the middle of the line-up that looks like: Brantley, Cabrera, Sizemore, Choo, Hafner, Laporta, Peralta, Marson, and Valbuena. If Brantley can produce and Hafner can get put up numbers similar to 2007, I like how this offense projects a lot.

Hafner has been the albatross that's killed the Tribe's chances of competing. He saddled us with that longterm bloated deal when he KNEW he wasn't 100%. Shoot, *I* knew he wasn't 100%, and how Shapiro didn't know it is a mystery. But yeah, we're stuck paying one useless DH about 1/5 of our team payroll. And for what? Numbers that Ben Francisco could've put up for us.

Can Hafner recapture the old glory days? You've gotta be kidding. Those fluke, likely-juice-driven seasons are far in the past. We're more likely to see 200 strikeouts in a season before we ever see him post 100 RBI or even 25 homeruns.

Travis, you and your agent should be ashamed of yourselves. You've single-handedly helped to destroy a franchise for the period of about a half-decade or more. This market could never afford to make such a costly mistake. And yet, you forced it. And Shapiro bit.

Seriously. What were they thinking when they decided to build the team around an injury prone DH? Yes, Hafner had a couple of great years. But was he juicing? The loss of timing was eerily reminiscent of Sosa when he tried to play after the drugs. To Hafner's credit he battled back from that and his latest injury, but folks, he was injury prone as a young player. That's why Texas was willing to deal him for next to nothing.
