Third baseman Mark DeRosa may have been the first Indians player dealt this season, but it is likely he won’t be the last.
Sports Illustrated writer Jon Heyman reports shortstop/third baseman Jhonny Peralta, closer Kerry Wood and starting pitcher Carl Pavano could all be shipped out before the trade deadline.
In the same column, Heyman delivers his midseason awards:
Maury Wills Award (Worst Manager): Eric Wedge, Indians. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Just got the vote of confidence, as GMÂ Mark Shapirodiplomatically blames himself more than Wedge.
…
Hawk Harrelson Award (AL Worst Executive): Mark Shapiro, Indians. Very bright guy, and two-time major league Executive of the Year. His Indians have gotten very unlucky. But let’s face it, very little has worked. The bullpen has been an abomination, and the rotation isn’t much better. The Kerry Wood contract, with two years at $20.5 million plus a third year if he closes 55 games this year and next, does not look good now.

Wow. And that’s what the national media now thinks.
As for the 3 players listed, they’re of little use to us NOW, and certainly aren’t a viable part of the future. Let’s get a player-to-be-named-later.
I would keep Wood. Pavano is great trade bait. At this point, I would trade Peralta for whatever he can net us. His salary jumps next year, while his play has been declining.
Wedge and Shapiro keep saying they accept responsiblity for what is happening
but all they do is talk about it…For pity sakes DO something instead of talking,
talking, talking and maybe they can find someone who can give run support
consistently to the pitching staff…i.e. Cliff Lee….So move those 3 guys and
get a fresh look…it certainly won’t be any worse of a situation….
