Hafner heads to DL

by Jonas Fortune on April 29, 2009 - 4:35 pm

The Indians just announced in a press release that designated hitter Travis Hafner is headed to the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder soreness.  Left-handed pitcher Rich Rundles was recalled from Columbus to take his place on the roster.

The pesky right shoulder is the same shoulder that Hafner has had problems with over the last two seasons. Hafner had an operation that shoulder in September.

In 17 games this year Hafner is hitting .270 (17-63) with four home runs and and eight RBI. He has struck out 18 times and walked eight times.

Rundles has pitched in seven games this season for the Triple A Columbus Clippers. He is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA. He has struck out seven batters in six innings and has allowed as many walks as hits, three.

Rundles pitched in eight games for the Tribe last season, working five innings and striking out six. He had a 1.80 ERA.

The addition of Rundles appears to be just for tonight, according to Anthony Castrovince.

Cleveland Indian’s manager Eric Wedge told Castrovince that Hafner has been battling soreness and fatigue in the shoulder and will see renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, who operated on the shoulder in September.

Dave Dellucci, who is on rehab assignment in Columbus, and phenom Matt LaPorta are both viable options to fill the void. The Indians could hold LaPorta back with his arbitration clock in mind though.

You counting him out after one setback isn’t really fair either, terje.

Overall, they didn’t really know what to expect with Hafner.

I vote for LaPorta myself. Let’s get this show rolling.
