4-6-09 Morning Roundup

by Jonas Fortune on April 6, 2009

The start of the season is finally here as the Indians are set to face the Texas Rangers at 2:05 today at the Ball Park at Arlington. More on that though in a later post.

Not too much information to “roundup” this morning. It appears as though the beat writers are recharging their batteries for a 162-game stretch here.

Sheldon Ocker did offer an intriguing piece on releiver Jensen Lewis today.

Lewis, who finished the season strong last year at the back of the bullpen, moves back into a setup role for new closer Kerry Wood.

Manager Eric Wedge is going to have his work cut out for him this season with all the versatility on the team, Paul Hoynes wrote.

Wedge, who usually tinkers with his lineup a lot anyways, has even more options with this team.

Hoynes also broke down this year’s salary figures. The Indians bumped the salary up to $80.52 million this season. Travis Hafner is the most expensive piece at $11.5 million this season.

Other news

The season kicked off last night when the Braves beat the reigning world champion Phillies 4-1 in Philadelphia. Phillies starter Brett Meyers made as if he was Clay Counsil last night as he gave up three home runs in the first three innings.

Brian McCann hit an absolute bomb. Jeff Francoeur found the left field seats and rookie Jordan Schafer, who has a game style comparable to Grady Sizemore, sent a ball to straight away center for his first major league hit.

New Braves ace Derek Lowe took care of the rest as he cruised through eight innings, allowing just two hits and getting 13 ground outs.

Anytime that piece of garbage wife-beater Brett Myers gets hammered, it’s a good day in my world. He’s the prime example of a spoiled, arrogant, foul-mouthed idiot. The tirade he delivered on a sportswriter should have gotten him suspended for about a month. Calling a reporter a “retard?” How exactly did Selig let him get away with that? Smacking his wife around? Geez, this is Joey Belle territory. At least we have the satisfaction that ol’ Brett was shipped back to the minors last year, and is off to another stunning 0-1 start. Here’s hoping he keeps it up.

On a Tribe note: Designated H-I-T-T-E-R Travis Hafner…”the most expensive piece” of what?

Hey Sheldon, when did Jensen Lewis become a ‘lefty’?
