A few roster moves

by Jonas Fortune on March 26, 2009 - 2:55 pm

The Indians re-assigned infielder Andy Cannizaro to minor league camp today and claimed right-handed pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

Ryu, 25, has been optioned directly to Triple A Columbus. Last year, as a member of the Rays organization, Ryu made five starts at triple A Durham.

He was 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA and had 19 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. He also allowed 26 hits and 12 earned runs.

He made one releif appearance for the Rays last year pitching 1.1 innings allowing no hits, no runs.

Ryu underwent season-ending arthroscopic elbow surgery in July before being claimed off waivers in January by San Diego.

For his career, Ryu has a minor league record of 42-34 with a 3.52 ERA in 137 games. he has struck out 585 batters in 672.1 innings.

To make room for Ryu on the 40-man roster the Indians placed right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook (rehab from right elbow surgery) on the 60-day disabled list.

There are now 34 players remaining in Major League camp.
